Pair-Coaching Domino Game
presented by Victor Bonacci & Scott Dunn
at Global Scrum Gathering® Orlando 2016
Say Hi to Someone
Ask them:
Who is your favorite duo?
Are they adventuresome?
Are they a Space Oddity?
Ask somebody:
What is Pair-Coaching?
Is it elementary?
Have you tried pair-coaching?
…no can do?
…or can you not go for that?
How was it?

What is Self-Efficacy?
A person’s belief
in their capacity
to successfully
perform a task.
Albert Bandura
Self-Efficacy
Confidence in Abilities
Effective Engagement in Behaviors
Achievement of Desired Goals
High vs Low Self-Efficacy
Bandura 1994
1. Enactive Self-MasteryFailure or success of actual performance
Break into small, achievable steps
2. Role-Modeling
Vicarious Experiences
Observing others or visualizing self-mastery
3. Social Persuasion
Verbal Persuasion(Pep Talks)
“You got this, Bert!”
4. Physiological Cues
Somatic (body) or Emotional states
Pair-Coaching’s domain:
1. Mastery / Experience• actual performance
2. Role-Modeling• failure or success of others
3. Verbal/Social persuasion• pep talks
4. Physiological cues• bodily cues
Patterns / Roles
of Pair-Coaching
Prime StanceBeing of service to help the client/coachee
Bound by the ethics of the coaching profession:
• Only the client’s agenda leads the conversation
Pure Coaching (NOT mentoring, training or teaching)
ContrarianDebate starters (Smarter, Faster, Better)
second coach can provide much needed empathy, a voice advocating to try the experiment to find learning.
(* Good Cop / Bad Cop; Devil’s Advocate; Prescriptive / Progressive, Yin Yang; parents)
Trainer / Observer
One coach leads the training while the other:
•observes to offer feedback later
• tags-in and teaches
• scans the audience for outliers / those needing attention
Driver / NavigatorThis pairing resembles the Trainer/Observer, but it can happen outside of the full team environment. Two coaches can make light work of otherwise daunting tasks, saving time, catching errors and preventing rework. A Product Owner / Scrum Master relationship may make use of this dynamic during a story writing exercise or preparing for a complex backlog grooming session.
(see Kent Beck’s definition of pair-programming)
* Helmsman?
Co-LearnersWhen the subject matter is new to both participants, or the terrain is dangerous, each coach helps the other understand in very short feedback loops. This type of dynamic may happen when we pair up to do exercises at a conference or other training session. Much like saying “two heads are better than one”, each of us has our own perspective on things, but by listening to and learning from each other, we help increase our own knowledge bit by bit.
Senpai / KohaiThe Japanese culture gave us the senpai/kohai relationship. Similar to a mentor / protégé (or a senior / junior) pairing, this role can be thought of as a more formalized “buddy system” to be used when newer members join an organization. This can be a very beneficial role to play as an agile coach. Thinking back to your first days on the job, did someone help you with onboarding, telling you how to navigate the HR paperwork, where to submit the expense reports and what time is best for booking the meeting rooms?
Growth CoachAccountability / Mentorship
Other Patterns?
Domino Game - Instructions• Each domino has two numbers
1. Use one number to find a partner
2. Use second number as your experience level
3. Add up ALL dots on BOTH dominoes. Us the sum to identify your scenario
4. Role play for 4-5 minutes
5. Exchange dominoes
6. Repeat using new number to find new partner
• play 5 iterations
11 Scenarios (based on SUM of TWO dominos)
Sum Role / Pattern Scenario
0 – 5 Co-Learning Understanding User Story Mapping
6 – 10 Kohai/Sempai Introducing new Scrum Master to teams
11 – 14 Driver/Navigator Crafting a retrospective agenda
15 – 16 Trainer/Observer Conducting a Story Writing workshop
17 Kohai/Sempai Explains the social/political office landscape
18 Driver/Navigator SM helps PO prepare for Release Planning
19 Growth Coach One holds other accountable for “homework”
20 – 21 Prime Pair coaches SM in navigating conflict
22 – 25 Contrarian Initiating a design debate
26 – 30 Trainer/Observer Co-training a CSM course with a CST
31 – 36 Contrarian Negotiating with executive leadership
… OR make up a scenario of your own.
Debrief• What observations did you have?
• How was the experience? … comfortable?
for the benefit of external parties
(team, individuals, executives…)
for the benefit of internal parties
(the coaches)
