Cracked: A Readers
Theatre Production
Pictures by Jamie Rodriguez
Each spring, Mrs. Lawson’s Competitive Speech Honors III students direct
their teammates in productions. Monday night, May 4th, senior Kenzie Confer
directed “Cracked,” a Readers Theatre production about realizing you’re
more than fractures, fears, and failures. Readers Theatre brings prose and
poetry to life on the stage. The focus is on the literature and not on the
performer. “Cracked” included a
production of two essays, four
poems, and one song. The per-
formers included: Aaron Lampe,
Sam Averette, Zeke Phelan, Coya
Darcangelo, Jake Homan, Jonah
Crosby, Stephen Russell, Victoria
Marinoff, Sydney Register, Clayton Register, and Kenzie Confer. Great job!
On Thursday, May 14th
, the
Waccamaw Chorus will perform a
concert in the WHS auditorium
starting at 6:00pm. Everyone is
encouraged to come support
our singers!

On Tuesday, May 5th, Mrs. Aguilar’s,
Mrs. Villamizar’s, and Mrs. Gonzales’
Spanish classes celebrated Cinco De
Mayo. Cinco De Mayo is the celebration
primarily for Mexican-Americans to
celebrate their heritage and the
winning of the Battle of Puebla in the
1860s. The Spanish classes decorated
cookies and miniature piñatas. Students
got to enjoy a tasty treat while learning
about the holiday.

Varsity Baseball Advances to Lower State
On Wednesday, May 5th, the Warrior baseball team
played Barnwell at home for the District Championship.
To advance to Lower Sate and win District, the Warriors
would only need to win one game against Barnwell, and
for Barnwell to advance they
would have to beat the
Warriors twice. Waccamaw
came into the game confi-
dent that they would only
need one game to become
District Champions. The
game was low scoring
throughout as both teams
could not score through the
first seven innings, pushing
the game to extra innings. In
the bottom of the ninth
inning, with two runners on and two outs McKinley Grooms had a clutch hit to right field to walk
off with the victory. Carter Fox also pitched a great game, pitching a 2-hitter and a complete game shutout to set up the
walk-off victory. The Warriors are now District Champions and will advance to Lower State on Saturday at home versus
Bishop England.
Information provided by Coach Hunt
On Monday, May 4th, the boys’ tennis team finished their
regular season play with a doubleheader win over Aynor (7-0,
6-1). On Tuesday, May 5th, the team played a doubleheader
against Mullins for the region title. Congratulations to our
Warriors who took the title with a 7-0, 5-2 win. Justin Dunn, Ben
Hewes, Stephen Russell, Spencer Kemp, and Thomas Rowland all
won their singles matches. In doubles, Justin Dunn/Ben Hewes,
Scott Johnson/Jack Cook, and Will Tiller/Corey Loftus won their
matches. Tiller and Loftus had a come-from-behind win that
went down to a tie-breaker to secure the match.
The tennis team will play Hannah-Pamplico in the first round of
playoffs at Stables Park and the winner of Barnwell vs. Academic
Magnet on Monday, May 11th, also at Stables Park. Coach Hunt
said, “If all goes well, we have a showdown against Bishop
England on Wednesday, May 13th.”
Congratulations, team, and good luck in the playoffs!

Second Round of Playoff Baseball
Last Saturday, May 2nd, the Waccamaw Warriors drove
three hours to play the Barnwell Horses in the second
round of the playoffs. The Warriors started scoring early
with a huge first inning starting with a leadoff hit by
Connor Eckard. The Warriors got many runners on base
with multiple walks and errors that resulted in several
runs in the first inning. Will Golden came up with a clutch
hit that scored several runs and left the first inning with
the score of 5-0. Tucker Perry was dominant on the
mound, not giving up any runs until the fifth inning in
which Barnwell scored two runs. In the sixth inning, Ethan
Chastain extended the lead to 7-2 with a nice base hit
over the shortstop’s head. In the last inning, Justin Busby
came in to pitch to close out the game. Barnwell scored
two runs in a last desperate attempt to comeback.
However, Justin Busby shut them down and ended the
game with a 7-4 playoff victory.

SOFTBALL SEASON COMES TO A CLOSE
The Lady Warriors softball
team beat Wade Hamp-
ton 11-1 in the first round
of playoffs and Battery
Creek in the second round
of playoffs 12-2. However, the team saw
their demise Wednesday night, May 6th, as
they watched their season slip away in a 2-3
loss to Andrews. The team played hard but
were unable to turn the game in their favor.
Congratulations, team, on an
outstanding season!

Article by Davis Eddy, pictures by Josh Stafford and WHS Athletic Booster Facebook page
Playoffs began for the Waccamaw Soccer program this week as both varsities were seeded high. The Lady Warriors
played first with a game against North Charleston at home on Monday, May 4th. It was senior night for the girls who
easily won with a 10-0 shutout. The boys had their senior night on Tuesday, May 5th, when they faced off against North
Charleston as well for the first round of the playoffs. The Warriors dominated with a 12-0 victory, preventing any possi-
ble attempts on goal by North Charleston. Wednesday, the girls took on Andrews in the second round. Yet again, the
Lady Warriors shutout the Yellow Jackets with a 5-0 victory. With this win, the girls advance to the third round and are
set to play Bishop England today.

Wednesday, May 13th from 3:30pm-7:30pm
Attendance Make-Up Day is for those students who have
excessive unexcused absences and need to make up hours.

chance students have to make up hours.
Students have been notified if they are to attend make-up
days. If you have questions, contact Mrs. Stewart.
*Note: Attending these two sessions will not account for all
unexcused absences and it is necessary to remain after school
from Friday, May 29th - Wednesday, June 3rd.
Failure to make up hours will result in the denial of course
credit which may result in retention/denial of credit needed
in order to graduate and assignment to summer school in
order to complete hours of attendance.
