High school enrolled students, 16 years and older, may register for an adult education class for credit after getting approval from their home school and the Adult School office prior to registering or attending. Call our High School program at (650) 967-7919 for more information. Returned Checks If a check is returned to us due to insufficient funds, a $25 fee will be assessed. Continuing in the class will be contingent upon receiving full and valid payment. Refund Policy Please choose classes carefully. Because the fees collected pay teachers’ salaries, we must limit our refund policy. Refunds will only be given if requested at least one week before the first class meeting. No refunds will be given within one week of the first class meeting. For all Career Technical Education classes, a 10% cancellation fee will be assessed for refunds requested at least one week before the first class meeting, and no refunds will be given within one week of the first class meeting. We cannot accept medical, business, travel, or other reasons for not participating in a class. Thank you for your cooperation. If there is not sufficient enrollment by the preregistration deadline, you will receive a refund or your credit card will be credited. If you have preregistered and we have not phoned you three (3) business days prior to the class start date, plan to attend the class(es) you have registered for. If there is sufficient enrollment and the deadline has passed, we may still have a space available for you. Call us at (650) 940-1333 to find out the status of the class(es) you are interested in. To keep costs down, we do not mail out registration confirmations. Citizenship Preparation Class: Get Ready for Your USCIS Interview! Are you planning to apply for U.S. citizenship sometime this year or in the future? Come to our free classes – offered weekly in the evening (Monday) or afternoon (Thursday) – to learn more about the process and prepare for the four parts of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services interview. Study important information about American history, government, culture, and geography for the Civics Test. Practice answering questions from the N-400 application for the Speaking Test. Learn about what you need to do for the Reading and Writing Tests. Twice a year, the instructor invites representa- tives from the USCIS to visit the class to give a presentation/mock interview. Citizenship classes have open enrollment – students may register at any time. Ideally, students will enroll in class at least 3 to 6 months before sending in their application for U.S. citizenship. English level of at least Beginning High is recommended. See pages 16-17 for more information about our English as a Second Language (ESL) and Citizenship program. Director’s Message – Winter/Spring 2019MVLA Adult School is ringing in the new year with an exciting array of career programs, industry partnerships, and technology innovations focused on Educating and Elevating our school, staff, and students. Our new Physical Therapist Aide (PTA) Program was offered for the very first time this fall. PTA is an occupation with a bright outlook and is projected to grow 30% by 2026! Building on this theme of growth and refinement, we are expanding our partnership with

a local technology company by working closely with curriculum developers through our Google Applied Digital Skills Program. As part of our WASC Schoolwide Action Plan aimed at continuous improvement, all teachers are focused on integrating innovative technology and digital materials to enhance instruction and promote even greater student engagement and achievement. Please join us in celebrating the new year by educating and elevating yourself! Whether your goal is academic, personal, or professional, let MVLA Adult School help you in your path towards personal enrichment. We look forward to another great year serving adult learners in our region to achieve academic, personal, and career goals.

North Santa Clara County Student Transition ConsortiumThe MVLA Adult School is a member of the North Santa Clara County Student Transition Consortium (NSCCSTC), a collaboration between the Foothill-De Anza College District (FHDA), Palo Alto Unified School District Adult School (PAUSD), Fremont Union High School District Adult School (FUHSD), and the Mountain View Los Altos High School District Adult School (MVLA). The consortium serves the communities of Cupertino, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Mountain View, Palo Alto, and Sunnyvale, as well as portions of San Jose. Its mission is to coordinate and align programs, create linkages, and develop regional plans to better serve the educational needs of adults in the region.

Medical Assistant Training ProgramNational Certification (NCMA) – Front and Back Office (CCBMA Test Optional)This program prepares students to qualify for entry-level positions in private practices, group practices, urgent care facilities, and hospitals. Medical assistants perform administrative and clinical tasks related to Front and Back Office to keep medical practices running smoothly.

The course combines classroom instruction with a lab practicum component. Online KeyboardingThe world in general and Silicon Valley in particular is unthinkable today without the use of technology. Basic computer skills and a good typing speed are essential to be successful in nearly any career. MVLA Adult School is now offering an online keyboarding program for busy individuals who cannot make time to attend a class. Many jobs require a minimum typing speed of 35-45 wpm and many employers will test this speed before hiring. Practice is the key and through enrolling in our online keyboarding program we give you the opportunity to practice any time and any place. When registering, MVLA Adult School can be selected as your testing site. Tests are held at the Adult School two nights per week. Test fee: $140 for the complete battery of (4) tests or $35 per test. ESL classes from literacy level to advanced level are taught in our program. Classes are held at the Adult School and the Mountain View Senior Center. Students are placed on a space available basis. Some classes are full and students may have to wait for a place in class. Regular attendance in all ESL classes is required to remain in the program.

Online RegistrationThis process is specifically for the collection of demographic data such as: ethnicity, race, native language, education, employment status and goals. The collection of additional contact data such as: address, phone, emergency contact, email, date of birth and gender is also needed. Please contact the MVLA Adult School staff at (650) 940-1333 or come in during office hours for assistance. To enter your demographic data and contact information please go to our website at mvlaae.net and click on the ESL online registration tab, then follow the directions for ESL online registration. Online registration does not ensure a spot for the placement tests or in an ESL class.

ESL Placement TestsTest dates: Wednesdays Jan. 9, Feb. 6, Mar. 6, Apr. 3.

Students who are eligible to attend our ESL classes must take a placement test. Checking in for placement tests is an in-person, first-come first-served process, separate from the online registration. Students should come to the adult school the day of the test at least one hour before the test is scheduled. Space is limited. Priority is given to residents of Mountain View, Los Altos, and Los Altos Hills. Bring photo identification and proof of address to show you live in one of these cities. No childcare is available during testing. Students should have already completed the online registration process by going to our website (mvlaae.net) and following the ESL online registration directions. Be sure to contact the school or come into the office before the placement test date, if you need assistance or have any questions.

We do not guarantee anyone an English class even if you register online or take the placement test. The pre-interview and placement test are given to determine if we have a class at a level that is right for you. If you do not qualify for our core program, you may be interested in enrolling in one of our English Enrichment classes.

NEW! Swedish WeavingSwedish weaving, also known as Huck embroidery, is a form of needlework that is easy to learn and quick to complete. It is done on a large scale on Monk's cloth with yarn using a blunt tapestry needle to produce a delightful pattern. Students will learn step-by-step how to produce a small lap throw. Tai Chi and Qigong, Chen Style – BeginningThis beginning class emphasizes the basic principles and body alignment of Tai Chi and Qigong.
