Principal’s Message Dear Students, Parents and Guardians; With the provincial announcement to transition to online for students in grades 7-12, we are very grateful for our parents, students and teachers in a seamless transition for the continuity of educa-tion for all of our Louis students. Although we are navigating adjustments during this pandemic, it is very clear that we can do anything together. We are passionate in working together to ensure that quality education continues. Students are still in school while at home and they must follow their schedules. They are in class with face to face instruction via technology. So far, this learning stance will continue until January 9th. For mental health and continuity in learning the following are important:

    • Morning routines should be getting up, getting dressed, going for a quick walk, eating a healthy breakfast, and setting up their learning station at a table or desk free of distractions.

    • It is really important that students are gaining solid understandings of their learner outcomes and increasing their competencies and skills in the weeks ahead. This is critical for any future course transitions, as well as, their post-secondary goals.

    • Students are expected to ‘join’ their classes on time, and be engaged and productive throughout their scheduled class time.

It is important that our students have the technology they need to support continued learning while they are at home. Phones are not adequate devices for learning. Students need access all day to a desktop, laptop or Chromebook equipped with both a camera, microphone, and audio. With the form we sent out to the community to indicate whether our students needed help with a device, we have given out to date 140 Chromebooks and 7 desktops from Computers for Schools with cameras and mics. During this pandemic, we truly all have to do our part in following the protocols to make a difference in lowering the surge in cases because every human life is sacred. We are so grateful for our health care workers, doctors, and nurses who are working tirelessly as hospital capacities are reaching their limit. As a Louis family, we care for each other. This pandemic has affected jobs, businesses and many fami-lies financially. As a family, we are so grateful for the many generous contributions either monetary or in non-perishable items for the Christmas Hampers. Not in anyone’s control is the pandemic and the struggles we are facing so please reach out confidentially to [email protected] if your family would benefit from a hamper so the Louis family can continue to be there for each other. Our junior high and senior high students’ union have organized activities for the upcoming couple of weeks. We look forward to participating in the enjoyment of these events. December 2020 Dear Parents/Guardians of the LSL community, After our Remembrance Day Celebration, we kicked off our largest social justice undertaking of the year, Christmas Hampers. Louis St. Laurent School has a long-standing tradition of excellence and generosity when it comes to supporting LSL families in need. With the world in a global pandemic, our need is greater than ever, we are reaching out to ask for your support in supporting our Christmas Hamper Initiative. Students within the school collected non-perishable food items. We also have a way for families to donate money, as no physical cash is being collected this year. Through your PowerSchool account, donations can be made right to the LSL Christmas Hampers. Money collected will be used to purchase grocery gift cards for the families as this year as due to COVID, we are restricted in what can be collected. We do not want families missing out on fresh produce, and so this is the best way to ensure we can support them during these times. Tax receipts will be issued for donations over $25.00. We realize current economic times are tight, but if able, we would appreciate any help to support those in our school community this Christmas season. May God bless you in your generosity. With thanks, LSL Christmas Hamper Committee Angela Costanzo Lori Arksey Luke Fischer Albert Felicitas

Due to the ever-changing times of COVID 19, the business office will no longer be accepting cash, or in-person debit/credit payments for the following.

Bus Passes All bus passes are to be purchased through parent PowerSchool account only. Once purchase has been made, a bus pass will be issued and student will be called to the business office to pick up. Students are no longer able to visit the business office dur-ing the school day to purchase a bus pass.

School Fees and Purchases All school fees and purchases are to be paid through parent PowerSchool only. Students and parents are not able to visit the business office to make these purchases.

On-line Learners All on-line learners must contact the business office to set up a time during after-school hours to pick up bus passes, textbooks and any purchased items.

Student ID’s Student ID’s must be presented when picking up bus passes or borrowing of textbooks and library books. It is essential for this to ensure the correct individual is receiving these items. If necessary, students may keep a picture of their school ID on their phone. Another suggestion might be, keep their student ID inside their phone case.

PowerSchool (parent account) If you have not set up a parent PowerSchool account, please contact the office and they will assist you in setting one up.

If you have any questions regarding the account information of your child(ren), please do not hesitate to email our Busi-ness Manager, Mr. Burt Schoepp at [email protected] or Mrs. Nancy Trabysh at [email protected] .

O Come, O Come Emmanuel! Happy New Year! November 29, 2020 marked the beginning of a new Church year. We are entering the second cycle (Year B) of a three-year cycle of the Catholic church calendar (Year A, B, and C). This season is called Advent. As we eagerly anticipate the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ, we, the Catholic community of Louis St. Laurent will be cel-ebrating our Advent Eucharistic liturgy on Thursday, December 17 at 12:10 pm (Senior high block 2, Junior high block 4). The liturgy will be live streamed. You are invited to remotely attend this beautiful banquet. We are happy to welcome Fr. Glenn to celebrate the Holy Eucharist with us. Our amazing Fine Arts department and their students will be hosting this banquet. Live stream link will be forthcoming. Happy New Year!!!

    From the chaplains.

The Instrumental Music program at Louis St. Laurent is finding new ways to thrive and express our creativity. We are thankful for all of the support that the staff, students, and parents have given us these past few months as we discover our love for music under a new reality. We encourage you to support your child in their study of music at home by helping them find the space and time in your home to be able to practice and learn music. We have given them all of the tools to be successful- every child has their own instrument, supplies, and subscriptions to online services such as Smart Music so that they can continue their learning. We are excited to present what we have been working on in new and innovated ways. Stay tuned to the school Instagram and your email accounts to find out what our students have been up to.

It is an exciting time – Grade 7 students are learning new instruments for the first time. You may be hearing some interesting sounds in your house this year- don’t worry, it is all part of the process. Grade 8 and 9 students are building on the strong foundation from last year and are expanding their playing ability on their instruments learning new melodies and participating in new small ensembles. Your children have been preparing some Christmas tunes for your family and friends to enjoy. As part of an MYP/IB project, students 7-9 will be recording Christmas solos, quartets, and small mixed ensembles for your listening pleasure. Please watch your email inbox that last week before Christmas for links to some Christmas cheer from our young band students.

Since we began in November, we have hit the ground running creating and performing music- even if we cannot do it in person. Students have a subscription to Smart Music online, where they complete their performance as-signments. Using this software, we will be recording an ensemble performance of Christmas tunes for you to en-joy. Expect to hear from students grades 10-12 in the Concert Band, and students grades 11-12 in the LSL Jazz Band. Links will be distributed last week of school before Christmas via the school Instagram and Website. Students have also used this opportunity to use their music skills in new ways. We have been exploring the com-position, technology, and theoretical components of the curriculum by using a digital audio workstation called ‘Soundtrap.’ Students have been collaborating and creating their own songs and exploring new ways of express-ing themselves. They are recording, sampling, manipulating, and synthesizing new music for your enjoyment. Please watch the school Instagram and Website the last week of school before Christmas for details on how to listen to our work.
