Security tipS

Stay safe on public Wi-Fi

A notebook, tablet or smartphone’s default settings and firewalls may not be enough to keep it safe from prying eyes while on the go. If you want to keep your informa-tion and files secure, read these essential tips for protecting yourself when you’re away from home.

n Get a virtual private network: VPN routes your traffic through a secure network even on public Wi-Fi.

n Avoid automatically connect-ing to Wi-Fi hotspots: a smartphone or tablet may be set to automatical-ly connect to any available Wi-Fi hotspot, a setting that can seriously endanger privacy.

n Use secure connections: If possible, use a “https://” site to encrypt the transfer data.

n Use two-factor authentication: You need two pieces of informa-tion to log into an account: One is something you know and the other is something you have.

n Confirm the network name: For example, the Starbucks public Wi-Fi network might not be named “Free Starbucks Wi-Fi.” Connect-ing to a fake network could put your device into the hands of a malicious attacker.

Take control of cybersecurity Taking control of your own cybersecurity begins with

understanding one simple fact: that the Internet can be a hazard-ous place.

Whether you’re banking, connecting with friends, working, or just passing the time, when you’re online you are never alone. Just as you’d watch your back, your family, and your belongings in a busy public place, you need to be equally cautious online.

password protect every deviceMany of us switch back and forth between devices: from

computers and cell phones to tablets and laptops. These devices store emails, online account logins, schedules, and other sensitive personal and professional information. Making sure your computer or device is password-protected is one of the most effective ways of keeping your device secure from cyber criminals who might try to log in and access your files and data.

creating and using passwordsn Make sure your password has at least eight characters and

does not spell a single dictionary word.n Use a combination of upper and lower case letters, at least one

number, and a character that isn’t a letter or number.n Commit your password to memory, rather than keeping it

written down or saved on your devices.n Use different passwords for different accounts, rather than

one “master” password.n Avoid using automatic login features that save your username

and password.n Change your password often.

sharing your locationn Be careful sharing your location, work schedule, or vacation

details. These tell people when your home is empty, and where you can be found.

n Be extra careful about giving out your Social Security number.n Remember that phone numbers and email addresses posted

online are often collected by spammers and scammers.n Never share information that provides clues to your

passwords (pets’ names, mother’s maiden name, etc.).

clicking shared linksn Do not reply to, or click on links in any email that looks

suspicious.n Always be wary of emails from financial institutions, Internet

service providers and other organizations asking you to provide personal information online. If in doubt, call the company directly.

n Remember that links apparently shared by friends can be malicious, especially if their accounts have been compromised.

practice saFe social networkingSocial networking sites like Facebook and Twitter are a great

way to stay in touch with family, reconnect with friends, share news and photos and broadcast what’s on your mind. They’re also a great way for cyber criminals to find out information about you. After all, most people provide a lot of personal details like where they work, who they’re related to, when they’re on vacation, their address and so on without giving it much thought – making it easy for just about anyone to learn what they want to know about you.

Check out the privacy and security settings of your social network and use them to control who sees what.

Never include your phone numbers, email address, home address, work details, your child’s school or any other personal information on your profile page.

keep security soFtware updatedIn a study, 59 percent of respondents saw a jump in malware

infections due to unsecure mobile devices.Today’s malware and viruses are serious threats that can

destroy your computer, steal your identity and infect your entire digital network of friends, family and associates.

Wherever we are and however we access the digital world, every step we take to be safer will make ourselves, our families and our communities more secure. In our digital lives we may face any number of issues, from preventing or responding to cybercrime, cyberbullying and scams to teaching children to use the Internet safely, more securely and responsibly.

Protecting yourself can be easy when you make cyber safety a priority and become aware of the most common threats and risks to your online security. Stay informed. Cyber risks and threats are constantly evolving.

Exercising best practices for utilizing mobile devices and social media, encourages us all to become better digital citizens in our communities.

SIGNIFICANT ACTION Leilani singlehandedly runs the standardization and evaluation shop and ensures enforcement standards in preparation for the Air Mobility Command Unit Effectiveness Inspection in December. She has also planned and executed the Theater Airlift Phase, where she coordinated five C-130s and their maintenance packages, billeting in Colorado for 75 members and operations training schedule. Her actions ensured 11 C-130 weapons officer students graduated. Finally, Leilani is active in her local church, serving as Sunday school teacher, providing leadership and mentorship to 300 children on a weekly basis.

The U.S. War Department approved the 19th Bombardment Group’s emblem design on Oct. 19, 1936. The original design with a winged sword and Great Square of Pegasus has remained nearly unchanged in the 19th Wing’s lineage during the last 78 years. Emblems are an organization’s visible symbol developed to promote esprit de corps, morale and a sense of heritage. Each unit is authorized its own unique emblem design. The 19th BG’s emblem symbolizes the projection of air power during continuous operations. The Latin motto “In Alis Vincimus” translates to “On wings we conquer.” The 19th Airlift Wing continues under this motto at Little Rock Air Force Base. The 19th Bombardment Group was activated in 1932 and serves as the foundational unit to the 19th Airlift Wing.

Col. Christopher Bennett, 19th Airlift Wing vice commander; Col. Charles Brown Jr., 19th Airlift Wing commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Rhonda Buening, 19th Airlift Wing command chief, fill out their Combined Federal Campaign cards Oct. 9 at Little Rock Air Force Base.

Team Little Rock’s Combined Federal Campaign is underway and continues until Dec. 9. This year’s goal is $163,500.

According to OPM.gov, the mission of the CFC is to promote and support philanthropy through a program that is employee focused, cost-efficient, and effective in providing all federal employees the opportunity to improve the quality of life for all.

Officials are encouraging use of MyPay for donations to decrease environmental impact and personally identifiable information loss. Reservists in the 913th Air Group will continue using paper forms due to payroll deduction inability.

According to the OPM, the CFC is the world’s largest and most successful annual workplace charity campaign, raising millions of dollars each year.

Depending on who you ask, some may say there is nothing to do at Little Rock Air Force Base. Ask Nathan Koppersmith though, and you may be surprised at just how much there is available. He’s Outdoor Recreation’s new Outdoor Adventure program coordinator, and the list of events and activities he’s planning is extensive for both on-base and off-base adventure.

Under his direction, there are two zombie hunts available Friday and Nov. 6, trips to a trampoline park and a Christmas tree farm in the works, as well as day hikes, kayak trips and more. To celebrate the cooler weather, there will be a Family Fun Night Oct. 30 behind Outdoor Recreation’s building 656 on 6th Street that will be reminiscent of fall festivals.

“We’ll have bouncy houses, hay rides, free hamburgers and hot dogs, apple cider and hot cocoa, and do our best to get candy for the kids as well,”

Koppersmith said. “It’s a free event all around.

“There’s a trampoline park in downtown Little Rock; you can go there and jump on trampolines, play dodgeball, basketball, jump in the foam pit, do flips – all kinds of crazy stuff,” he added. “Adults can bring their kids and have all kinds of fun.”

Planning these trips since he first reported on the job in August, Koppersmith’s goal is to get people out of the dorms and off the base to see the sights and activities of the Natural State.

“We got some good feedback from the surveys we sent out recently,” he said, “And we are trying to revamp things now. We are trying to find as many new things as we can and jam pack them into our schedule. Our goal is to have two trips a month, but in the spring or summer we might have more than that.

“We are doing a day hike to Mount Magazine Nov. 14; then we are doing a

trip to a Christmas tree farm Nov. 28,” he added. “There’s a petting zoo and train rides for the kids, so your whole family can go. We will actually bring your tree back to base on a trailer, then you can take it home from there.”

In January he’s planning a geocaching – treasure hunting with a GPS – trip; in February he is coordi-nating a “Breakout and Escape” event where participants are locked in a room with a set of clues to help them get out before the time’s up.

Some other highlights of what’s to come include the Warrior Dash, a 5k Mud Run in the summer; a guided fishing trip; and a two-day hog hunt when it’s warmer outside.

Anyone with suggestions for trips or activities can post them on Outdoor Recreation’s Facebook page, https://w w w.facebook.com/19FSSODR. Koppersmith suggested participants give them likes and comments on Outdoor Recreation activities they’ve done and would like to do again.

Most bowlers step up to the line for the first roll of the game hoping it will be their first “perfect game.”

That was not the case when U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Anthony Szeluga, a loadmaster assigned to the 50th Airlift Squadron loadmaster, shocked the crowd of bowling enthusiasts during a tourna-ment on Oct. 8, 2015, when he bowled a perfect 300. Szeluga was thinking it might be number eight. And, it was.

The final score for the 4-person team was 821, and it was enough for the 50th AS team to take first place in the Session 1 Bowling Tournament.

Asked if he ever considered becoming a professional bowler, Szeluga responded, “I thought about it when I was a kid. However, after I grew up I knew I wasn’t good enough to be a professional.”

The 50th AS team consisted of Szeluga, Senior Airmen Steven Bargmann and Tiffany Raimes, 50th AS crew chief and loadmaster and Cory Wright, 61st AS loadmaster.

Bowling for 22 years, Szeluga’s father started coaching him at the age five and

supported by taking him bowling on weekends.

”I have traveled throughout the United States going to youth tournaments and was lucky enough to receive a bowling scholar-ship to Martin Methodist College, where I was part of the bowling team and earned my bachelor’s degree in history,” Szeluga said.

Passionate about being a loadmaster, Szeluga has no plans of becoming an Air Force officer, even though he has a college degree.

While Szeluga loves what he does, work can still be stressful. CareerCast.com lists “Enlisted Military Personnel” as the #2 of “Most Stressful Jobs of 2015.” A “Military General” is #3. For Szeluga, bowling is stress relief, most of the time.

“Bowling can be either relaxing and enjoyable, or frustrating and unbearable,” Szeluga said. “It all depends on the serious-ness of the person. I do not take bowling lightly. For me, the hardest part is the science behind the game; knowing all the little things to adjust to put yourself in a better scoring situation.”

His knowledge and experience of the game are not taken for granted; Szeluga passes the lessons of his father on to others.

“When tournaments approach through-out the year, my key for success is to practice and to have fun,” Szeluga said. “After all, it is just a game. I learned a lot in my youth and today I teach others so they too might have a chance to have some of the opportu-nities that I did.”

The Army and Air Force Exchange Service is making it easier for service members and their families to tighten their waistlines while dining or grabbing a snack on the installation.

The Main Exchange food court and Express locations are stocked with healthy options for smart choices on the go.

“In addition to exercise, proper nutrition plays a major role in maintaining fitness,” AAFES General Manager Al Fuentes said. “The exchange is doing its part to make sure Airmen are mission-ready in body, mind and spirit.”

Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen offers a live-well menu with more than 20 items with less than 350 calories. The blackened chicken entrée salad is exclusive to the Exchange at only 300 calories, while a chicken and sausage jambalaya is just 220 calories.

When dining at the Exchange’s Charley’s Grilled Subs location, military shoppers will find a variety of items with 150 calories or less, including grilled chicken, steak and garden

salads. Charley uses 100 percent choice steak, 100 percent all-white meat chicken breast and fresh deli meats.

Subway is also taking wellness to heart by offering a Heart Healthy menu that includes meals less than 700 calories with 30 percent or less calories from fat. Subway is the first restau-rant to receive the American Heart association Heart Check.

For customers who need to grab a quick bite, Expresses offer good-for-you choices for on-the-go snacking and light meals. Snack Avenue is a special area inside Express stores specifically geared to customers looking for a quick healthy meal or snack. Expresses recently added several new items to Snack Avenue including bottled smoothies, juices and hard-boiled eggs.

“Good dietary habits greatly enhance our service member’s ability to perform at their maximum potential” Fuentes said. “It’s about making good choice and the exchange is provid-ing customers those choices.”

AAFES offers healthy food alternativesAnyone considering signing up for Air Force Club membership

may be even more tempted this fall because now through Nov. 18, everyone who joins receives a $15 to $25 Best Buy e-gift card.

Additionally, all those who sign up before the deadline will be automatically entered into a drawing for a $1,000 Best Buy e-gift card or could win one of five $500 Best Buy e-gift cards.

Jerry Edwards, the 19th Force Support Squadron Food and Beverage manager, believes the Little Rock AFB Club goes above and beyond for their club members and said the member perks include:

Free steak dinner night every first Friday;Membership Appreciation Dinner every third Wednesday;Additional dollar off discounts for lunch buffets; and, coming

soon, A Membership Breakfast the last Wednesday of the month.Air Force Club Membership is the gateway to on-base food, fun,

socialization and entertainment. It also provides financial rewards through the membership credit card and special club programs like Frenzy, where people get to see Ultimate Fighting Champion-ship events free and win tickets to National Football League games. There’s also a scholarship program that rewards $25,000 in college scholarships annually.
