TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Last week’s Treasure mentioned the “Nuns of the Battlefield,” religious sisters from several communities who served as nurses in the Civil War. Florence Nightingale had only instituted female nurses a decade before in the Crimean War, so the idea of women tending to wounded soldiers was extraordinary. The medical and sanitary conditions on the battlefields were appalling, and the sisters were nearly all teachers. Few had any medical training beyond what they had learned as youngsters in the family. Anti-Catholic prejudice was so deeply entrenched in America that sisters could not wear their habits in public. These sisters were the first, and people on both the Union and Confederate sides soon began to marvel at their bravery, efficiency, and respect for Protestant soldiers. More than six hundred sisters from twenty-one communities went to war, serving in wretched conditions. They were tough and single-minded, efficient and fearless. After the war, sisters could appear in public everywhere in the reunited nation, and often received the praise and gratitude of grateful soldiers and family members on behalf of their sister nurses. An outdoor monument to the “Nuns of the Battlefield” stands in Washington at M Street and Rhode Island Avenue. The inscription reads: “They comforted the dying, nursed the wounded, carried hope to the imprisoned, gave in His name a drink of water to the thirsty.” —Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

From the StewardSHIP Desk
A Note for our Ministry Leaders The Stewardship Office would like to help you find volunteers for specific tasks or projects that your church or parish team or committee may be working on. Are you in need of bakers? Or envelope stuffers? Or someone to make phone calls? Sometimes when we provide a very specific need or detailed explanation of the type of help needed, it may make someone realize that they are able to help with that need, rather than the usual vague “volunteers needed” request. We’ll use this column in the bulletin to help recruit new people for the many different tasks that are involved in all of the stewardship that happens within our parish. Please contact Kathleen in the Parish Office at 304-242-1560 Ext. 9 or [email protected] to have your list of volunteer needs added to this area of the bulletin. A Note for Parishioners Are you looking for new ways to serve God, our community and our parish? There are dozens of ways to get involved. Watch this column to learn where we need additional volunteers. Or, if you’re eager to get started right away, call Kathleen in the Parish Office at 242.1560, or email [email protected]. Why should we get involved? St. Matthew’s Gospel gave us these words of Jesus: “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.”
Holy Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and to
you, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who wander through the world seeking the ruin of souls.
Amen.

Sponsor a Student!
The upcoming 2018-2019 school year finds several school families in need of tuition assistance. We are asking those parishioners who are willing and financially able, to consider sponsoring a child for the upcoming school year. Tuition for one child is $3490; for two children $6300; and for three or more children $8515. If you able to provide assistance or have questions regarding this program, please call Shandi Nodurft for further information at 304.242.3966. If your child has benefited from a quality Catholic education at St. Michael Parish School, perhaps you would consider offering that gift to another child. Many families are struggling in our present economy and could truly use some help. Thank you for your consideration!

Pro Life Corner 16-year-old boy with cancer uses his Make a Wish to ask for an end to abortion “…In March, [Jeremiah Thomas] the all-star, state champion athlete was diagnosed with osteoblastic osteosarcoma, a bone cancer that is resistant to radiation therapy and has a survival rate of just 10 percent. With a tumor dangerously close to his heart and two on his spine, his doctors told his parents that it was too late. He was paralyzed from the waist down from the tumor on his spine but it didn’t hold him back. ‘I can still preach from a wheelchair,’ he said… Despite all of the struggles he went through with cancer, it was still his greatest desire to see an end to abortion… …When he was approved for Make a Wish, Jeremiah spoke with staff about a legacy wish, meaning his potentially last wish in this life wasn’t one that would ultimately benefit him but could save countless lives. He asked for a phone call with Texas Governor Greg Abbott. His call was videotaped and shared on social media. He told Governor Abbott about his pro-life outreach and about his wish to completely abolish abortion in the state of Texas… ‘Your wish,” [Governor Abbot] told Jeremiah, ‘is on the Republican party platform position and that’s what we’re going to be pursuing this next legislative session and that is to outlaw abortion altogether in the state of Texas. And so your wish is granted’…In an amazing act of compassion, Jeremiah Thomas used his one wish to help end the greatest human rights injustice of his time: abortion. And for that, his impact on the world will live on long after he is gone…” Important Contact Numbers Pregnant and Need Help?
