Dear MembersThe 2016 playing season is almost upon us and I look forward to what I’m sure will be a fantastic summer, with our course, as usual, prepared to a fantastic standard by our dedicated greens team, led by Jonathan Cleland.

Our club continues to buck the trend and is going from strength to strength. We are maintaining a high number of full ordinary members, in part due to a dedicated promotions team, and in part down to the hard work and dedication of the Greens team of Jonathan Craig, Vinnie, Robert, Phil and Derek in maintaining and improving the condition and playability of the course. Our best ambassadors of our club are you – the satisfied and happy members, and I would urge you all to let everyone you know, who is interested in golf, about Paisley Golf Club. We are fast approaching the stage where we will have to consider reintroducing a waiting list to become a member of Paisley Golf Club.

We continue to use social media to promote our club and to keep our members and visitors informed. Follow us at facebook.com/paisleygolfclub or on Twitter - @paisleygolfclub.

On the social scene, we have had a run of successful nights recently at Paisley Golf Club. A full house attended the club at Hogmanay to see in the New Year, followed by the club’s 50th Burns Supper in the middle of January. We then had a very well attended Presentation of Prizes night for the 2015 season and finally, a fantastic sell out night was had by all who attended the Strictly Come Dancing evening. The next social event is the Sportsman’s Dinner on Friday 1st April, where we will welcome Scott Glynn, ex rugby player from the East coast of Scotland and Paul Reid, most recently Commercial Manager with Dundee United FC. Paul specialises in impressions of famous sports personalities. We look forward to seeing as many members and guests come along for what is always a fantastic night.

Our caterer, Hugh Crichton will be running some “theme nights” over the next few months. The first of these will be an Indian theme night on Saturday 30th April. Please check the noticeboard and social media for more information in the next couple of weeks.

Match & HandicapThanks to an anonymous donation from a generous member and the success of the fund raising activities at the Presentation of prizes evening, the Match and Handicap team will shortly purchase a brand new Score Entry Terminal, which will replace the one currently situated at the bar for competition entry and score input.

The annual review of handicaps will take place this month - any player who has concerns over their handicap should contact the Match & Handicap Team.

The following CONGU changes to the handicapping system will be introduced from this season; The changes include:• Nine holes: It will be possible to put in Supplementary Scores over nine holes for handicaps. Six nine

hole competitions are planned throughout the year, please see additional information below. • Continuous Handicap Review: The introduction of a process to flag players with seven consecutive 0.1

handicap increases so that Handicap Committees can review and apply an immediate handicap increase if required.

• Four Ball Better Ball Handicap Allowance: In both stroke play and match play, the lowest handicap player will concede strokes to the other three players based on 90% of the difference between the full handicaps rather than 75% (3/4) as at present.

• Club handicaps: A new ‘Club Handicap’ of up to 54 will be introduced for adults as well as juniors. Handicaps higher than 28/36 will only be valid at the player’s home club for use in club-run events and cannot be used in opens etc.

• Reinstatement of Handicap Status: The reinstatement of a competition status handicap requires a player to submit three qualifying scores, which could be 18-hole competitions, 9-hole competitions or Supplementary Scores both at home and/or away.

Dates: The handicap year will now follow the calendar year of 1 January to 31 December, and a player’s handicap will be based on scores returned within that period.

Gents 9 Hole MedalsGentlemen, are you struggling to participate in medal competitions preventing you to retain your handicap? It can be a challenge to play 18 hole qualifying medals to maintain a handicap for a number of reasons - increasing demands on work or home life, your physical condition etc. Why not try the 9 Hole Qualifying Medals which offer an alternative and an opportunity for you to retain your handicap?

Details of 9 hole medals are listed below. • Front nine holes only.• White tees.• Stableford.• Book a time, on the day, in the Pro shop or via the terminal at the

bar only if the Pro shop is closed.• A 9 hole handicap allowance is calculated and a neutral 18 points

is awarded for the back nine holes.• Enter your gross score at each hole in to the terminal at the bar and the calculation is done for you.• Nine hole medals must not be part of an 18-hole Qualifying Competition.• The medals will run all day, day light dependant. The first 9-hole competition of the new season is scheduled for Wednesday 20th April.

Note: A Category 1 player (hcp up to 5) may participate in a Nine-Hole Qualifying Competition and his score should be recorded in his Player Handicap Record. No adjustment in handicap shall be applied i.e. his score must be disregarded for handicap purposes.

Medals & Qualifying Competitions

Members can reserve a tee time for Saturday medal competitions by accessing the Score Entry Terminal at the bar from the Wednesday evening at 19:00, 10 days prior to the competition or from the www.howdidido.com website from the Thursday morning 9 days prior to the competition. For Sunday medals, 9 hole competitions, Tuesday Medals and Optional Medals, entries are made on the day at the Professional’s shop. We will review this season if there is a demand to book in advance electronically for Sunday medals.

On the day of any competitions, members should always sign in at the Professional shop a minimum of 15 minutes prior to their allocated tee time, collect their score card and pay any relevant entry fees.

All players signing in at the Pro shop will be deemed to have entered the competition and, as such, must return a card, without exception, including non-returns. All cards must be signed by the marker and the player. The score, including non-returns, should be entered in the Score Entry Terminal at the bar and the card placed in the score box adjacent.

Any player who reserves a time to play in a competition, and fails to turn up or notify the Professional shop in advance, may have future bookings cancelled and will only be able to enter another competition a maximum 3 days in advance.

Knock-out Competitions

It is the responsibility of the entrant to check the draw sheets displayed on the M&H notice boards and make the challenge as soon as possible. The top name is the challenger. If there is a problem playing the tie by the closing date detailed for the round, the Match & Handicap committee should be notified as soon as possible. The top named player will be eliminated from the competition in the event of a tie not taking place by the specified date.

Prior to all matches commencing, agreement must be reached on how the match will be decided in the event of a tie after 18 holes.

All Club Finals will be completed on Finals day, with sudden death play-off, if necessary, from the first tee.

When extra holes are played in handicap competitions, strokes should be taken in accordance with the Handicap Stroke Index.

Inclement weather and Suspension of Play. There will be occasions where competitions will be suspended and/or abandoned. This could be for various reasons but heavy rain alone is not a reason for this. If a decision is taken to suspend play, a nominated official will sound the claxon to signify play has been suspended, and players must mark their ball as it lies. If it is decided to continue with the competition, play will resume from where it was suspended. If a competition is cancelled or postponed, it will be rescheduled for the next available date.

House

We are currently undertaking a feasibility study to cost the possible refurbishment of the Gents toilet and shower area in the locker room, a contractor has undertaken a detailed survey and his report is pending. We would be interested in speaking to any members who would have an interest in quoting or volunteering for this work or providing favourable rates for goods and services to help with the completion of this project, in particular joiners, tilers and plumbers. If you would be interested in helping with this, please contact David Findlay in the office on 0141 884 3903. In the meantime, Tam Walton has undertaken temporary works to repair the leak to the shower base, which would enable the showers to be back in use for the start of the season.

The refurbishment of the Kelvin Room is now complete. The total costs to date remain within the original budget, although don’t include the window repairs, which would come under normal maintenance work. The total cost for the project was £3934.52 plus VAT.

The project was brought in on budget thanks, in no small measure, to the considerable contribution by the Committee members notably in the lifting of the old carpet and the preparation of the floor, before the carpet was laid.

The goodwill of the members and staff continues with the welcome refurbishment of the chairs in the Kelvin room and thanks go to Karen, Vicki, Brian, David and Bobby Crown.

Practice and putting green membership

We would like to remind members that we have introduced a new Putting and Practice membership. The purpose of this membership category is to provide the opportunity for those who visit the club regularly, but who do not play golf for whatever reason, to become part of Paisley Golf Club. This category of membership provides the opportunity to utilise the club’s putting green and practice facilities. It also enables you to use the full facilities of our clubhouse including the invitation of guests. Please note that Putting and Practice membership does not provide playing (including as a guest of another member) or voting rights at the club.

The application for Putting and Practice membership follows the normal process, and requires interview/approval by the current Paisley Golf Club committee and admission is at their sole discretion. This membership category is limited to a maximum of 10% of the existing overall membership. Putting and Practice membership fees are currently £50.00 per annum which includes a £25.00 bar / food credit.

If you require any further information, please don’t hesitate to ask at the bar for an application form or, alternatively, contact the Managing Secretary David Findlay on 0141 884 3903.

PromotionsDuring April / early May, the work to

install the new course information board and the Tee Plaques should be completed. In

addition, all point of play markers and Tee and Fairway distance markers will also be replaced, complementing the new signage. New scorecards will be introduced; these will include a pin position guide illustrated using a grid system, and the course information sign will advise

all golfers of the relevant position on each particular day, either position

A, B, C or D.

Greens UpdateThe Greens winter program began in late October 2015. As with previous years, the plan was to carry out drainage installation work on three greens namely the 4th, 12th and the 14th.

Rainfall/Inclement weather conditionsThe total rainfall for 2015 was 2.2 metres, 0.6 metres of rainfall was recorded during November and December alone.

As result of this sustained rainfall, our Course Manager, Jonathan Cleland took the decision to postpone the work on the aforesaid greens in favour of smaller and equally important projects.

The decision was based on the soft conditions and the perceived damage that would be caused transporting the heavy machinery to the extremities of the course. The continued inclement weather proved that this was the correct decision.

These new detailed projects are ongoing and are as follows:

Drainage Works New drainage has been installed and repair work undertaken at the following locations:1st Hole - both sides at landing area6th Hole - right of fairway landing area and to the rear of green13th Hole - to the rear of green14th Hole - short of fairway and both sides of green16th Hole - landing area and short of green18th Hole – front of tees

These works are complete and only require seed/turf once conditions are suitable.

Pathways Entrances/ExitsDrainage is being installed and ground prepared to install turf protection mats at the following pathways: Entrance at path leading to 6th teeEnd of path leading to 8th greenEnd of path leading to 14th fairwayEntrance at path leading to 15th tee

PathwaysThe pathway running up to the 16th tees will be prepared and rubber mats installed to bring up to the same standard as the pathway from 13th green to the 14th tees.

Continued RainfallJanuary 2016 saw a further 244 mm of rainfall. The winter program suffered a minor setback with the discovery of large sections of rock which had to be removed with rock breakers. This inevitably slowed the progress of the winter program.

Other info:

We have excavated in excess of 600m of drainages trenches. 450m of

drainage pipe has been installed, 40 tons of drainage gravel and 60 tons of rootzone

sand have been required to backfill.

This work has been completed during a particularly challenging winter with over 1 metre of rainfall recorded since

November 2015, demonstrating the commitment and dedication of

the green-keeping team.

Page 7: Paisley Golf Club - Microsofthowdidido.blob.core.windows.net/clubsitespublic/... · Our caterer, Hugh Crichton will be running some “theme nights” over the next few months. The

Drainage Works Ongoing16th Hole –Root zone backfill still to be completed on some drains, to be completed when ground condition allow material to be transported to site.6th Hole –Root zone backfill required to complete works.18th Hole –Rock breaking on going prior to installation.14th Hole –Rock breaking on going prior to installation.

Works PendingDrainage repairs at 3rd hole.Turf has been removed to the rear of the 13th green to expose a previously installed drain. This will be a temporary measure to stop surface water from higher ground spilling onto the green. A surface connection is normally maintained here through aeriation; however, no aeration has been possible since October due to saturated ground conditions.

Purchase of Scarifying ReelsThe club have recently purchased a set of Scarifier Reels, this new equipment will assist in thatch management/reduction to greens and tees.

In relation to thatch reduction we implemented an intensive renovation programme carried out during allocated maintenance weeks, this programme has consisted of hollow-coring and the use of Graden Sand Injection. This work has reduced our depth and percentage of thatch significantly to a current manageable level and in conjunction with our continued routine maintenance of deep-tine aeration and sand top-dressing we now have drier, firmer greens.

We are now in a position that we can target future thatch accumulation with a less aggressive and disruptive technique. This investment in the new Scarifiers will allow us to manage/remove future thatch accumulation on a monthly basis during the growing season as part of our routine maintenance. This will significantly reduce the need for the disruptive techniques previously mentioned above and therefore less disruption to the putting surfaces.

Trolley Shed / Locker RoomSome inroads have been made in the Trolley Shed Waiting List in the last couple of months, with 4 spaces becoming available and being allocated to members on the Waiting List. The Waiting List has therefore been reduced from 19 to 15 as at the start of March.

Due to the incidences of keys breaking in the lock of the Trolley Shed door, a new digital key pad has been installed for the doorway. Those with a Trolley Shed key will now require to access the Shed using a passcode, which has been e-mailed out to those with an allocated space. If anyone has not received the e-mail, or has difficulty with it, please either enquire in the Pro Shop or the Office for the information.

Would members please also note that the area behind the Trolley Shed is not a dumping ground for old trolleys. It is the member’s responsibility to dispose of their old trolley rather than leave it lying behind the shed. Any member having done so recently, is asked to immediately remove the trolley from the area.

Lockers – we currently have a waiting list for lockers of approximately 12 members. If you would like to have your name added to the waiting list, please contact David Findlay in the office.
