Blood Drive Results Are In Every two seconds someone in the U.S. is in need of blood. A total of 30 million blood components are trans-fused in this country every year. Millions of Americans each year suffer from diseases that require blood transfu-sions such as Cancer and Sickle Cell Anemia, not to men-tion emergency situations like car accident victims. This blood drive was a success and District 12 was able to save lives. There were 22 people who registered

and 21 employees who were able to donate blood. Every pint of blood saves about three lives meaning District 12 was able to save 63 lives. Congratulations to our winner Amy Arnold from the test lab. She walked away with “One Direction” concert tickets. District 12 would like to thank everyone who par-ticipated in this great cause for helping those in need.

Please remember to support the rest of ODOT’s employees by visiting their booths.

Maintenance Crews Repair Bridge Expansion Joint When an inspection of the Pearl Road bridge by the Cleve-land Metroparks Zoo revealed an expansion joint was in need of repair, ODOT maintenance crews stepped up to make the fix. On August 15, Bryan Young, Steven Shane, Joseph Czaplicki, Michelle Harris, Jeffery Cogar, David Waller, Anthony Magani, Jim Lubanovich, Ken Banaszak and Mike Gerstenslager closed lanes on the bridge to make the repairs when a contractor revealed they wouldn’t be able to get to it before winter hit. In just one day this crew repaired the 20’ long by 6” wide expansion joint! Great work by everyone involved!

Dear Mr. (Greg) Kronstain:

Please thank Kevin Kuntz for resolving a noisy man-

hole cover on Rocky River Drive between West Park

and Ernadale. We appreciate Kevin’s persistence

calling Perk Construction and his going out of his

way to keep us informed.

Your whole crew did a great job representing you

during last summer’s construction. People in the

neighborhood were very impressed with their will-

ingness to explain what was happening, accommo-

date traffic, work late if need be, and generally show

their technical skill and concern to get the job done as

quickly as possible. Thank you so much!

Geauga County Fair : Sept. 3-7

In 32 years of field work I have observed some tal-

ented employees. Recently I’ve found that to be true

of the Cleveland crews working our night shift.

The Drainage Crew of Brian Kelley, Chris Briant,

Thomas Gardner and Bryan Polivka, along with

Gerald Goodgame leading the traffic control group,

have all been exemplary in their roles. This week’s

work on I-90 by our Drainage Crew, and the traf-

fic controls in various locations, (including on SR

87 east of I-271 in a non-standard, business district)

were proofs of their talents and dedication.

The night shift Cleveland Garage supervision, in a

very positive, hands-on manner by Jason Szabo, has

also been commendable. I figure it’s time something

positive was said about ‘the deserving’ in our Dis-

trict; and with these crew members fortitude in fulfill-

ing their tasks I believe they’ve earned it.

GVV Bridge Lights Up

As motorists were driving around Cleveland at the end of August, they may have noticed crews installing and test-ing the new LED lighting system on the new GVV Bridge. This environmentally friendly system includes hundreds of lights and is capable of an array of colors. The entire system is expected to become operation this fall.

Thanks so much! Ohio’s state government is now 2 for 2 with providing prompt and informative answers to important questions I’ve had over the years. One reason I’m happy to be moving back! :-) Take care.

Halo Light Hard Hats Danielle Bell In an effort to continue to pro-vide our Highway Technicians (HTs) with a safe work environment, the Safety Department is testing new gear for overnight main-tenance operations. The halo light hard hats are cur-rently being used by HTs at Cleve-land, Riveredge, and Euclid garages along with both Safety Managers Izzy Ciptak and Harold Lora. For five weeks HTs will wear the new halo lights as a trial run while working on the roadways at night. “The halo lights really make a difference,” said Ciptak. “It lights up the entire work area and makes the workers more visible to the motorist public.”

The halo lights are designed to help prevent injuries such as slip, trip and fall hazards by alleviating shadows in the work zone. It is a very simple piece of equipment to operate. There are four settings: halo, hi-alert, task and dim. The lights are battery operated and when fully charged have a battery life of approximately 12 hours. The halo lights are already being used in other cities and District 12 hopes to purchase these lights for all garages.

This photo from the Halo Light com-pany shows how bright these LED lights are.

The light is placed around employees existing hard hat and is switched on and off or to one of four setting via a button on the backside.
