is a mixture of Portland cement, water, aggregates, and in
some cases, admixtures.
The cement and water form a paste that hardens and
bonds the aggregates together.
Concrete is often looked upon as man made rock.
Concrete is a versatile construction material, adaptable to
a wide variety of agricultural and residential uses.
Concrete hasstrength, durability, versatility, and economy.
It can be placed or molded into virtually any shape and
reproduce any surface texture.

Concrete Ingredients
Quality of concrete depends on quality of paste
and quality of aggregates
each particle of aggregate is completely coated
with paste
All spaces between aggregate is filled with paste

Compressive Strength of Concrete
fcr is the average cylinderstrength
fc compressive strength for design
fc
~2500 psi - 18,000 psi, typically 3000 - 6000

Concrete Stress-Strain Curve
For short term loading. Over time concrete will creep and shrink.

Concrete Strain
Strain in concrete will be caused by loading, creep, shrinkage, and temperature change.
For scale, consider a 20 section of concrete,
fc = 4000 psi, under a stress, fc = 1800 psi.Determine the change in length.

Tensile Strength of Concrete
Tensile strength of concrete is about
~300 600 psi
Tensile strength of concrete isignored in design
Steel reinforcement is placed where tensile
stresses occur
