HIRING A PROFESSIONAL PAINTER

One way to be assured that you will get a great professional, is to use one of our Paint Place Approved Painters. If you prefer to find your own, here’s our best advice to make sure you get a qualified, quality painter.

Once you have a shortlist of painters, there's a few questions that you should ask to make sure you're looked after.

‣ ALWAYS check credentials and experience. ALWAYS! ‣ How long have you been in business? Are you registered? and Do

you have the appropriate licenses? ‣ Are you insured and a member of any state or national groups? ‣ Can you provide references? ‣ Do you sub contract or work for yourself? ‣ Does the quote include preparation and clean up? ‣ Do you offer a guarantee? ‣ What products do you use? Always make sure they are well known,

high quality products.

TOP TIPS FROM THE EXPERTS

Page 7: Paint Place Colour Trends for 2015

A good paint brush will hold more paint, helping you get a smoother finish on your wall and reducing that "splashing" effect when you lift your brush off.

The best way to check the quality of a brush, is to run your hands through the filament (or bristles). It should feel full and have a slight resilience. Value range brushes will not last as long as a premium grade brush, but they will have their place where finish, quality and brush life are not a priority.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT BRUSH

Page 8: Paint Place Colour Trends for 2015

CHOOSING THE RIGHT FILAMENT (BRISTLE)

The filament is the long haired strands on the end of a brush, also known as "Bristles". For a quick guide, follow the below points

Synthetic Filament : Work well with almost all paints, but are best suited when using water based paints.

100% Pure Bristle : These types of brushes are 100% pure bristle, and are best suited for oil based paints.

Polybristle Blend : Work well with almost all paints due to the blend in the bristles. They will work well with water based paints as well as oil based due to the mixed blend.

STYLE OF BRUSHES

The next thing that you need to decide is what type of brush style you need. There are a few basic styles to understand, which will help make your project easier.

Paint/Wall Brushes : These are the most common type of brush. With a shorter handle than cutting brushes they come in a variety of sizes for a range of different paint jobs.

Cutter Brushes : These are the go to brush for cutting in before rolling, with angles cut for filling in around windows and door frames, ceilings and corners. They will have a lot less filament than wall brushes as holding paint is not the main priority of these brushes, but the long handle helps to control brush strokes.

Page 9: Paint Place Colour Trends for 2015

The cutter brushes comes in Sash, Angle and Oval shapes made for sharper, more accurate painting.

All of the brush types come in various sizes from 38mm and smaller, to 100mm width. The small brush heads are used for finer jobs like furniture, touching up and hobby paint- ing, while the larger brushes are used for walls and ceilings.

Our Paint Specialists at your local Paint World store can help you with the right choice to make sure your project looks like it was done by a professional. Come in to store and have a chat with one of our team members to pick the right brush for your job.

Just as brushes come in different shapes and sizes, so do paint rollers. Selecting the right roller for the job will help make your project easier and give you a better final outcome. There are a couple of things to take into consideration when selecting the right roller. We’ll take you through a few of those right now.

CHOOSING THE RIGHT ROLLER

Page 11: Paint Place Colour Trends for 2015

PILE HEIGHT OR NAPThe pile height, or nap as its more commonly known to painters, refers to the width of the fabric/material of the roller. Generally, the thicker the nap, the more paint it will hold. The rule of thumb here is, the smoother the surface and glossier the paint, the shorter the nap. The general nap sizes that you will encounter are:

Short Naps or 5mm-8mm : These don't hold as much paint as the others, but are the best kind to use with a glossy paint as they leave a thin and very smooth coating.

Regular Naps of 10mm-12mm : Will hold most types of paint very well and leaves a soft stippled effect. These rollers are better suited to water based paints and to be used on smooth to semi smooth surfaces. They hold more paint than the short nap but the finish is not as smooth.

Long Nap 22mm-32mm : These rollers are suitable for all paints and will work well on surfaces like cement and brickwork. They hold a lot of paint and are great where heavy coverage is important. These rollers can work paint into textured surfaces due to the holding capacity and will produce a deep stippled effect on almost any surface.

FABRIC AND MATERIALS OF ROLLERS

Materials do come down to a preference, but there are some very good reasons to pick a specific material if you are trying to go for a particular effect or painting a certain area.

Woven Polyester : These are suitable for all types of paints

Knitted Polyester : More suitable for water based applications. Great for epoxy and fibreglass coatings because of the smoother finish they give

Sheepskin : Generally used on rougher surfaces as the thickness of the sheepskin will reach into irregularities

Foam : For use with Full Gloss and Semi Gloss where a mirror finish is required

Micro Fibre : Can be used with most water based paints. Best suited for Acrylic Enamels

Textured : Coarse, medium and fine hairs for different texture effects. Suitable with most paints

Paint Rollers come in 100’s of sizes, shapes and makes. It might feel like it takes time to find the right one, but your walls will be thankful for it.
