R.B. Kitaj: Obsessions Analyst for Our time23 February – 16 June 2013

R.B. Kitaj (1932–2007) was one of the most significant painters of the post-war period. Together with his friends Francis Bacon, Frank Auerbach and Lucian Freud, he pioneered a new, figurative art which defied the trend in abstraction and conceptualism.

Drawn from the major Berlin retrospective R.B. Kitaj: Obsessions, the exhibition at Pallant House Gallery - subtitled Analyst for our Time - will feature over 70 major paintings, sketches and prints, including key international loans, presenting an overview of Kitaj's extensive oeuvre from the 1960s to his death in 2007.

It will include Kitaj's remarkable portraits of personal friends such as his depiction of David Hockney, 'The Neo-Cubist', as well as his works addressing issues of European politics, philosophy and literature such as 'The Murder of Rosa Luxemburg'. Kitaj's fascination with the relationship between the body, sexuality and history is also represented in a series of powerful paintings of bathers including 'Self-Portrait as a Woman' and 'The Sensualist'.

R.B. Kitaj: Obsessions is an exhibition at Pallant House Gallery and the Jewish Museum London in co-operation with the Jewish Museum Berlin. Supported by Sotheby's, Marlborough Fine Art, GAM, and The R.B. Kitaj Supporter's Circle

Barbara Hepworth: The Hospital Drawings16 February – 2 June 2013

In the late 1940s Barbara Hepworth (1903–1975) embarked on a series of studies of the operating theatre at the invitation of her friend, the surgeon Norman Capener. The remarkable drawings offer a unique insight into a little-known aspect of the artist - her skill as a draughtsperson - revealing how drawing was an important means of exploring forms that influenced her practice as a sculptor.

Featuring over 30 works, including Hepworth's sketchbook, the exhibition - which comes to Pallant House Gallery from The Hepworth Wakefield - is the most significant presentation of this extraordinary series to date, comprising key loans from national, public and private collections.

Aptly, the exhibition at Pallant House Gallery coincides with the 65th anniversary year of the launch of Britain's pioneering National Health Service in 1948. A ground-breaking change within Post-War Britain society, the NHS was embraced by artists like Hepworth, who supported its broad left ideals.

Barbara Hepworth: Hospital Drawings is a Mascalls Gallery exhibition curated by Nathaniel Hepburn.

Supported by the New Art Centre, Toovey's Antique and Fine Art Auctioneers and Valuers, and The Hepworth Supporter's Circle
