    New PAL Presidents Message

“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time” Thomas Merton

Welcome to 2017. I know this will be a great year for Art and Artists in the Tri-Valley. It will be my pleasure to serve as your PAL President as well as your co-chair for PAL Workshops (by the way check out the information in this Portfolio about the Dale Laitinen two day Watercolor Workshop).

If you do not know me, let me tell you a little bit about who I am. I am a working artist. I was a teacher for 35 years in Fremont, California. I taught Fine Arts, Black & White Photography and Digital Imaging at the Junior High and High School levels. I also taught Calligraphy and Interior Design at the Adult level and have juried Art Shows for the Brentwood Art Association and for the Haggin Museum in Stockton.

I majored in art at the California College of the Arts (California College of Arts and Crafts) in Oakland, California; where I studied drawing with Bay Area artist, Roy De Forest. I also studied at The Academy of Art University, in San Francisco, California. I received my Bachelors Degree in Art and my Teaching Credential from California University East Bay. I studied painting with Pop Artists Mel Ramos, and Corbin Lapell; ceramics with Clayton Bailey; and sculpture with James Black, at California University East Bay.

I look forward to an exciting time serving you as your PAL President, and I look forward to meeting all of you and perhaps presenting you with an Award at one of our many shows.

    George Garbarino

Pleasanton Art League Proudly Presents a2-Day Watercolor Painting Workshop

    Featuring Dale Laitinen

Firehouse Art Center, 4444 Railroad Avenue, Pleasanton, CAMarch 25 and 26, 2017

Saturday & Sunday, 9:30 AM – 4:30 PMDale Laitinen has been roaming, hiking and painting the Sierra Nevada and the rest of the west for much of his life. His work extends from wilderness subjects of mountains, deserts, and canyons. His “Engineered Landscape” series, depicting dams, bridges, and roadways, reveal the aesthetic contrast between the man-made and natural.

Laitinen is a Fine Art graduate with a concentration in painting from San Jose State University. His depth of knowledge of the landscape is a result of many years as an independent long-haul trucker traveling the country. Having survived the trucking life, in 1985 he turned to full-time painting and teaching and has pursued this line of work up to the present day. His popular workshops are held throughout the United States.

“The Language of Landscape”, and “Landscape Essentials” are his teaching videos currently available through ccpvideos.com and dalelaitinen.com.

Dale Laitinen lives and paints upcountry in the western Sierra Nevada.

Designing Powerful Landscapes, Shape Shifting in Watercolor

Shape making is the heart of painting. In this workshop we paint shapes rather than things. The underlying abstract design is the foundation of truly creative work. Working from subject photos we will transform our subject to a highly designed but representational landscape.

In this workshop: you will learn to use large brushes to promote simplicity in your work.

Color layering and watercolor techniques. Design paintings from photos that don’t look like photos. Use opaque water media techniques. Spark the viewer’s imagination through your imagination.

    This workshop will sell-out FAST!

The workshop is limited to the first 24 Participants.

The workshop fee is $225 for early birds, or $235 after March 12, 2017. Register by mail ONLY. Please provide name, address, phone, email and mail with your check or money order payable to the Pleasanton Art League, c/o Workshops, 733 Division Street. Pleasanton, CA 94566. For more information, go to: www.pal-art.com or contact Linda or George Garbarino 925 462-8779 or email [email protected].
