Briana Ashley Gonzalez, 6, is a first grade honor roll student at Dr. Manuel Barreiro Elementary school in Miami. Although Briana doesn’t reside in Palm Beach County, we still consider her a Palm Beach Superstar! Briana competed in her first beauty pageant on October 3rd, here in West Palm Beach (Miss Pink). Each contestant was asked to raise money for the 2010 Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk of Palm Beach to benefit the Ameri-can Cancer Society. Not only did Briana win the title of Little Miss Pink, but she was also awarded the most important title, Miss Pink Ambassador which was given to the girl who raised the most funds to benefit breast cancer, an illness which Brianna, at an early age un-derstands to be a major disease affecting many women today.

Brianna enjoys the same activities as other girls her age, such as swimming and dancing. Recently she has a new found hobby, modeling. She started taking modeling classes in September, 2010 at the prestigious and well known agency of Baron a Parre, called Pageants Universe. She is coached by Pageants Universe director Vanessa Gonzalez and quickly obtained the skills required to take the pageant world by storm. Not only did Brianna win the title of Little Miss Pink but she had the honor of winning the Miami Sunburst preliminary, thus qualifying her for the Sunburst State Competition in May 2011. Most recently Brianna won the title of Little Miss Citrus Miami (4-6 years), qualifying her for the National Competition in February 2011. Growing up in a family of doctors and nurses, she quickly developed an interest for medicine. She has big dreams of following her family’s footsteps.

At the young age of six, Brianna stays active in her community by donating to the International Rescue Committee and inspires her classmates to recycle at school.

BY CIERA NITKOWSKI

As our “Momtreprenuer” Kellie is an ideal choice as she exemplifies an ability to think outside the box for a common goal and that’s to help women in general. She believes that “your success is not optional” and whether it’s showing you how to make “Fortunes on Facebook” or “How to Profit from Being You,” she is there to show women how to get out of life the happiness and security that we all strive for in our lives.

Kellie is a national speaker for her Women’s Wellness Society and mentors people on their pathway to self. When it comes to action, that benefits accomplishment, then Kellie is a role model for people who aspire to excel and make the very most of their opportunities as mothers and entrepreneurs’.

She states that all women should control their own destiny and be accountable to themselves for their livelihood. This was one of many lessons she had taken away from a seven year bad relationship that changed her life for the better. Here are 9

Kellie Kuecha

points that she reads everyday that she would like to share with you.

1. I will DECLARE my successes in advance!

2. I will NOT be victimized by my circumstances

3. I will view every obstacle as an OPPORTUNITY

4. I vow to be TRANSPARENT, AUTHENTIC and OPEN

5. I will continuously INVEST in myself

6. I will RE-FRAME my story and RE-SHAPE my beliefs

7. I will SURROUND myself with like-minded people

8. I believe in GOD and will TRUST in his ability to guide me

9. I will walk by FAITH and not by sight

The place to start any transformation is to have a role model and Kellie can serve so many in their quest to improve their lives. In February she is launching Flow and Grow Rich as well as Kidsbiz. Did we not mention that Kellie is also a mother of 4? Some might think that in itself is a full time job.

Kellie also makes time to focus on the environment and charity work, so time management is certainly a forte of hers. Take the time to look at some of her websites and judge for yourself on how she might be able to mentor your growth.

16 PALM BEACH PARENTING

Once in awhile you get the opportunity to meet someone who really meets the standard of “greatness” in their field. I will let you in on my secret, I didn’t have to go very far to find it and neither will you. Dr. Dror Paley can be found right here in West Palm Beach.

Recently I had the opportunity to spend some time with Dr. Paley, a world renowned orthopedic surgeon whose practice has extended to patients in all 50 states and around the world, in 50 different countries. When I arrived, Dr. Paley was in surgery, as he often is so his Assistant Caroline Eaton and Tenants Healthcare’s PR Manager, Ryan Lieber met with me. I was surprised to find that Caroline has been with Dr. Paley for several years and relocated from Maryland with Dr. Paley. The Paley Institute requires a large team of professionals to be successful. This was the first thing Dr. Paley made clear to me was he couldn’t do what he does without a great team. I wasn’t surprised by his glowing adulation of Caroline but it did surprise me that she started as was a patient of Dr. Paley.

It’s important that you understand that for a child born with a congenital birth defect in the United States, the standard treatment is amputation. Yes, right here in the greatest country on earth, if your child is born with a short femur and you would like them to look normal, the treatment is cut off the foot and fit them with prosthesis.

MIRACLE ON

STREET45TH

The Miracle of Modern Medicine

Now as a father of four, if one of my children had a deformity and I was aware of a procedure that could lengthen their leg as long as needed or they could live with a amputation, well, you know what the decision would be. I would find any way I could to get to Dr. Paley and that’s what parents do throughout the world.

Dr. Paley has worked on so many children and in several cases went to them to perform surgery.Obviously, this is not very practical but less than a year ago he was in Haiti and within 1 hour of arriving was performing surgery. He does plan to return to Haiti to continue to help those suffering there. He told me that many of his patients are from families with very limited means and from third world countries, yet they find their way to South Florida. As parents, I believe we can certainly understand how this happens.

Dr. Paley has been attributed with over 100 new procedures in the Orthopedic field of medicine and the foremost expert on limb lengthening procedures. I think we have all encountered children in our lives with special shoes as a result of a birth deformity. I was amazed to find that 1 out of 1,000 children born are born with club feet. This puts many children in South Florida with this birth defect and they don’t know about the Paley Institute. In fact, I have asked around and found the first place most parents think to take their children if faced with this dilemma is Miami.

BY NICK NITKOWSKI

Now if you your child is born with an orthopedic deformity, there is only one place to go, The Paley Institute at St. Mary’s Hospital.

Let’s take a look as to why. Dr. Paley has performed more than 10,000 limb reconstruction surgeries over the last 22 years. I tend to think if you do anything that many times you’re a master. I mean we have all heard Thomas Edison found 999 ways that didn’t work before he invented the light bulb. Dr. Paley has found hundreds of ways to make it work. He has been awarded and honored in his field of medicine and has a written a book, Principles of Deformity Correction which is considered one of the definitive books on the subject.

Example: Now if your child was born with congenital femoral deficiency and requires the superhip procedure and you go to an orthopedic surgeon anywhere else, they might not have seen a patient with the problem or maybe one a year. My second opinion: The Paley Institute for any orthopedic procedure.

St. Mary’s has provided him with all the support he needed to continue his work “I need a lot ofoperating time, a lot of clinic space and a lot of physical therapy space” and The Paley Institute has it all including an outpatient facility that meets his requirements.

When I was visiting the Paley institute I saw patients from around the world. This week in particular, there were patients from France, Ecuador, and Honduras to name a few. Recently Physicians from Jordan and Korea visited to study under Dr. Paley which is also a common occurrence at The Paley Institute.

In June, Dr. Paley will be celebrating two years in Florida and hopes to create the same practice he had created after 22 years of practice in Maryland.

a baby story...

A NEW MOM DISHES ON PREGNANCY, CHILDBIRTH AND LIFE WITH A NEW BABY IN THE HOUSE.

PHOTO BY ROBYN BEAULIEU WITH LAPAIX PHOTOGRAPHY

How did you find out you were pregnant? I took 1 pregnancy test, then 1 more, just to be sure. I was shocked!

How did you tell your husband? He was home when I took the test, so I just showed him the test.

How did he react? He was very calm, but very happy.

What is the baby’s full name? How did you settle on the name? Sophia Elle Larsen. I have always loved the name Sophia. Before my husband and I were even married, I told him that we were going to have a little girl named Sophia. Thankfully, he eventually agreed. Elle, the middle name came from my grandmother’s name, Eleanor. I just altered it a bit to make it modern.

What did you do to prepare for the new baby? I read a lot, spoke with friends and family who had babies, shopped for everything and prepared her nursery.

Sophia ElleWhat was the worst part of being pregnant? Being tired all the time.

What was the best part? Knowing that our beautiful baby girl was growing inside me and one day soon she would be in our lives forever. I loved feeling her squirm around.

Was childbirth what you thought it would be like? It was better than I thought it would be. After watching all those gruesome childbirth videos I was terrified! What was your first thought when you saw the baby? I was so thankful she was finally in my arms.

How did Dad react? He kept telling me, “She’s beautiful!”

What’s your favorite thing about being a mom? Knowing my job as Sophia’s mom is the most

important and rewarding job in the world. I feel the need she has of me and it is the best feeling in the world.

Do you miss anything about life before the baby? Life before Sophia is a blur. I am so in love with her that I can not imagine life without her. I don’t think I could go one day without seeing her smile, it melts my heart.

Do you plan to have another baby any time soon? No. What advice do you have for new moms? Ask for help when you need it. Try to take time each day for yourself. Do not expect things to go exactly as you plan in your mind.

Looking good in the New Year

And All Year! In January of each year I see the gym I work out in increase greatly in people concerned about their weight or at least that is what I think they are there for, I am. Now I know it is right after the Thanksgiving and Christmas months and most of them have put on a few pounds or they have made a New Years Resolution to lose the weight, keep it off and go down a few sizes in their clothes. Regardless of why we go to the gym or watch what we eat it is good physically to do so that we will have good health. God intended for us to walk healthy and to take care of ourselves. In this article I want to look at this, “looking and being healthy” on a different angle.

I have taken it upon myself with the help of our Lord, lots of help, to keep myself in good physical shape. About five years ago my doctor told me that my bad cholesterol was too high and that he was going to put me on medication to bring it to where it should be. He told me that I could help myself by eating right and exercising several times a week. He also told me that if I did not take the medication and keep myself in good physical shape it would cause me to be in danger of a stroke or heart attack. All this is important and certainly I want to live without great pain and also look good, but there are two reasons I take care of myself and both are my priorities, first to honor my Lord who tells me to take care of myself, 1 Corinthians 6:19 – Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?” The next or I should say, second priority, is my wife. In 1 Corinthians 7:4 the Word of God says, “The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does; and likewise also the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does.

Each verse in the Bible has a meaning, but each verse in the Bible has more than one application. I am well aware that 1 Corinthians 7 has much to say about marriage and that this particular verse, verse 4 connotes that my body belongs to my wife and hers belongs to me and because of this we both have certain requirements of the other. I, nor her, are to give ourselves to another, physically, emotionally, or anyway that is inappropriate to our relationship to God or to each other as husband

and wife, but it means more. We have been married for 39 years and want to enjoy life and each other for as many years as our Lord will allow us. One day he will take us home to live with Him in heaven, but until then He has much for us to do and part of that is loving each other in every way we can. That means that he wants us to look good and feel good for each other.

What does that mean? First of all, we are to take good care of our health by getting annual check-ups. We are to listen to our doctors when he or she tells us to take the medications they prescribe. We are to eat a good diet which means that we watch what we eat, not that we don’t enjoy the holiday meals or special celebrations, but even in those we can be careful. We are to exercise to keep our muscle tone and strength where it should be as well as develop our heart and lung capacity at a healthy level. In exercising please see your doctor to ensure that you know your limits. We are to get the right amount of rest, sleep and avoidance of stress. Too many of us come home wound up and don’t unwind. I believe that stress is the number one killer. Figure out ways to de-stress, hobbies, spending time together, reading, watching

shows on TV that don’t increase stress, praying, taking walks, whatever relieves your stress. My wife and I love to sit out on our porch swing and talk and sometimes just quietly swing and enjoy God’s beauty.

These verses also mean that you are to look good for each other. Obviously, exercising and eating correctly will cause you to look better, but looking better could mean other ways also. How you physically look. Look good for your spouse. Give your spouse reason to desire you in how you look and especially how you act. Take pride in your appearance. You don’t have to look like a million bucks all the time, but use this as a guide, “I want my spouse to look at me even in my “grubby clothes” and say WOW I am married to her or to him.

Our spouse, according to God’s Word, is our best friend. Look good for your spouse. The greatest compliment you should receive from someone else when they see you is that you both look good together, and that is at any age. I pray that you and your spouse will long for each other much like you did when you were dating yet right now it is even greater in the commitment you have in the mature love of marriage.

You can’t pick up a parenting magazine or watch TV without hearing about the problem of childhood obesity. The numbers are staggering – almost 1 in 3 children in the United States is obese or overweight.

You’ve also likely read about the dangers of too much fat, too little calcium, too much sodium and too little vitamin D. What’s a parent to do?

In this article we will briefly review some of the important aspects of feeding and nutrition in each age group. Whether you have a toddler or a teen, the specific nutritional choices you and your child make are important. Good nutrition is essential to good health and the American Academy of Pediatrics encourages parents to think of nutritional decisions as health decisions.

INFANTS Breast milk or iron-fortified infant formula should be the sole nutritional source for the first four-to-six months and the major source of nutrition for the first 12 months.

After about four-to-six months most babies are able to start solid foods like iron-fortified infant cereal, strained fruits and vegetables, and pureed meats. These provide additional sources of iron and zinc for the developing infant. Most infants are able to sleep through the night by four-to-six months and continued night time feedings are not only unnecessary, but may also provide too many calories.

TODDLERS After the first year of life, children should make the transition from a bottle to a cup and can eat most anything as long as it is not in a form they could choke on. Change formula and breast milk to whole milk. In children younger than two years, fat and cholesterol should not generally be restricted because fat is necessary for their brain and nerve development.

Growth rate, and therefore appetite, decreases after the first year. Toddlers may eat variable amounts at any meal and will often play with

Too much? Too Little? Just right?BY WILLIAM R. BARRON, JR., M.D.

their food as part of their normal exploratory development. Beginning at about two years of age, toddlers often become resistant to trying new foods. It may be necessary to offer new foods several times before acceptance.

PRESCHOOL Preschoolers can be especially picky about what they eat. They tend to want to stick to bland, beige, starchy foods like chicken nuggets, fries, and macaroni. This is really the time to encourage fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and beans. These foods provide various nutrients including fiber which has many benefits including helping prevent constipation.

Milk and calcium are still important for development of strong bones and teeth. For those unable or unwilling to drink milk, try calcium-fortified orange juice, cereals, and oatmeal, as well as, lactose-free and soy milk.

SCHOOL AGE School age children can understand basic nutritional concepts. They can and should be encouraged to help with meal planning, food preparation and meal time chores.

School age children are also aware of their bodies (weight and shape.) Their food attitudes and choices are therefore often influenced by friends and the media. Parents need to balance these potentially negative influences by positive influences at home like making healthy choices themselves during family meals and giving positive reinforcement when the child make healthy choices.

Specific nutritional problems at this age may involve foods high in sugars, fat, and salt. Monitoring the child’s food selections at school is important to make sure these nutrients, which the body does need, are eaten in moderation as too much can lead to unneeded weight gain and other health problems.

TEENAGERSAs puberty begins, teens need more calories to

sustain their increased growth rate and changes in body composition. Like calories, calcium requirements are higher. Calcium is more important than ever during these years because the majority of bone mass is built during this time. Fewer than 10 percent of girls and just 25 percent of boys ages 9 to 13 are at or above the adequate intake of calcium. Encouraging teens

to have milk, milk products, or calcium-rich alternatives is important for growth now and bone health in the future.

Your child’s gender may also play a role in nutritional needs. For example, teen girls need more iron to replace what is lost during menstruation, and boys tend to need more protein to build muscle mass.

Unfortunately, one of the first ways teens assert independence is by making their own eating choices. One of the many benefits to having family meals together is to monitor these choices and reinforce good habits.

Although getting your child to eat healthy – regardless of his or her age – requires much effort, it is well worth it as you are giving your child the best possible opportunity to have a healthy childhood which will lead to a healthy adulthood.

Lastly, for those of you who would like know more specific nutritional requirements for your child, you may want to visit www.MyPyramid.gov, an interactive website that provides guidance based upon age, sex, and activity level.
