Board members Kevin Matejcek, Trent Matejcek, Lisa Schindele and Jason Sorlien present. Audience: None Chairman Huso gave an update on Superintendent Baesler meeting discussing the re-start plans as moving documents, policing students who should be quarantined, second wave of CARE Act funding and coloring is determined by the governor and is by state, not district by district. A motion by Lisa Schindele, seconded by Trent Matejcek, to approve the 2020-21 E-Distance Learning Plan as presented. The motion carried unanimously. Mr. Baumgarn reviewed the process for entering games and that each athlete listed on the roster (9-12) will be allowed 2 tickets to purchase for each home game. If the event is held indoors the fans are to wear masks and social distance. Mr. Baumgarn reviewed the supplies that have been ordered and that some of the supplies are backordered and have had some difficulty with the salesman from Heartland. He will continue to keep in communication with Heartland to get our products here as soon as possible. Board members Jason Sorlien, Lisa Schindele, Kevin Matejcek and Trent Matejcek were present. A motion by Kevin Matejcek, seconded by Lisa Schindele, to approve the August 12 regular meeting as presented. The motion carried unanimously. August 19 special meeting minutes: Tabled. Audience: Alyson Parsley, Beau Snyder, Randii Reed, Kristie Matejcek, Preston Sundeen, Angela Herda, Ben Scallon. A motion by Jason Sorlien, seconded by Trent Matejcek, to approve the financial reports as presented. The motion carried unanimously. Mr. Snyder, high school principal, reported the high school enrollment currently is 67, COVID-19 restart plan, distance learning plan, staff in-service, Bayer Grant award, first day of school, MIS03 workshop, Region 3 principal meeting, IEP/ 504 meetings, NWEA testing, and teacher walkthrough feedback in each classroom. Mrs. Parsley, elementary principal, reported current elementary enrollment is 93, fresh fruit and vegetable grant approved, 7Mindset, Title I, professional development, Raider Pack Food Assistance program, IEP/504/ILP meetings and NWEA testing completed. Mrs. Reed, counselor, reported on building relationships with students and continuing to implement bi- weekly lessons in elementary using Seven Mindsets curriculum, and I am Resilient program for the high school students. Coordinating with the administration and teachers for students to receive the most from her and the programs. Classroom lessons and individual counseling is also being held. Ms. Fisk, technology coordinator, reported that 26 iPads for elementary, 23 Chromebooks for high school and 28 laptops for checkout have been prepared for students. Five additional iPads have been prepared for high school teacher recording. Ms. Fisk has set up a Go Math app for elementary and continues to update and fix computers along with website updates as needed. Mr. Baumgarn, superintendent, reported on school bus inspections, NDSHSAA athletic director meeting, NFHS camera install on September 16 and 17, NE superintendent meeting along with the updates on the boiler, elementary bathroom and boys locker room. The summer school lunch program has been extended for free meals to all students until December 2020. Old and Unfinished Business -- A motion by Lisa Schindele, seconded by Jason Sorlien, to approve the Certificate of Compliance as presented. The motion carried unanimously. New Business -- Preston Sundeen approached the school board members regarding the attendance policy for junior high/junior varsity football games and informed the board of a discussion that he had with a board member regarding his wife’s presence away from the football field with his daughters and a few daycare children. Chairman Huso went over the chain of command with a patron complaint. Chairman Huso thanked Mr. Sundeen for bringing his concerns to the attention of the board. A motion by Kevin Matejcek, seconded by Trent Matejcek, to approve the 2020-21 Consolidated Title I application as presented. The motion carried unanimously. A motion by Lisa Schindele, seconded by Jason Sorlien, to approve the tuition waivers for Aubrie and Burkley Kraft. The motion carried unanimously. The next meeting date will be held on Oct. 7, 2020 at 7 p.m. in the SERC room of the Lakota High School. Tessa Varnson Business Manager Mark Huso Board Chairman MINUTES OF SPECIAL MEETING LAKOTA SCHOOL BOARD September 25, 2020 Chairman Huso called the meeting to order at 8 a.m. with (2) agenda items: FFCRA/EFMLA; custodial position. Board members Kevin Matejcek, Trent Matejcek, Lisa Schindele and Jason Sorlien present. A motion by Kevin Matejcek, seconded by Trent Matejcek, to waive the 24-hour notice for meeting. The motion carried unanimously. Chad Berger discussed the different options to move forward with the athletics when players come out of quarantine. The board members shared their concerns with moving forward with athletics with all the current COVID cases. The board asked Mr. Baumgarn and Mr. Slade to set up a joint board meeting on October 1 or October 2 between the Lakota School Board and the Dakota Prairie School Board. Mr. Baumgarn reported on the current number of students and staff members that are out due to close contact and those that have tested positive. Majority of the individuals in quarantine are due to close contact. A motion by Lisa Schindele, seconded by Trent Matejcek, to approve closing the school on Monday, Sept. 28 and Tuesday, Sept. 29 because of no administrators in buildings and shortage of staff members currently on quarantine due to COVID-19. There will also be a deep cleaning done of the building from the custodial staff. The motion carried unanimously. Mr. Baumgarn discussed having an early out on Thursday, Sept. 30 at 2 p.m. for teachers to meet and discuss how things are going. The board stated with no school on Monday or Tuesday that they would like to have a Zoom meeting set up for the teachers, one of those days off, to meet versus getting out of school early after the school being closed. Mr. Baumgarn reported the staff is prepared to go distance learning and will get the books and materials out to students immediately. Michelle Fisk discussed the outdated Promethean boards that are currently in the elementary and high school buildings. They are not very compatible to distance learning for students and need updating. A motion by Jason Sorlien, seconded by Trent Matejcek, to approve the FFCRA/EFMLA guidelines and payment form that was presented. The motion carried unanimously. A motion by Kevin Matejcek, seconded by Lisa Schindele, to approve moving Richard Luehring to a full-time custodial position, 8 hours a day, for the remainder of the school year. Dakota Prairie School Board members: David Blasey, Chanda Arneson, Sarah Anderson, Todd Jorde, Penny Lippert. Zoom audience: Jay Slade, Dakota Prairie superintendent; Kevin Baumgarn, Lakota superintendent; Chad Berger, athletic director; and multiple staff and patrons from both districts. Carrie Eidsness, head volleyball coach, and Beau Snyder, head football coach both discussed their opinions/thoughts moving forward with the athletic season and the toll it will take on the students if you took extracurriculars away from them. Tonia Poerhls called upon to give her opinion and stated she was worried about the students’ mental health if you take this away and also the educational side of students not keeping up their grades if they don’t have that extra push. Chad Berger, Dakota Prairie athletic director, discussed two options they could go with as option #1 of moving forward with the season as usual, or option #2 that is for starting on Monday with regular practice schedule and play just region contests with JV and JH having only practices. Chairman Huso asked each board member individually from the Lakota board and the Dakota Prairie board to share any other comments/concerns they had. However, adding kitchen waste and maintaining a com- post pile during the winter can take a lot of motivation, especially when walking outside requires cold weather gear and shoveling snow. In an effort to learn more about composting, I partici- pated in an online composting course. During that course, I learned I could collect kitchen waste during the winter to compost during the summer. The idea takes advantage of our cold temperatures by storing kitchen waste in a garbage bin. Examples of kitchen waste that can be composted are coffee grounds and filters, tea bags, eggshells, and vegetable and fruit trimming and peelings. Do not include meats, fats, dairy products and starches because they can attract flies and rodents when turning the kitchen waste into compost dur- ing the summer. These items need good compost pile man- agement to decompose quickly. Do not include any items that might contain disease organ- isms, such as diseased plants and pet feces. The first step is to collect a supply of browns, such as dead, dry leaves, to layer with your kitchen scraps during the winter. Other examples of browns that would work are sawdust, straw or hay. Keep the browns dry and store them in a place that is easy to get to in the winter. I store my dried leaves in a sturdy plastic garbage bin right next to the backyard garage door. Heavy- duty trash bags also would work to store the browns. Next, you need a container to layer the kitchen scraps with the collected browns. Anything with a cover will work as a con- tainer. Sturdy, flexible garbage bins, five-gallon pails or storage totes are good examples. During the winter, simply add kitchen scraps and top with a layer of the collected browns and repeat. I like garbage bins for stor- ing my kitchen waste during the winter. The garbage bins are fairly easy to move as long as they don’t get too heavy. They can be moved out of the way once the weather gets nicer. I can drill holes in the bottom and sides so I can compost right in the container. Once the weather warms, add the winter composted ma- terials to your existing compost pile or start a new one and mix well. This was my first year of saving kitchen waste through winter, then turning it into compost once summer arrived. I would say it was a success. The kitchen compost was ready to work into my garden this fall. What are you waiting for? Get your bins ready and start collecting leaves. Happy gar- dening! September 30, 2020Chairman Huso called the special

school board meeting to order at 9 p.m. Lakota board members Kevin Matejcek, Trent Matejcek, Lisa Schindele and Jason Sorlien present. Dakota Prairie School Board members: David Blasey, Chanda Arneson, Sarah Anderson, Todd Jorde, Penny Lippert.

Zoom audience: Jay Slade, Dakota Prairie superintendent; Kevin Baumgarn, Lakota superintendent; Chad Berger, athletic director; and multiple staff and patrons from both districts.

Carrie Eidsness, head volleyball coach, and Beau Snyder, head football coach both discussed their opinions/thoughts moving forward with the athletic season and the toll it will take on the students if you took extracurriculars away from them.

Tonia Poerhls called upon to give her opinion and stated she was worried about the students’ mental health if you take this away and also the educational side of students not keeping up their grades if they don’t have that extra push.

Chad Berger, Dakota Prairie athletic director, discussed two options they could go with as option #1 of moving forward with the season as usual, or option #2 that is for starting on Monday with regular practice schedule and play just region contests with JV and JH having only practices.

Chairman Huso asked each board member individually from the Lakota board and the Dakota Prairie board to share any other comments/concerns they had.

Grand Forks CountyComposting is a great way

to recycle waste from the yard and kitchen.

However, adding kitchen waste and maintaining a com-post pile during the winter can take a lot of motivation, especially when walking outside requires cold weather gear and shoveling snow.

In an effort to learn more about composting, I partici-pated in an online composting course. During that course, I learned I could collect kitchen waste during the winter to compost during the summer. The idea takes advantage of our cold temperatures by storing kitchen waste in a garbage bin.

Examples of kitchen waste that can be composted are coffee grounds and filters, tea bags, eggshells, and vegetable and fruit trimming and peelings.

Do not include meats, fats, dairy products and starches because they can attract flies and rodents when turning the kitchen waste into compost dur-ing the summer. These items need good compost pile man-agement to decompose quickly. Do not include any items that might contain disease organ-isms, such as diseased plants and pet feces.

The first step is to collect a supply of browns, such as dead, dry leaves, to layer with your kitchen scraps during the winter. Other examples of browns that

would work are sawdust, straw or hay. Keep the browns dry and store them in a place that is easy to get to in the winter. I store my dried leaves in a sturdy plastic garbage bin right next to the backyard garage door. Heavy-duty trash bags also would work to store the browns.

Next, you need a container to layer the kitchen scraps with the collected browns. Anything with a cover will work as a con-tainer. Sturdy, flexible garbage bins, five-gallon pails or storage totes are good examples. During the winter, simply add kitchen scraps and top with a layer of the collected browns and repeat.

I like garbage bins for stor-ing my kitchen waste during the winter. The garbage bins are fairly easy to move as long as they don’t get too heavy. They can be moved out of the way once the weather gets nicer. I can drill holes in the bottom and sides so I can compost right in the container.

Once the weather warms, add the winter composted ma-terials to your existing compost pile or start a new one and mix well.

This was my first year of saving kitchen waste through winter, then turning it into compost once summer arrived. I would say it was a success. The kitchen compost was ready to work into my garden this fall.
