&iORCESTER is a city of hills and valleys. Hillslittle and big rise in all directions over themore tha n seven miles of north and southdimension and the nearly seven miles of east

and west. Between them lie valleys,-some broad. somenarrow.The hills grow higher as they range from south tonorth and from east to west, so that. averaging heightsabove the sea level, a plane is formed that uptilts sharplynorthward and westward.From the east the ascent is from the water level of LakeQuinsigarnond, 356 feet above the sea, the lowest pointin Worcester , to the 1,020 feet of the hilltop that lies onthe Paxton border, south of the Worcester-Paxton stateroad. which is the highest point in Worcester. From thesouth the land rises from 412 feet at the Sewage Purifica

-(tion Works at Quinsigarnond to the lofty summit ofWinter Hill on the edge of Holden, 980 feet in the air.Thus the extreme variation of elevation north and southis more than 550 feet, and that from east to west is morethan 650 feet.

The tilt of the land plane of Worcester is the morehighly emphasized because the upward slope extends wellbeyond the city's borders. On the west it termina tes twomiles beyond the Paxton line at the summit of the ridgeof Mt. Asnebumski t, 1,407 feet, the highest point betweenMt. Wachusett and Long Island Sound, and, south ofWachusett. between the Connecticut River and theAtlan tic Ocean. From Asnebumskit the high land extendsaround to the nor thern bo rder of Worcester. into the hillmasses which stretch eastward from Pine Hill in Holden,1.140 feet above the sea.

Worcester people who go to the White Mountains toseek the benefits of loftier altitudes are more ap t to maketheir summer residence lower down rather than higher up.Excepting in the very heart of the mountains the elevations of most of the resorts of the mountain and lakecountry of New Hampshire are less than those of theHeart of the Commonwealth especially those of the be tte rresidential neighborhoods. Making the towns about

the city the basis of comparison. the result is still lessfavorable to the Granite State.For example, North Conway is 521 feet above the sea,

which is 40 feet lower than the crest of Chestnut Street.Jackson, on the very edge of the Presidential Range, is759 feet, and Plymouth, on the Pemigewasset, is 483 feet,almost exactly level with City Hall. Nor th Woodstock,higher up the Pemigewasset, at the entrance to FranconiaNotch, is 739 feet. Lake Winnepesaukee is 500 feet. Itwill easily be seen that with the city's own lofty hills, andwith suburbs like Paxton, 1, 130 feet, and Rutl and, 1,200feet. and with summits like Mt. Asnebumskit, 1,407 feet,and Mt . Wachusett, 2,108 feet. all easily accessible andnot far beyond the borders, Worcester people, exceptingto procure change of scene, need never seek summer residence elsewhere.

Such a variation of height has Worcester, in manycases between points situated close together, as to affordan interesting study of comparisons. The list of cityelevations here given, furnished by the office of the Cit yEngineer, provides the basis upon which can be reckonedvery closely the height above the sea of practically anyspot in the city, and the relative height of that spot ascompared with that of any other spot. In using the table

it is well to bear in mind that the elevations given are abovesea level, and that perhaps the most convenient basic levelfor practical comparisons is that of City Hall, 481 feet .

To make more complete the understanding of theheights of Worcester. and for the knowledge of those whojourney through Central Massachusetts, a supplementarylist of altitudes of many of the loftier hills of WorcesterCounty is given. together with a few of the more distantsummits which are visible from the higher points of thecity and its environs . Included also are the altitudes ofthe towns and villages in the vicinity of Worceste r; ofthe various stations on the railroads centering in orpassing through Worcester; and of various other pointsof interest.
