Painting 101 Painting 101 is a project about that will take students through specialist techniques of painting in acrylic. From preparing a board to finishing with glazes, patterns, varnishes. Students will be shown techniques that can be used to create highly original works of Art and Design. We will look in depth at how to plan a composition, the stages used to begin and finish a painting, and to install the work once it’s finished. These practical techniques will be contextualized by exciting and thought provoking artists and artworks from the past and present during keynote lectures and gallery visits.

KABLAM-OOOOKablam-oooo!!!! Is a project about comic book art.

We will look at historic contemporary practice of comic art, from

Victorian caricatures, to Political Satire, Storyboards, through to

creating your very own self published comic.

You will learn new drawing and measuring skills, skills in page layout,

some Graphic Design skills, and ways to tell a story sequentially through

drawn and collaged images.

What have I learnt?

Painting 101 – Before University, I studied fine art so I had some knowledge of painting techniques but from Painting 101, I have learnt so many new techniques, such as using washes of colours, undertones etc which I used in my painting which helped massively when creating layers of colours, I also learnt how different artists from different eras use to paint, artists from the Victorian era, could not take photos so they would have to stand and paint what they saw first hand.

Kamblam-oooo – from the second field project, I have learnt so many new things such as the rules of comics, comic book layouts, how to use the photocopier to create multiple copies etc. I have also come across many new artists that gave me inspiration through out this project.

What challenges did I encounter?

Painting 101 – The only challenge I really came across through this project was when

I was painting my second board, even though I prepped the board the same way

with emulsion, using the same was of colour, but I found once I started to layer the

colours I saw that the colours weren’t as vibrant or opaque, these are the problems I

had with the jellyfish so as a last resort I used card and painted on top of that to

create vibrancy.

Kamblam-oooo – I didn’t really encounter many challenges in this project, only thing

I could say would be the fact that a week before the deadline, so this was quite

stressful.

What have you learnt from working

with others from outside your

specialist discipline?

Painting 101 – To be honest all the work we did was individually done and everyone would keep to themselves, but when we were discussing our final outcomes, you could tell where the others came from in terms of their specialist discipline for example discussing their inspiration i.e. fashion would take inspiration from fashion designers.

Kamblam-oooo – I have learnt to be more imaginative with my ideas and also to experiment more with new techniques more.

How has your practice

expanded?

• Painting 101 – I have gained more skills from another specialist

area which I use to study, I have been able to expand my

knowledge further that could be used in the future.

• Kamblam-oooo – I have gained more knowledge in another

aspect of art which I can take on further into my practice in the

future as making comics can be made digitally.

What will I carry on doing in

the future?

Personally even though I enjoyed both Field projects, if I had to pick one to carry on with in future, it would have to be the making of the comics as there is a larger market out there for comics to be sold and I personally enjoyed it more.

500 Word Script (Slides 1-5)

Slide 1 – The first term project was Painting 101 which was one of my top picks. “Painting 101 is a project about that will take students through

specialist techniques of painting in acrylic.

From preparing a board to finishing with glazes, patterns, varnishes. Students will be shown techniques that can be used to create highly original

works of Art and Design. We will look in depth at how to plan a composition, the stages used to begin and finish a painting, and to install the work

once it’s finished.

These practical techniques will be contextualized by exciting and thought-provoking artists and artworks from the past and present during keynote

lectures and gallery visits.” And following from this….

Slide 2 – One of the first tasks given to us was that we had to go to the National Museum in Cardiff Central, where we had to draw at least five

pictures from first hand where we had a variety of artworks, artefacts etc to choose from but because it was busy in the museum I took

photographs of the ones that I was drawn to the most and drew these from home.

Slide 3 – From the pencil sketches I did and photos I took previously in the museum, from these drawings and photographs, I had to create a new

abstract and contemporary piece of work, so I combined different aspects and created something entirely new. I decided to choose the

underwater scene as I was drawn more towards this idea than the other pencil sketch I drew up. This also challenged my imagination to try and

come up with an entirely new composition which was fun but very challenging.

Also in this field project, we had a variety of workshops showcasing a variety of painting techniques that I used in the painting like colour washes,

cardboard cut outs, dry brush, dry on dry, dry and wet and priming. All these techniques were very helpful to create layers of colour, textures and

seamless blends. If I didn’t have the workshops I don’t think I would have created good composition without knowing these painting techniques.

Slide 4 – From the first original painting I did, I then had to do a second painting but this time incorporating cardboard cut outs, so I decided to add

more sea life to it to create a finished scene.

Slide 5 – This is the final outcome with the cardboard cut outs, comparing both paintings the first one is a lot stronger, the second painting is where I

had the issues with, I did all the same steps as the first one and it just wasn’t going to plan and I had to meet the deadline.

500 Word Script (Slides 6-10)

Slide 6 – For the second term of Field, I was given my first choice which is Kablam-oooo. “Kablam-oooo!!!! Is a project about comic book art.

We will look at historic contemporary practice of comic art, from Victorian caricatures, to Political Satire, Storyboards, through to creating your very

own self-published comic. You will learn new drawing and measuring skills, skills in page layout, some Graphic Design skills, and ways to tell a story

sequentially through drawn and collaged images”.

Slide 7 – We had a workshop with James, out lecturer at the time, and he was discussing the different variations of comic art ranging from old

school to new school art and techniques used. James also showed us his own comics that he made which was quite interesting, revealing some tips

whilst discussing his comics.

From this we had to create an 8 page folded comic based on anything we wanted, so I decided to base it off my dogs life, showcasing a day in

the life of Oreo.

Slide 8 – All three of these artists have a playful aspect to their work. Jen Mussari shows sound and action by the type she uses and how she adds the

extra effect to create movement. Erik Marinovich puts more texture into his typography which makes it more appealing to the eye. Chris Piascik is

very playful with how he uses his colour and placements of the type to create a sense of pace.

For my comic idea, I wanted to carry on from my folded A4 comic I created previously in a workshop based on my dog Oreo and his daily

adventures and how naughty he can get. So, I did some research on different comics that have animals related in them. So, I researched into

Garfield, FukuFuku Kitten Tales by Kanata Konami and Felix the Cat.

Slide 9 – I started off sketching out my comic using the techniques I have learnt from James over the weeks.

Slide 10 – I took inspiration from many artists throughout this project, for the typography, I took inspiration from Jen Mussari with how she creates

movement and texture into her typography so using her as inspiration I used this throughout my comic, an example of this is that when it came to

bath time, I wanted to create a sense of drips throughout the text which I think I created perfectly using inspiration from Jen Mussari. The black and

white artwork of my comic relates to the 2 comics I researched into like FukuFuku and Felix the Cat, by doing this I feel like it relates to the comic

artists and also relates to the research I did which then led me to create my comic in black and white. I also added dot work and cross hatching

inspired by Robert Crumb and how he used it in his own comics, I found these techniques quite useful to experiment with and to also create some

texture depth to the artwork I did.
