Maybe you have wondered why you were a different size shoe you’re your friends, your bother, or your sister. Look around your classroom and notice that your peers are all different in shapes and sizes. Some students might be quite tall while others may be somewhat short. One student will have hair that grows very fast while another rarely needs to be cut. These things are all determined based on your body’s physical makeup. They are the things that make you unique. Your body is made of cells and something called DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid). DNA is what makes your body and hair a certain color. It even helps your body to determine how intelligent you become. Before a person is born there is a map of how they are going to turn out that is already inside of them. This map is stored in their body and comes in the form of DNA. The DNA that you receive from your mother and father contributes to who you become as a person. Nearly everything about you is determined based on the structure of your DNA. There is information on every cell that you have which explains something about your physical makeup. In fact, there are billions of DNA strands in a single person.

GENETICS Professor KnickerbockerThis class will incorporate various genetic curriculum ideas found on the internet and instructor curriculum books. Students will explore plant and insect genetic traits. Students will use punnett squares to determine the percentage of genetic traits displayed in offspring. Students will learn about DNA structure and build models of DNA. Students will extract DNA from their body cells and make a DNA necklace that can be worn at home. The class will research and discuss various genetic diseases.

GROUP GAMES with Coach Ashley HallJoin this elective and enjoy group games with your friends! Games have always been an important part of any culture because they are interactive, social, provide good memories, and can be meaningful and innovative. You won’t want to miss the fun of playing games like SPUD or BANANA PASS! This elective is limited to 12 students.Summary: SPUD is an action game that incorporates some elements of dodge ball. The ball is tossed up high, someone catches it, yells “SPUD!”, take three big steps, and tries to get someone out!

Ages: All. Recommended # of people: At least 8 players. Messiness factor: Lots of running and throwing. Materials required: A soft ball that does not hurt when thrown. Recommended setting: Outdoors.

The Spud Game

Spud is a simple, fast-paced action game that contains running, dodging, and throwing. It is a popular camp or kids game, but youth group students, college students and adults will probably enjoy playing this game too. Lots of variations exist for this game — be creative!

How to Play Spud

To set up the Spud Game, have each player count off and remember their number. An optional variation is to have more than one person per number. After everyone is assigned a number, have each player group together in a bunch. One person starts with the ball in the center of the bunch.

20

Page 21: Paleontology - 198.12.153.245198.12.153.245/~cu/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/CU-Elective-Desc…  · Web viewOrganize your favorite websites, use it to keep track of your collections,

At the beginning of each round, the person with the ball (who is in the center of the bunch) throws the ball upwards to the sky while yelling a number. Everyone disperses and runs in all different directions away from the bunch except for the person(s) whose number was called. The person whose number was called catches the ball and then yells “Spud!” When he or she yells this, everyone must freeze. The person with the ball then is allowed to take three giant steps toward any player. He or she throws the ball and tries to hit someone. To dodge, players are allowed to move all parts of their body except they may not move their feet at all. If a player is hit the first time, he or she earns the letter “S”, eventually spelling the word S-P-U-D. The person who was hit becomes the new thrower; otherwise, the thrower who missed earns a letter. The next round begins and play continues. Whoever spells the letter S-P-U-D is out of the game; alternatively, if you do not wish to eliminate players, you can set a time limit and whoever has the least amount of letters when time expires is the winner.

The Banana Pass Game

The banana pass is an outdoor action game that is essentially a messy relay race. The “baton” is a banana — except the catch is that you can only use your feet to pass it! Eww..

How to Play

Players lie down on the grass, head to toe in a straight line with each person’s toes about 2 feet away from the next teammate’s head. When the game begins, the first people in line grab hold of the banana with their feet and pass it over their heads to the next person’s feet. The next person receives the banana with his or her feet and passes again until the entire team is done. When the banana has been passed to the last person, this person must peel the banana and eat it (ewww!). After eating it, the person then must run back to the starting line, finishing the race for the team.

PLAYGROUNDS AND OUTDOOR PLAY EQUIPMENT SAFETY

Playgrounds and outdoor play equipment provide fun, fresh air, and exercise. But they also can pose some safety hazards.

Teaching Kids About Playground Safety

Safe playground equipment and adult supervision are extremely important, but it's only half of the equation: Kids must know how to be safe and act responsibly at the playground.

Here are some general rules to teach your kids:

Never push or roughhouse while on jungle gyms, slides, seesaws, swings, and other equipment.

Use equipment properly — slide feet first, don't climb outside guardrails, no standing on swings, etc.

If you jump off equipment, always check to make sure no other kids are in the way. When you jump, land on both feet with knees slightly bent.

Leave bikes, backpacks, and bags away from the equipment and the area where you're playing so that no one trips over them.

Playground equipment should never be used if it is wet because moisture causes the surface to be slippery.

33

Page 34: Paleontology - 198.12.153.245198.12.153.245/~cu/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/CU-Elective-Desc…  · Web viewOrganize your favorite websites, use it to keep track of your collections,

During the summertime, playground equipment can become uncomfortably or even dangerously hot, especially metal slides. So use good judgment — if the equipment feels hot to the touch, it's probably not safe or fun to play on.

Don't wear clothes with drawstrings or other strings at the playground. Drawstrings, purses, and necklaces could get caught on equipment and accidentally strangle a child.

Wear sunscreen when playing outside even on cloudy days so that you don't get sunburned.
