What’s on in the Science Room?

More to see and do in the Science room in Term 3

Most of you know of or have meet, the resident lizard Charli, our two long necked turtles. Shelly and Squirtle.

Our stick insects are growing and changing and this term our giant Panda snails Laurel and Hardy have been

joined by a Macropanesthia rhinoceros , (AKA a giant burrowing cockroach)

ELECTIVES.

The Grade 5 & 6 electives get to explore a little more, this week for Science they have continued the build their understand-

ing of different sorts of energy and how they are made and used. The room was full of bursting balloons as they generated

static followed by blinking lights as they linked up batteries into basic circuits.

In the LEGO Technics elective, the senior students were challenged to create a moving model using some of the engineer-

ing skills they had learned. Two of the teams have graduated onto the programmable robotics of LEGO Mindstorms and are

learning how to code commands into their builds.

THIS WEEK IS SCIENCE WEEK.

DESTINATION MOON: MORE MISSIONS, MORE SCIENCE.

Students and I will learn about missions to the Moon and space programs that have solved some of the seemingly unsolvable problems. We will look at current and future space programs, operations and missions.

Many using big picture thinking in science to solve problems and how technology, engineering and mathematics can design new solutions. This will help forge our children’s future paths in the areas of space

operations and science,

Continuing this term, classes from Foundation to Grade 2 have changed specialists and new students are

learning how we can describe different types of matter and will have the opportunity to experiment with differ-

ent types of solids, liquids and gases and talk about how and where you might find and use them.

Mixing Vinegar and Bi-Carbonate together to create CO2 is a big favourite, as is watching solids melt or dis-

solve in warm water and then describing what can be seen.

The Grade 3 & 4 classes are continuing with their learning on how different types of matter mix. Currently there are crystals being grown, and eaten! (Don’t stress parents they are sugar crystals!!)

AEROSKOOL STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS

Last week our very talented Aerobics team members travelled to Diamond Creek to participate in the AeroSkools State Championships. This was our second competition of the year for our three teams, who have all been tirelessly preparing for this competition with extra trainings before school and during their lunch times.

Our Year Four and Five team ‘Pakky Panthers’ with Jordan, Bella, Blake, Reid, Gemma, Natasha performed wonderfully in the heats placing 17th out of 24 teams. Unfortunately this dynamic group did not make it through to the finals competitions, however we are super proud of their efforts and sportsmanship shown throughout the day.

‘Pakky Power’ our Year Five and Six team with, Achol, Abigayle, Ashleigh and Kaneisha also performed in the heats placing 11th out of 24 teams progressing them through to the next stage. The finals competition was a close one with all teams scoring within tenths of each other! They continued their great efforts but unfortunately did not qualify for Nationals. We are proud of their dedication they have shown in the aerobics program this year.

Lastly our Year Three students, Evie, Samantha, Lily and Zoe in ‘Pakky Panthers’ competed in the minis section placing 3rd in their finals! We are delighted that they have now qualified for the AeroSkools National competition in Queensland! This devoted team is always bounding in to rehearsals full of energy, and are all excited to continue their aerobics journey to Nationals. We look forward to sharing their progress with you all.

We are very proud of all our aerobics students and their efforts this year. It takes a lot of confidence to perform in front of large crowds. A big thank you to all our aerobics coaches this year; Miss Nixon, Miss Sbisa, Mrs Knight, Miss Hogan, Miss Cammerino and Mrs Dawson. They too have arrived for early morning rehearsals and spent lunchtimes training our teams. We thank you for all your efforts! Thank you to Mrs Raab for attending our recent competitions and helping with our hair.

Finally we would like to thank our school community for supporting us and cheering us on in our recent assembly performance. We hope to see lots more PCS students interested in our aerobics program and trying out next year when we hold our auditions for our 2020 teams!

Thank you,

Mrs Dawson

Aerobic Championships

By Lily Thomson and Sammy Woodbridge

On Thursday 1st August the Aerobic teams including the Year Three Team, Year Four/Five team, amd Year Five/Six team went to Aeroskool Championships at Diamond Creek.

It was 7.10am in the morning! It was an early start for our Aerobic teams. We all met at the OSHC

building, then we got ready to go out in front of OSHC.

So then we hopped into Miss Cammerino’s car that the Year Threes were going in and the mini bus

with Mrs Dawson and Mrs Raab and the rest of the teams.

After that, when we finally arrived we saw all the other teams we were competing against. This

made us very nervous and excited at the same time. It was time for our hair to be put into a bun and

change into our costume.

The Year Four/Five team went on stage first and they gave it all they had. Unfortunately they did

not place.

Next it was time for the Year Five/Six team to compete. They did excellent and made it to the finals,

but did not place.

Finally it was our turn the Year Three team to dance. We tried our best and got third place meaning

we made it to National Queensland.

We are proud of all the hard work the PCS Aerobic teams did. THANK YOU to all the teachers who

took time to train us.

Let’s leap into LEAP (Learn, Explore and Play)

LEAP is our schools very own combination children’s service. We have the capacity to assist you with your children’s needs for education from Six weeks – Five years with our LEAP, Early Learning Centre (ELC) as well as your Before School, After School and Vacation Care needs for Five – Tweleve year olds with our LEAP, Outside School Hours Care (OSHC).

Let’s look at a few projects and activities some of our children have been assisting with. Both our ELC and OSHC educators and children have created a specific tree in each of their areas as an interactive display. The families of our community have begun to add to this display to enhance the communication and strength of our partnerships.

Our ELC have their tree displayed in the corridor entrance area to the service, families pass by this every day, and they are invited to add to the tree at their own discretion. A leaf is provided for each child to add individual messages. This tree is growing day by day and will continue to be part of our ongoing interactions with our littlies and their families.

Our OSHC service has been very fortunate to have several of our families assist with the enhancement of developing our tree. We have been able to bring nature inside to create a central display for all to see upon entering the building. The children have been heavily involved in the planning of each stage of our ongoing tree project. This has been from the original development of the tree when originally seeing the ELC display and liking the concept, through to obtaining tree parts – some from family members, some from our very own trees within the grounds.

The kids began to research the various designs/leaf shapes which were able to be used. We have created our leaves, now our families and children can further add to this display through the comments they leave.

We are looking forward to hearing and seeing your comments.
