WHATSON @ THE PALACE THEATRE

The Friends of the Palace TheatreThe Friends of the Palace Theatre were formed in 2002 to aid and assist the ailing and deteriorating Palace Theatre in Paignton. Restricted disability access, flat floor auditorium, poor visibility lines, cramped bar - look at the Palace Theatre today! Sympathetically renovated to include full disability access, raked seating which gives a full view of the stage from any seat in the house, enlarged comfortable bar and backstage facilities brought up to standard for a modern 21st century theatre. This lovely old building has been brought back to life as a community asset for all to enjoy

The Friends is now a well organised club of supporters who raise funds to improve the facilities, and to maintain the Palace Theatre as a technically advanced and attractive venue for amateur and professional productions alike. Having raised over £100,000 towards the initial refurbishment, they continue to contribute to additional improvements. But there is still more to do.

The Friends are about to embark on a second exciting phase of the refurbishment project. They have submitted plans to Torbay Council to revamp the Arena area. The plans include a new entrance and wheelchair friendly lobby, a new toilet block and a welcoming access to the refurbished main hall.

The Palace Theatre is, in a very real sense, a community resource we must all treasure

There is much important work to be done regarding this second phase, but the Friends are not just about raising money. They are a lively social group who support and promote all the performing arts and encourage the people of Torbay to get involved.

We are keen to increase our membership, to widen our influence, and to encourage as many residents of Torbay as possible to take an active interest in this, their community theatre. Membership entitles you to discount tickets on some productions, a regular newsletter keeping you informed of forthcoming shows, and the various social events. There are regular coffee mornings, trips, lunches, and fund raising activities and social occasions to enjoy.

For more information pick up a Friends of the Palace Theatre brochure from the foyer or contact Marion Smith at [email protected]

PLEASE JOIN US AND GET INVOLVED TODAY!

THE SUNSHINE BOYS

An ex-vaudeville team, Al Lewis and Willie Clark, in spite of playing together for 43 years, have a natural antipathy to one another. CBS-TV wants to make a history of comedy series which will of course include their act. Willie has been doing TV commercials and Al has been happily retired, but they get back together for the series, only for Al to start picking on Willie again.

Dance Festival

› 10th-19th April

OriginsThe competitive Festival movement was already well established when war broke out in 1939. In 1940 a large number of evacuees were housed in Paignton, who attended school for half days only. On the initiative of the Youth Service, and backed by businessmen and local residents, a number of activities were arranged in order to give children something useful to occupy their spare time. As a result, the first Festival was held in 1941 and Bill Coysh, with his musical background and Rotary and business contacts, was the ideal person to successfully organise this new project.

In the first year just five classes were offered, but by the early fifties, the Paignton and South West of England Festival (as it was then known) was

the largest Festival in the south-west, if not in the country. Today we offer a wide range of classes in a variety of disciplines; from lieder to barbershop choirs; from piano recitals and jazz quartets to school orchestras and pop groups; from dramatic scenes from Shakespeare and poetry recitations to television newsreading; from classical ballet to tap dance via Highland Fling.

ProcessSo what happens at a Festival? A competitor will enter a class appropriate to his or her age – ten year old piano solo, for instance, or adult singing, or poetry reading for 12 year olds, or, especially popular with the audience this one – the baby ballet class. The performance will be judged. A mark will be

given, a winner chosen, and, usually, a cup awarded. But far more importantly, each performer will be given a written criticism by a highly trained and skilled, professional, adjudicator. The adjudicator will evaluate the performance, suggest how it might be improved and offer further encouragement

AdvantagesOur competitors are overwhelmingly, though not exclusively, children and young people. The advantages they gain are enormous:

• an opportunity for an amateur to perform in front of a professional, and to learn and improve from that process;

• an opportunity to pace themselves against others of similar abilities;

• an opportunity to increase their repertoire by watching their peers;

• an opportunity, especially for younger children, to grow in confidence by performing on a public platform; and

• an opportunity to use amateur performance as a springboard into the professional arts, whether as an artist or a teacher;

The majority of performers, of course, will not go on to a professional career; they will become the educated audiences of the future, supporting our opera houses, theatres and concert halls throughout the country.

Our Festival has a high profile within this wider festival movement; and is active both at national level, and within the South West Regional Forum of the Federation.

The Curtain Falls

A Play About The Demise Of Variety, Love And Friendship.

Its the hottest summer on record but the heat from the dressing room is equally as uncomfortable as the heat outside. Egos and personalities collide in this story of backstage rivalry in the biggest summer show of 1976.

South West based Comedians Dean Winters and Steve Laister explore a story of failed friendship, forgotten love and furious rivalry taking their audience backstage and back in time to 1976 when variety was King.

Both writers have experience in live variety theatre and life backstage, as between them they have over 50 years experience treading the boards.

The Curtain Falls is their first project as serious writers and the response has been overwhelming. With a small tour set up for September 2014 and a Nationwide Tour planned for March 2014

This simple tale of what could have been and what still might be, will evoke laughter, tears and will leave its audience with a sense of triumph over adversity.

A Black Comedy written by Dean Winters and Steve Laister

Starring Dean Winters, Steve Laister, Dave Short, and Jenny Luard

This play includes language and content that some will find offensive. Over 16s only.

QUARTET

Written by Ronald Harwood

Cecily, Reggie and Wilfred are in a home for retired opera singers. Each year on 10th October, there is a concert to celebrate Verdi’s birthday. Jean, who used to be married to Reggie, arrives at the home and disrupts their equilibrium. She still acts like a diva and refuse to sing. But the show must go on ...

By turns funny and poignant, Quartet premiered in September 1999 at the Albery Theatre London. More recently a very successful film of Quartet has been made starring Maggie Smith.

Classic Clapton Performed by After Midnight

AFTER MIDNIGHT are the World’s No1 Eric Clapton Tribute Band featuring front-man Mike Hall.

The band was formed in 1985 in Newcastle upon Tyne long before the term “tribute band” was invented, and named themselves ‘’After Midnight’’ after Eric Clapton’s first solo hit. Their ability to re-create Clapton’s electrifying stage performances really caught the audience’s imagination. In guitar/vocalist Mike Hall, the band possesses a front man who not only looks like Eric, he sings and plays guitar like him too!

In 1999, Mike won a national look-alike competition held at Madam Tussauds, London. Mike has met Slowhand twice, and even received a message of encouragement from the guitar maestro (written on a Concorde menu).

Playing a set of nearly two hours of Classic Clapton - This is a must for all “Slowhand” fans

Season’s Greetings

A comedy by Alan Ayckbourn

Half a dozen of relatives and friends are celebrating Christmas with Neville and Belinda. Petty, and not so petty, squabbles break out. Christmas presents are riffled, mechanical toys are set off. Hilarious highlights include a chaotically incompetent puppet show and a midnight love scene that goes wrong.

WHATSON @ THE PALACE THEATRE

Since its foundation in 1196, Torre Abbey has witnessed, survived and even played a role in some epic moments of history. It is one of the best buildings in the country to tell the story of 800 years of Catholicism between 1196 and 1930.

A clever mix of authentic artefacts with hi-tech interpretation. From talking portraits and statues to interactive displays and one of the largest fine art collections in the South West, there really is something for everyone. Follow the garden trails or pick up a family guide or Experts’ Choice to discover many hidden mysteries.

Torre Abbey comprises two Grade I listed buildings, four Grade II listed buildings, an historic garden and palm house, and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument of national importance.

It has been a centre of religious and artistic expression and hospitality for over 800 years. The house has a floor area of nearly 600 square metres, divided into 122 rooms, on twenty levels with 265 individual steps.

With its fine gatehouse, guest hall, tower and remarkable undercrofts, the Abbey is the best preserved example of a medieval monastery in Devon and Cornwall. It also has one of the five most complete early medieval tithe barns in England.

Torre Abbey was constructed in 1196 as a monastery for Premonstratensian canons and grew to be their richest monastery in England. After the dissolution of the monastery in 1539, the church was demolished and the west and south ranges were adapted for use as a country house.

From 1662 to 1930, Torre Abbey was home to the Cary family. A quiet family of country landowners, the Cary family were Catholics and, at a time when Catholicism had to be kept a secret, they stowed away a priest in an attic chapel. They built the present chapel, which dates from the late 18th century, when Catholic worship was legalised.

Although the Cary family had previously lived here in style, from 1840 they fell on hard times and could no longer keep the Abbey in good repair. In 1930 the family sold the property to the local Council, who turned it into an art gallery with a hospitality suite for the mayor in the south-east wing.

The Spanish Barn, adjacent to the house, is so named because it housed 397 prisoners from the Spanish Armada. The Barn is currently used for functions, such as weddings, and exhibitions.

Torre Abbey Historic House is an accredited museum owned by Torbay Council with one of the largest art collection in the South West. This includes a large art collection which is rich in 19th century paintings and sculptures.

Browse the shop stocked with a range of souvenirs, gifts and books or sit down and enjoy a selection of drinks, snacks and light meals in the tearooms. The house, Spanish Barn and Palm House are licensed for

civil weddings, partnership ceremonies and christenings. Torre Abbey can also cater for functions, corporate hospitality or training events.
