Paines Plough Limited is a company limited by guarantee and a registered charity.

Registered Company no: 1165130Registered Charity no: 267523

Paines Plough is an award-winning, nationally and internationally renowned touring theatre company, specialising exclusively in commissioning and producing new plays and helping playwrights develop their craft.

Paines Plough was founded in 1974. It was named after the beer its founders were drinking (Paines bitter) and the pub in which they were drinking it (The Plough) at the moment the company was conceived.

Since then we’ve produced more than 100 new productions by world renowned playwrights like Stephen Jeffreys, Abi Morgan, Sarah Kane, Mark Ravenhill, Dennis Kelly and Mike Bartlett. We’ve toured those plays to hundreds of places from Manchester to Moscow to Maidenhead.

It’s been a phenomenal year for Paines Plough. The company has been perpetually in motion delivering a multi-faceted country-wide programme. If measured in terms of productions made, quality of delivery, miles travelled and increase in audience numbers, this in itself is considerable achievement. But something else is going on. The energy radiating from Paines Plough’s Aldwych office is kinetic in the truest sense. James and George have transmitted their artistic vision to a network of collaborators to create a whole new model which enables Paines Plough’s work to emerge from multiple producing sources, and concurrently. This plural approach refreshes the palette of plays offered by like-minded regional producing centres while extending the reach of Paines Ploughs output to new and returning audiences across the UK. The effect is palpable and demonstrably successful. The year culminated with an increased three-year funding agreement from the Arts Council, an essential recognition of the quality, the value and the future prospect.

There are many to acknowledge. Firstly James and George, who together with a highly motivated, talented team in Claire, Tara and Hanna, have re-ignited a passion for being on the road, introducing and connecting artistic choice with popular demand. My colleagues on the Board have equally shown courage and commitment to the vision, its growth and delivery. We’ve had to work pretty hard to keep up! Strongest thanks go to the many co-producers and host theatres who have signed up to and helped deliver the Paines Plough ethos. The list is long, and illustrative of how many artistic directors around the country fly the flag for new work and audience development. A visit to the Sheffield Crucible to enjoy three superlative new plays in the newly launched Roundabout auditorium last October was a shimmering example of partnership at its very best.

I will leave the Artistic Directors to pay tribute to the artists.

We believe everyone should have the chance to see the best new plays, no matter where they live.

That’s why we’re obsessive about touring our work as far and wide as possible, to every corner of the UK and beyond. Our Programme 2011 saw us tour 11 productions to 36 towns and cities, from Newcastle to Southampton via Lowestoft, Leicester and Liverpool. We presented 206 individual performances across eight of the nine Arts Council England regions, missing out just one – London. Our productions were seen by 26,544 people, up 91% on 2010.

Alongside expanding our geographic reach, we’ve extended our work across scales. Our tour of Mike Bartlett’s LOVE, LOVE, LOVE was the biggest in the company’s history, taking in 15 mid-scale theatres including Liverpool Playhouse, Cambridge Arts Theatre and Glasgow Citizens, prior to a sold out run at The Galway International Arts Festival. The success of the tour secured a London run in co-production with The Royal Court in 2012, and Mike Bartlett was awarded the TMA Theatre UK Award for Best New Play.

Meanwhile we travelled further and wider than ever before on the small scale. Our co-production with Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse of Laurence Wilson’s TINY VOLCANOES toured to numerous places Paines Plough had never visited before, including Folkestone, Harrogate, Berwick-upon-Tweed, Lyme Regis, Trowbridge and Totnes.

Our A PLAY, A PIE AND A PINT series of three world premieres opened with co-producers Òran Mór in Glasgow before touring to The Traverse in Edinburgh, The Belgrade in Coventry and Manchester Royal Exchange. Over twelve weeks of touring, more than 4,000 people enjoyed a free pie and pint whilst sampling new plays by leading writers Leo Butler, Katie Douglas and David Watson. Audiences for A PLAY, A PIE AND A PINT were up 31% on last year.

At the heart of our goal to make the best new plays available to everyone, everywhere, is a major new project that will define the future of the company. For the first time in Paines Plough’s 38 year history we’re building our own theatre – The Roundabout Auditorium.

Our small-scale in-the-round touring amphitheatre will seat 150 people. It will flat pack into a lorry and pop up in any space - from existing theatres to village and school halls, community and sports centres, warehouses and even parks.

The Roundabout Auditorium will enable us to reach people who currently have limited opportunity to experience high quality contemporary new plays, and offer them a thrilling theatrical experience.

The Roundabout Auditorium offers Paines Plough a sustainable and scalable model for touring more plays, to more places whilst keeping the quality of

Page 10: Paines Plough Plough An… · Titas Halder Jack Lowe Stef O’Driscoll Co-producers Birmingham Repertory Theatre Crucible Theatre, Sheffield Drum Theatre, Plymouth Jersey Arts Trust

8

writing, acting, directing and design to our renowned high standards. We hope its legacy will be an increased attendance and enjoyment of new plays nationwide.

With our partners Sheffield Theatres, we built a prototype Roundabout Auditorium in 2011. Over two months at Sheffield Crucible, we showcased three world premieres within the auditorium by Duncan Macmillan, Nick Payne and Penelope Skinner, performed by an ensemble of actors. The audience response was thrilling.

Now we need to raise £90,000 to build the full bells and whistles touring Roundabout Auditorium which will hit the road in Spring 2013. It might sound like a lot of money, but really it’s a steal for a fully functioning theatre that will last for many years to come. Most new theatres cost millions, and are static in one locality. Roundabout is for everyone.

We hope you’re as excited by the Roundabout Auditorium as we are, and that you’ll consider joining us to help make the project a reality.

We finished the year with a special COME TO WHERE I’M FROM featuring five Jersey playwrights at The Jersey Opera House in St Helier. There are now COME TO WHERE I’M FROM plays available as podcasts via our website, ensuring our work is accessible to anyone with an internet connection, anywhere in the world.1,415 from 25 countries listened to a podcast in 2011.

Alongside producing plays, we’re dedicated to finding ways to help writers develop their craft. We have renewed our exciting partnership with Channel Four in support of the very best emerging playwrights, whilst deepening our commitment to supporting underserved

mid-career playwrights through our development space The Big Room.

We were delighted to start the year by being included in Arts Council England’s new National Portfolio with a small uplift in our annual subsidy. We continue to work hard to increase earned and fundraised income, reducing our ACE subsidy to 48% of turnover in 2011/12, down from 61% the previous financial year and 87% the year before that. Expenditure on productions was 56% of turnover and 118% of ACE subsidy.

Paines Plough never works alone. Everything we have done this year has been in partnership with other theatres and organisations, whose shared passion for new plays and serving audiences has been inspiring and energising.

Our biggest thanks goes to our incredible team here at Paines Plough whose skill, flair and tireless commitment has resulted in an output that belies the size of the company.

Our Programme 2012 will offer more of the same – exceptional productions of seminal new plays by the most exciting playwrights, touring to every corner of the UK. We look forward to welcoming you to a Paines Plough show soon.

Overview 2011

More plays, more places

“One of the busiest and highest quality producers of touring work around.”- The Stage 100, January 2012

Our Programme 2011 featured 11 productions (up from nine in 2009) which toured to 36 places (up from 33 in 2010) over 206 individual performances. We toured to eight of the nine Arts Council England regions, excluding just London, visiting everywhere from major cities to rural villages.

New audiences

“I have often heard so many wonderful things about this company and was thrilled to finally see one of your productions - and to see that the hype is justified.”- Rosalind Steele, audience member

We devise production models that make our work as enticing and accessible as possible to new audiences, whilst trying to ensure that there’s a play for everyone in our programme. So while LOVE, LOVE, LOVE played traditional proscenium arch theatres, WASTED premiered at the Latitude Festival in a tent packed with 600 people, fired by visuals and scored live on stage by Kwake Bass. Directly speaking to a young audience, the show will embark on a tour of Student Unions in 2102. Our A PLAY, A PIE AND A PINT season with its short format and lunchtime / early evening showtimes, combined with cheap ticket prices and a free pie and pint, attracted completely new audiences willing to take a risk on something new.

The gig like atmosphere at THE 8TH at Manchester International Festival attracted music fans to see a piece of theatre, and see their hero Paul Heaton create work in a completely new way with playwright Ché Walker. With only five permanent in-the-round theatres in the country, most people have never had the opportunity to see a play in-the-round. We believe it’s the most exciting way to watch theatre, and so our Roundabout Auditorium will offer something extra special to audiences. The original 3D experience.

10 11

New partnerships

“We would love to bring another Paines Plough show to Quarterhouse, since Tiny Volcanoes we have had many more high quality theatre companies approach us about bringing their show here.”- Roberta Spicer, Programmer, The Quarterhouse, Folkestone

We never work alone, so we could do nothing without our partners. We co-produced work with 10 other organisations, ranging from theatres to other companies to festivals. We were hosted by 31 theatres as a visiting company.

Playwrights

Paines Plough has always been a writer’s company. Our Programme 2011 saw us produce the work of 15 playwrights of whom seven were working with the company for the first time. The playwrights we worked with crossed the spectrum from Olivier Award winner Mike Bartlett to debutant Kate Tempest, and were drawn from across the country from Glasgow to Jersey.

Digital

We’re constantly evolving and expanding our digital output with the aim of ensuring anyone with an internet connection, anywhere in the world, has access to Paines Plough’s work. In addition to free-to-listen podcasts of 55 COME TO WHERE I’M FROM plays, we create dynamic digital content around all our productions including film trailers, video blogs, rehearsal diaries, photo albums and educational insights. Our website welcomed 41,878 unique visitors in 2011, and our Twitter following rose 360% to 4255.

Unsolicited Scripts

“The promptness and clarity of Paines Plough in communicating with writers is to be applauded.” - Bob Barnett, playwright

Every play we receive is read in-house by our core team. We confirm receipt with the writer by phone, and then aim to get back to them within four weeks. In 2011 we read and responded to 459 unsolicited scripts.

The Big Room

“One of the reasons Paines Plough are doing so brilliantly is that they have enormous insight into how writers work best...Away from the noise of London, I had the creative space I needed to make a huge advance in my work. It is so rare and so valuable to get a space like this where you can have complete focus.”- Robin French, playwright

Page 14: Paines Plough Plough An… · Titas Halder Jack Lowe Stef O’Driscoll Co-producers Birmingham Repertory Theatre Crucible Theatre, Sheffield Drum Theatre, Plymouth Jersey Arts Trust

12

The Big Room is our bespoke development programme for mid-career playwrights, offering a menu of resources from which writers can choose what they need, when they need it, on their terms. In 2011 The Big Room provided rehearsal space, actors, directors, brokerage and mentoring at playwright’s request. We organised writing retreats for Katie Douglas, Kate Tempest and Ché Walker at The Orchard Project in upstate New York and for Robin French, James Graham, Stacey Gregg, Matt Hartley and Sam Holcroft in Jersey, as guests of The Jersey Arts Trust. Thousands of words were written in our dedicated writer’s room in our office. Meanwhile, we have renewed our partnership with Channel Four in support of the best emerging talent from across the UK and have offered bursaries to five outstanding playwrights: Alice Birch (Oxford), Elinor Cook (London), Ella Greenhill (Liverpool), Alistair McDowell (Middlesborough) and Reuben Johnson (Manchester).

Open Auditions

“I think it’s fantastic that Paines Plough make such an effort to see new talent - one of the only companies doing this, so well done and thank you!”- Natasha James, actor

Many actors find themselves in the frustrating position of needing to be in something to be seen, and needing to be seen to be in something, so we have committed to hosting quarterly open auditions in order to meet actors previously unknown to the company. Auditions are allocated on a first come, first served basis, ensuring open access for all. We met with 570 actors through Open Auditions in 2011, in London, Edinburgh and Oxford.

Workshops

“Just wanted to personally thank you for coming to talk to the group last week. It was perfectly pitched and everyone got a lot out of it - people felt very inspired and felt anything was possible after hearing you!”- Kristine Landon-Smith, Artistic Director, Tamasha Theatre Company

We’ve run a huge range of workshops for actors, directors, producers and playwrights across the country, both in tandem with our productions and independently of them.

International

“Paul Heaton’s The8th is the best thing I’ve seen at MIF11 thus far, and it was up against some tough competition! Stunning evening.”- @hannahpyt on Twitter

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE played a week to capacity houses at The Galway International Festival in July 2011. Our first international festival co-production followed soon after with the world premiere of Paul Heaton and Ché Walker’s THE 8TH at The Manchester International Festival.

Awards

“Mike Bartlett’s LOVE, LOVE, LOVE was one of the new writing highlights of the year.”- The Stage

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE was awarded the Theatre Awards UK (formerly TMA Award) for Best New Play. The production was also shortlisted for Best Regional Production in the Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers Choice Awards, as voted for by the public.

Associate Companies

“It has enabled the company, which is at a vital and early stage in its development, to build a solid infrastructure, momentum, and to develop and produce projects which would not have been possible without the scheme’s support.” Charlotte Bennett, Artistic Director, Forward Theatre Project

We continue to offer support and resources to outstanding emerging new writing companies who share Paines Plough’s passion for new plays and touring.

People and governance

“Even some of the trickiest moments were brilliant experience that I know I’ll draw on for years to come. I felt really lucky to be working with Paines Plough and can’t thank any of you enough for giving me such a wonderful opportunity – the best I’ve been given in my career to date – and making me feel such a part of the team.” - Rachel Quinney, Step Change Programme placement

Paines Plough is run by a core team of just five people. Artistic Directors James Grieve and George Perrin, Producer Tara Wilkinson, General Manager Claire Simpson and Administrator Hanna Streeter. We’ve benefitted greatly from Production Manager Bernd Fauler joining us on a fulltime fixed term contract to oversee all our productions, and particularly the Roundabout Season. Bookkeeper Wojtek Trzcinski and Press Representative Kate Morley continue to provide invaluable additional support. We welcomed two extremely talented trainees in Chrissy Jay from the MA Producing Course at Birkbeck College, and Rachel Quinney from the National Theatre as part of the Step Change Programme. Both fulfilled assistant producer roles with distinction. We have been fortunate to have the support of four outstanding administrative interns – Kate Catchesides, Harriet Hutton, Amy Michaels and Sean Linnen. We welcomed two new Board members in Nia Janis and Zarine Kharas, both of whom bring a wealth of skill and experience to the governance of the company. Claire O’Brien stepped down from the Board after a decade of service to Paines Plough.

Tiny Volcanoesby Laurence Wilson

The Great British Bulldog has been usurped by snarling hybrids. The bowler hat has morphed into the hoodie. The culture of polite society is now a culture of blame and hatred as our land of hope and glory is torn into extremes.

Two actors play a cast of thousands in a fast-paced and hilarious inquisition into broken Britain. Strap yourselves in for a full throttle rollercoaster ride through the dilapidated attractions of noble old Blighty, exposing the millions of tiny volcanoes bubbling up through our green and pleasant land. With hymns.

Tiny Volcanoes is a Latitude Festival commission. It was developed with support from the Orchard Project Theatre Residency Programme.

The 8thby Paul Heaton book by Ché Walker

Victim of an overdose or recipient of bulletJust the harvest of the finger or the wristIt’s the needle or the trigger, the 8th could push or pull itAs long as folk believe that he exists

One of the nation’s greatest songwriters Paul Heaton (The Beautiful South, The Housemartins), premieres an epic new pop song, THE 8TH, in a thrilling live show.

Joined onstage by his band and a host of special guests, Heaton transports you to a destitute neighbourhood where the seven deadly sins unfurl. From the seven an eighth is born - a new and thoroughly modern sin that imprisons all who cross its path.

THE 8TH is a musical masterpiece entwined with a theatrical narrative by award-win-ning playwright Ché Walker (The Globe, Royal Court and Young Vic), directed by Paines Plough’s Joint Artistic Director George Perrin.

THE 8TH will feature a cast of performers from across musical genres joining Heaton in the Pavilion Theatre for three very special performances.

THE 8TH was developed, in part, with assistance from the Orchard Project, a program of The Exchange (www.exchangenyc.org).

I’m making a decision. I’m changing things. This is it.

Three old friends. One remarkable day. For Ted, Danny and Charlotte, it’s time to seize control. Make a difference. Change things. This is it.

A day glo trip through the parks and raves and cafes of South London, where life is what you make it. The rapid fire words of Kate Tempest paint a picture of lives less ordinary in an unforgiving world, sound-tracked by an exhilarating score.

One Day When We Were Youngby Nick Payne

I am actually incredibly scared. And not how you might think. I am scared, that once this war is over, and I am sent home, that you won’t be here. That you will have left.

When Leonard and Violet embark on their first night together, they know it also might be their last. It’s 1942 and in a small hotel room in Bath, the couple prepare for Leon-ard’s departure to war, and dream of what the future may bring. As the bombs begin to fall, they know their world won’t ever be the same again.

But the world keeps turning and in the year 2002, the couple must decide what was lost and what was gained.

A new play about the impact of the Second World War on two ordinary lives and a love that spans more than sixty years.

I could fly to New York and back every day for seven years and still not leave a carbon footprint as big as if I have a child. Ten thousand tonnes of CO2. That’s the weight of the Eiffel Tower. I’d be giving birth to the Eiffel Tower.

In a time of global anxiety, terrorism, erratic weather and political unrest, a young couple want a child but are running out of time. If they over think it, they’ll never do it. But if they rush, it could be a disaster.

They want to have a child for the right reasons. Except, what exactly are the right rea-sons? And what will be the first to destruct - the planet or the relationship?

Laughing. Talking. Hours in cafes drinking coffee. Chatting about boys. Girls. Romance. Sharing a plate of chips. It was one of those friendships...I don’t know how to explain...like...Love.

Cabaret singer Foxie O’Hara vanished without a tweet two weeks ago from Mrs Whistle’s Lodge.

On that very same night Foxie’s friend Maggie Brown, a temporary secretary, announced her engagement to local businessman Dougal Cheese.

Concerned and desperate Maggie seeks the help of Dabrowski P.I. to find her missing friend.

But before Dabrowski can blow the whistle on the mystery of Foxie O’Hara he must delve into the history of the girls’ relationship; the deeper he digs, the darker the case becomes, until the real question he needs to answer isn’t ‘where is Foxie’....but ‘who is Foxie’?

Come To Where I’m From

Come To Where I’m From is a theatrical tapestry of the UK, woven by writers asking if home is really where the heart is.

Last year sixty one playwrights from across the UK returned to their home towns to write plays about the places that shaped them. At theatres from Bristol to Belfast, Cardiff to Coventry and Nottingham to Newcastle, these plays were performed by the playwrights themselves, coming home to tell their tale.

You can listen to the plays as free podcasts on our website.

We’re thrilled to be in St Helier for a very special COME TO WHERE I’M FROM featuring five of Jersey’s most exciting voices talking about what island life means to them at The Jersey Opera House.

Financial Review 2011

INCOME

In a year when the company’s ACE RFO grant was cut by 6.5% our reliance on this income actually decreased compared to 2010. Although the funding climate continues to be unstable we are pleased to be seeing a marked increase in the diversity of our income streams. In 2011 production income which includes co-production, box office, and venue fee income contributed to 37% of the total annual income. Donation and grant income for the year increased by7% compared to 2010 with the launch of an individual giving campaign for The Roundabout Auditorium and increased fundraising activity as a whole. Early indications for 2012 show the increase in income from fundraising being set to continue.

EXPENDITURE

The largest amount of expenditure was spent on production running, which is essential for the company as the work we produce is the cornerstone of all of our activities. Production expenditure on the 11 shows that we produced in 2011 was £279,840 which is 106% of the company’s ACE grant for the year. We continue to invest in our playwright development scheme THE BIG ROOM, and in 2011 spent £52,749 on bespoke resources for early and mid-career playwrights. A small team of five permanent employees and around four freelance staff delivered the 2011 programme of activity.

2011 was a great year for Paines Plough alumni...

Over almost 40 years, Paines Plough has worked with some of the nation’s greatest playwrights, directors, actors, and creatives. Here’s what some of our alumni got up to in 2011.

DENNIS KELLY (AFTER THE END – 2008) wrote the book for the multi-award winning smash hit musical MATILDA.

ABI MORGAN (SPLENDOUR - 2000, TINY DYNAMITE - 2001) scripted hit movie THE IRON LADY, for which Meryl Streep scooped the Oscar for Best Actress. Abi also wrote the television adaptation of Sebastian Faulks’ BIRDSONG and the acclaimed original series THE HOUR, which starred fellow Paines Plough alumnus BEN WHISHAW (MERCURY FUR - 2004)

JACK THORNE, a graduate of our Future Perfect Scheme, wrote original television series THE FADES, and co-wrote THIS IS ENGLAND 88 with Shane Meadows. Another Future Perfect graduate.

TOM WELLS, won The Critics Circle Award for Most Promising Playwright for his debut play THE KITCHEN SINK.

MARK RAVENHILL, our former literary manager and writer of PRODUCT and SHOOT, GET TREASURE, REPEAT has been appointed writer-in-residence at The Royal Shakespeare Company.

Hollywood star ANDY SERKIS (BERLIN DAYS, HOLLYWOOD NIGHTS - 1987) starred in two of the year’s biggest movies – LORD OF THE RINGS: THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING and THE RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES.

A partnership forged at Paines Plough is reunited on Broadway as JOHN TIFFANY (Associate Director 1998 - 2006) and playwright ENDA WALSH (THE SMALL THINGS - 2005) collaborate on the hotly anticipated new musical ONCE.

Former Artistic Director ROXANA SILBERT was appointed Artistic Director of Birmingham Repertory Theatre.

PETER CAPALDI (SONGS FOR STRAY CATS AND OTHER LIVING CREATURES - 1985) won Best TV Comedy Actor at the British Comedy Awards.

The Roundabout Season

The Auditorium For the first time in Paines Plough’s 37 year history, we’re building our own theatre. In partnership with Sheffield Theatres, we’re creating the UK’s first small-scale in-the-round touring amphitheatre. We’re calling it TheRoundabout Auditorium. We think theatre-in-the-round is one of the most exhilarating ways to watchtheatre – the original and best 3D experience. As leading British playwrightSimon Stephens says: What I cherish about theatre is that it gives us an insight in to what it is to be a human being – there’s no theatrical architecture that challenges or interrogates what it is to be a human being more than theatre-in-the-round. With only five in-the-round theatres in the UK, most people have never had the chance to see work in this most exciting and intimate of environments. As a new writing touring company our aim is to make the best contemporary plays available to everyone, irrespective of geography, in high quality productions and exciting performance contexts. This is why we came up with the idea of creating The Roundabout Auditorium, and why its ease ofportability is key to its success as a revolutionary concept in touring theatre. It will flat pack into a lorry and pop-up anywhere from the stages of main house theatres, to arts centres and studio theatres, eventually touring to village halls, schools, warehouses and parks in every corner of the UK. From Liverpool to Lyme Regis, Taunton to Trowbridge, Harrogate to Harlow – The Roundabout Auditorium will turn up on the doorsteps of audiences everywhere and ensures everyone has the same extraordinary experience. We hope its legacy will be years of world-beating plays, performed in a unique and electric setting, in top quality Paines Plough productions by a raft of the most exciting UK playwrights. The auditorium is designed by Lucy Osborne, with lighting by Emma Chapman.

The Season To launch the concept Paines Plough and Sheffield Theatres have programmed this inaugural Roundabout Season, which sees three world premières of new plays by Nick Payne, Duncan Macmillan and Penelope Skinner. The last play in the season, by Penelope Skinner, has been specifically commissioned for the acting ensemble. The Roundabout Season opened at the Crucible Studio, Sheffield – as part of the company’s 40th anniversary season – on 5 October 2011. We believe The Roundabout Auditorium will fundamentally transform thenew writing touring landscape in the UK.
