After emerging into Providence’s independent theater scene with a critically acclaimed production of Edward Albee’sWho’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? in the fall of 2010, The Wilbury Group, under the leadership of founding Artistic Director Josh Short, continued to produce new and established plays, each more challenging than the last. Within two years The Wilbury Group established itself as part of Providence’s fringe theatre scene, attracting thousands of patrons to see productions of classic and new works, some of which were Rhode Island, New England, or World premieres, oftentimes at “non-traditional” venues around the city, including the New England premiere of Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson, the world premiere of Destefano on the Air, Eugene Ionesco’s masterpiece Exit the King, the New England premiere of Rajiv Joseph’s Gruesome Playground Injuries, and a critically acclaimed run of Martin McDonagh’s The Lieutenant of Inishmore. While staying true to a firm commitment to the oft-quoted adage that the play is always the thing, The Wilbury Group also recognizes that, perhaps more than content, a company’s commitment to presenting works at prices affordable to the general public is a key piece of nurturing theatre, as both an accessible art form and a means of entertainment. This commitment is exhibited through our designation of ‘Pay-What-You-Can’ performances for every production, regular discounts for local students and artists, and general admission prices appropriate for the average living wage. With this in mind, and in addition to the employment of local talent whenever possible, The Wilbury Group continues to strive to challenge audiences with productions of thought provoking pieces while being a productive member of our local economy. In January 2013, The Wilbury Group presents the Rhode Island premiere of Kristoffer Diaz’s Obie Award winning play The Elaborate Entrance of Chad Deity.
