Vacuum Tube Lifters - How the system works

1. The Vacuum Pump generates an air flow through the Tube Lifting System i.e. the vacuum transfer hose, main tube lifter, control head and suction pad/tooling/end effector.

2. This produces ‘suction grip’ at the pad/tooling/end effector

3. A ’vacuum control head’, mounted on the control housing is used to control the flow of air into the Tube Lifting System.

4. A safety value is built into the upper can/housing fitted at the top of the lifting tube assembly. This acts as a simple ‘non-return valve’

5. A design feature of Tube Lifting Systems is the ‘ratio’ between the total suction grip/pad area and the area of a cross section of the lifting tube.

The ‘safety ratio’ Palamatic uses are generally designed at: -

2.5:1 - top lifting of product 3:1 - side lifting when gripping on two sides of the payload/product 4:1 - side lifting when gripping on one side of the payload/product

In the event of a main power failure, the safety design ratio in conjunction with the simple non-return valve combine to ensure that vacuum in the system decays at a slow rate so that the suction grip of the payload/product is maintained whilst the lifting tube lowers slowly (slowest on non-porous surfaces) to the ground.

You are under more pressure than you think!

In fact everything on planet Earth is resisting a force of 1 atmosphere (101.3Kpa.) at sea level. This means that a force of 101.3KN is acting on an area of 1 square metre. This constant energy force provided by nature is used by vacuum lifting de-vices.

Vacuum lifting utilises specially designed ‘Vacuum or suction Pads' to grip the load. The vacuum pads can be used singly or in multiples, to suit the lifting operation. The vacuum pads can be built into special lifting frames called 'Vacuum Beams' and sus-pended from overhead lifting gear, hoists, fork lift trucks or other devices such as automatic vacuum transfer machines.

Another type of vacuum lifting device - the Vacuum Tube Lifter - uses vacuum to LIFT and GRIP the article or load, eliminating the need for a conventional hoist. This equipment was specially designed for manual handling.

A specially designed vacuum pump creates negative pres-sure at position ‘1’ - this pump produces a high air flowwhich enables grip and lift using a single medium, vacuum

Air travels in the direction of the arrows and exhausts at position ‘2’

When a rubber seal ‘A’ comes in to contact with a product surface ‘B’ a vacuum suction grip is created

By operating control handle ‘C’, an operator can control the flow of air enabling the load to be lifted or lowered

Squeezing the lever closes a vent and creates a lifting force

De-pressing the lever vents air from the tube and effects a lowering motion. As vacuum leaves the system, the product lowers to its required position (deemed by the handling process)

Completely de-pressing the lever to its lowest point ex-hausts all air from the tube and allows the product load to be released

All hoses and tubes are sealed or taped to prevent loss of vacuum throughout the system

A Palamatic Vacuum Tube Lifter (Pal-U-Lift™) uses a single power medium – vacuum, to grip and lift heavy or awkward loads. An electrical vacuum pump (or vacuum ejector pump) creates a vacuum level when a suction pad or gripping de-vice is placed on an object load. The resulting low pressure makes the tube contract vertically and the object load is lifted. The operator controls the vacuum flow using a simple, finger touch operating valve, making the work physically easier and safer. Increasing the vacuum draws air out of the tube and the load is lifted. Reducing the vacuum allows air to enter the tube and the load is lowered. It really is that simple!

Safety of the lifting system is always our priority. The combination of the lifting and gripping functions requires no special interlocks or devices. A quick acting non-return valve and a suction force vs lifting force safety factor of 2.5 times, prevent the load from being inadvertently dropped – even in the event of a mains power failure.

Vacuum tube lifters are the perfect suspended-load handling aid for applications where the load is positioned below the lifting as-sembly’s centre of gravity. Vacuum tube lifters are not suitable for off-set or cantilevered load handling processes e.g. loading shelv-ing/racking - please see our Manipulator and/or PillarLift™ range.

The above image shows how we generally interpret the ‘lifting stroke’ or maximum vertical movement required for the vacuum lifter. The calculation of A - B = stroke. Palamatic standard tube strokes are 1700mm (67”) and 2400mm (94.5”), but these can be cut and re-fitted to suit each application as required.

Using a vacuum gauge, test vacuum levels at control head (using screw thread access on PL control housings—or by blanking off vacuum suction foot with gauge fitted to a flat plate).

Reading here should be between 10” and 14”Hg

Using a vacuum gauge, test vacuum levels in flexible hose after filter (i.e. on vacuum tube lifter side of filter) using vacuum gauge fitted to blanking plate or rigid pipe.


Test vacuum levels in the transfer hose line (using vacuum gauge fitted to blanking plate or rigid pipe).

Adjustment of the vacuum relief valve (VRV) should be made to reach the following levels. Please refer to operating manual for vacuum relief valve setting procedure.


Test vacuum levels at vacuum pump inlet (using vacuum gauge fitted to blanking plate).

Reading here should be approx. 18”Hg

If vacuum levels in the system differ to those detailed above there is a high likely-hood of a leak or blockage somewhere in the system. Please refer to operating manual for fault finding and maintenance procedures.

Explanation

The following pages show parts, references and prices for products within our new NXG™ range. NXG™ is being introduced to re-place both ML and PL ranges for light weigh operations as well as general operating processes such as sack lifting and box lifting.HCL

The main operation will be lever controlled, although we now have a new design, which has been referred to as ‘Tiller’ operated (see images below). This is a premium rate design on which operators can use thumb or hand held control to rotate a polymer block toactivate the lift and lower operations.

For the lever operated controls we also have a side mounted handle and an oval handle design. The oval handle option would gener-ally be seen on sack/bag lifters.

The NXG™ design is now much more modular, allowing rigid and flexible extensions to be added or removed easily as applications demand. The Tiller image below includes a 5.9” extension as part of the standard design.

• All NXG™ control housings will be stainless steel 304 as standard. • The rigid extension handles will be stainless steel 304 as standard. • The flexible extension handles will be carbon steel with a zinc passivate finish as standard. • The NXG™ control can is now smaller and lighter than the PL & HCL range. • The operating lever now only features a single bar. This is perfect for all operator types including gloved hands. • NXG™ range suction pads can be fitted to PL/HCL control housings using a simple adaptor plate (the bolt template is different

between NXG and PL/HCL). • We expect the HCL design to remain an available option for specific applications. • At this stage we would recommend sticking to the ancillary items relevant to each range.

NXG Ancillary Components NXG-COAR

Palamatic’s Vacuum Lifter is designed with the simplest of controls. One control valve is used to perform the grip, raise, lower and release operations. To assist with the release of the product, a (manually) Cable Operated Assisted Releasedevice (similar to a bicycle brake lever type handle) is mounted on the left-hand side of the vacuum control valve when viewed from the operator’s position.

To release the load gently press the control valve lever down to lower the object to its destination.

The control valve lever can now be further depressed whilst at the same time squeezing the brake-type lever (Assisted Release device) which will release the load from the suction foot.

As the suction foot raises clear of the load the brake-type lever can be re-leased. For safety, the assisted release feature will not operate until the load is landed.

The UJ fits between the lift tube assembly and the control assembly and provides approx. 35o of flexibility.
