The Drugs Are Not for Me convention at Kalahari was held on January 30 2017 and wasan event where hundreds of students from various schools in the Erie County came to listen and learn about drugabuse. The event lasted several hours with much of the information given to the students about how drugs haveaffected people's lives. Many true stories were told throughout the convention and about how teens lives were ruinedand ended from drugs. Several officers from the NARC department came to talk to the students and advised themabout spotting drug use from a person and how to get them help. The officers showed items to the students such assand paper, tin foil, and vent screws to help spot a drug user. Townsend Community School is responsible for fundingand for providing the resources for this event.

The main speaker at the event was Tony Hoffman, a former drug addict. He will have been clean from drugs for 10years on May 17th. He is now a BMX trainer for the Olympics. Tony in his childhood was very good at basketball andBMX but says he was to cocky and thought he was better than everyone else. This attitude lead him to go to partiesand get introduced to marijuana. Tony became a addict and after getting kicked out of school he started getting hookedon more drugs. He was eventually kicked out of his own home. He told the stories of his friends and how they weretragically lost to drugs. After serving two years in prison, he became sober and started coaching BMX for theOlympics and is now continuing his career by bringing awareness to students.

School Activities
Relay for LifeRelay For Life is a team fundraising event where team members take turns walking around a
track or designated path. Each event is 6-24 hours in length and each team is asked to have a
member on the track at all times to signify that cancer never sleeps. Cancer patients don't stop
because they're tired, and for one night, neither do we.
Each team sets up a themed campsite at the event and continues their fundraising efforts by
collecting donations for food, goods, games, and activities. This money will count towards their
overall team fundraising goal.
When you participate in a Relay For Life event, you become a vital part of the American
Cancer Society: a volunteer. You are now part of an organization of 2.5 million survivors,
patients, advocates, volunteers, caregivers, and researchers doing everything within our power
to save lives.

SwimmingOver the weekend we hosted The
Margaretta Invitational in the gym at
the high school. At the meet Jacob
Huber placed first in the heavyweight
category. With this placing at the
invitational Jacob will be seated high in
the ladder for the SBC in Lakota this
Saturday. Also placing in the meet
was Jordan Ayers at 5th place in the
195 weight class, Cameron Suttle at
2nd place in the 120 weight class, and
Kaden Keegan at 5th place in the 138

The records of the wrestlers for the
season prior to the SBC is Jacob
Huber with an amazing record of 32
wins and 4 losses on the season.
Cameron Suttle is currently 15-11,
Kaden Keegan is 13-9, and Jordan
Ayers is 7-13. Jacob Huber and Jordan
Ayers, being the only seniors on the
team, will be departing this year. This
leaves the remaining members, Kaden
Keegan, Richie Reel, Cameron Suttle,
and Jaeger Johnson to take charge
and lead the newcomers from the
Junior High into their High School
Wrestling Career.
The Margaretta boys and girls swim teams
have had a successful year and are looking
forward to seeing it continue in the next
several weeks. The District Swim Meet is
today and there are several of our own
swimmers and divers who will have the
chance to compete at Bowling Green State
University. The boy qualifiers are Josh
Stanley, Noah Esposito, Donovan Draper,
Jake Kromer, Alex Richter, and Spencer
Flick. The girl qualifiers are Lydia Bias,
Bailey Beechler, Miranda Cruz, and Gabby
Mann.
In the boys events, Alex Richter, Jake
Kromer, Josh Stanley, and Donovan Draper
are swimming the 200 medley relay.
Hush, Flick, Esposito, and Draper will
swim the 200 freestyle medley. Draper,
Hush, Kromer, and Stanley are swimming
the 400 freestyle medley. 200 Individual
medleys will be done by Hush and Kromer.
Kromer will also swim the 100 Butterfly,
Hush will swim a 500 freestyle, a 100
backstroke for Richter, and a 100
breaststroke for Stanley.
The girls will have a busy day as well. The
200 medley relay team consists of Lydia
Bias, Bailey Beechler, Miranda Cruz, and
Gabby Mann. Beechler will be swimming a
200 and 500 Freestyle. Also, Bias will be
swimming a 100 Backstroke. Three divers
will also make the trip and they are Lexi

Stimmel. Good luck to the District qualifiers!
The girls’ and boys’ basketball teams have
had a competitive season this year. The
Girl’s Varsity Basketball team has an overall
record of 11-9, currently 5-5 in conference
play. Margaretta girls played Clyde, who is
leading the S.B.C., on February 11th. They
battled and were up for most of the game.
At the very end of the game, Clyde turned it
around, and got the win. The final score was
53- 51. Smetzer had 11 points and Jayden
Moore and Grace Bias added nine apiece.
Faythe Smetzer tied the game at 51-51 with
only seconds remaining. Some other scorers
were Alex Michel with 7, Alex Kessler with
5, Tori Miller with 2, Kennedi Hilton with 6,
and Rebekka Wobser added 2. The girls will
be playing their tournament game as the #3
seed against Galion the #13 seed at Willard
High School on Wednesday, February 22.
The bleachers were packed on Friday
February 10 in honor of Hall of Fame night
and for the last home boys’ basketball game
of the season. What a night to be in the
gym. The J.V. team won in dramatic fashion
which pumped up the entire crowd as they
welcomed the Varsity team onto the floor
for warmups. The boys came out swinging
and had a demanding lead for most of the
game. Oak Harbor, Coach Keller’s alma
mater, has a good team though and came
back with some energy to make the game a
bit closer than the Polar Bears would have
liked. The final score was 61-56 with
Margaretta hanging on for the win. This
improved the boys to a 5-4 S.B.C record
and a 9-8 record overall.

Game On! Seniors vs. Staff game!
The Senior team consisted of some
fabulous athletes such as James Fisher,
Jacob Luma, Simon Kromer, Zach
Rupsic, Brevyn Hedden, Taylor Skeets,
Kaleb Carpenter, Bethany White,
Courtney Wadsworth, Kailey Faulkner,
Michaela Eisenhauer, Michael Davis,
and Brooke Yates. The beginning of the
game started off with the teams battling
for the ball. It was a defensive clinic for
the first few minutes, but finally after a
while the Seniors scored the first
basket. There was no phenomenal
shots this year, like last year’s game
winning half court shot by Mr. Hedden.
However, the end of the game could
have provided a similar excitement.
With the game tied, Mr.Schwan got
fouled on a three point shot at the
buzzer. Unfortunately, after he
connected with the first free throw, the
pressure was too great and he missed
the next one, ending the game. Some
give credit to referee and principal Mr.
Smith for making the game so close.
Students believe that he gave teachers
many chances to get some easy points,
when some were not necessarily
obvious. For example, after a timeout,
the teachers mysteriously got the ball
out of bounds when the seniors should
have had the ball. The students in the
crowd were outraged and yelling the
correction to Mr. Smith. When the day
was done, both teams enjoyed a hard
fought game and managed to keep the
real reason in mind; to entertain the
student body and to have fun. The
entire school shared a special moment
when everyone sang happy birthday to
Mrs. Ransom. The word on the street is
that the staff team has already begun
practicing for next years match up.
full of students, the band started
playing and the cheerleaders started
cheering. Then, when everyone was
settled and sat down, the band stopped
playing and the cheerleaders stopped
cheering for a moment to let Leadership
promote their events for Relay for Life.
After that, both teams were warmed up
and the game began. The staff team
was stacked with teachers from every
building, administrators, and kitchen
workers: Mr. Wise, Mrs. Kline, Mrs.
Yaussy, Mr. Hoffman, Ms. Frank, Mr.
Weyer, Mr. Simonton, Mr. Mock, Mrs.
Depinet, Mrs. Berg, Mr. Schwan, Mr.
Hedden, Mrs. Tucker, Mr. Barrett, Mrs.
Dreschel, Ms. Cullen, Mrs. Ransom, and
Mrs.Yetter.
The Pep Rally on Friday, January 27
was unlike any other; the students beat
the staff in a head to head matchup on
the hardwood. Before the game in
which the entire student body came to
watch, the cheerleaders practiced and
BCSN interviewed some of the staff’s
key players: Mr. Mock, Mr. Barrett, and
Mr. Hedden (who sunk a game winning
half court shot last year). Kids who
were not participating in the game were
getting some shots in before everyone
else started to show up.The teachers
entered the gym one by one, just like
the seniors. Once the bleachers were

SpotlightWhat did you know about
Valentines day?
Caption highlighting key points about picture and potential story following.
DID YOU KNOW?Did you know that nearly 150 million cards are exchanged each Valentine’s Day?
Or that more than 40,000 American are employed at chocolate companies.
For some people that's not good enoughand do expect more. How do peopleplan the the perfect Valentines day. They prepare at work. Most of whatthey do happens before they leave for along weekend so that they arepsychologically free to relax and enjoyit. They set technology guidelines.Successful people set email and phonerules for themselves and the peoplethey want to celebrate with. Theyprepare all the little things first.Candles, romantic music. There are a whole bunch of genericgifts out there. People can use standardValentine’s Day gifts like heart-shapeditems, teddy bears, flowers andchocolate as part of gift basket, but besure to include something related to theactivities, ideals and concepts yourperson you're spending this holidayloves.Dressing to impresses, point is veryimportant point in some peoples minds.Whether you are a young couple juststarting out your relationship or matureadults who have gone through the goodand the bad and stuck by each other foryears, being presentable is a major partof showing that you care about anotherperson.Valentines can either be taken seriouslyor not taken seriously at all. Most ofthe time if you dislike this holiday youdon't have that someone to spend itwith. Every year the holiday doescome. It your mind set on how youwould like to spend this day filled oflove.
A lot of people have that "Specialsomeone" to spend there valentines daywith. Do you ever wonder what aresome popular things people do for theirValentine? Many people although wedo not notice, go all out for theirperson. The "go to" gifts are usually aheart shaped box full of chocolates, teddy bears, and of course flowers. But
Have you ever wonder wereValentine's day came from? Whatmost people might not know, is thatValentine's Day has been around forquite some time. The origin of thisholiday for the expression of lovereally isn't romantic at all, at least notin the traditional sense. The catholicchurch recognizes at least threedifferent saints names. Valentine, orValentinus. There are many differenttheories that people believe aroundthe world. Which one will youbelieve? One of those legends says thatValentine who served during the thirdcentury Rome. Which whoValentine's day is named after.Emperor Claudius the second issuedthat men without wives and familiescreated a better soldier, rather than aman with a family and wife. Heoutlawed marriage for young men.Valentine, was in dismay. He lawdagainst claudius and continued tobelieve that young men can and willmarry. When Claudius realized thatValentine was against him, he orderedhim to death. Valentine waseventually caught, imprisoned andtortured for performing marriageceremonies against command ofEmperor Claudius the second. In theyear 269 AD, Valentine wassentenced to a three part execution ofa beating, stoning, and finallydecapitation all because of his standfor Christian marriage. There arelegends surrounding Valentine'sactions while in prison.
So what is the reasoning behindValentine's Day then? SinceValentine risked his life for love. TheRoomen chose to honor his heroicjester. There are many theories toValentine's death. Although thetheories may not , seem realistic, people believe that these theoriescame from somewhere. Anothertheory starts with Valentine, a youngteenager who was tragically killedwhile trying to helps christians escapeharsh roman prisons where they wereoften beaten and tortured. The idea ofencouraging them to marry within theChristian church was what Valentinewas about.According to the legend, Valentinesent a Valentine to a young girl thathe fell in love with but couldn't bewith. He didn’t care the risks, andwanted to not only prove a point, butalso show his affection in any wouldher could. Possibly his jailorsdaughter, who visited him during hisconfinement. After he died, it is said
