Teacher tips on how to manage participant work

Create one account and have all participants sign in with that account.

Have students embed their creations on a class website or school social network.

Have students create their own accounts and email out the creation.

Investigate the cost of a classroom account which allows one teacher to have a classroom set of logins.

Remember that technology is a tool to share what the students have learned. o Whenever possible, have participants complete the requirements of the assignment before using

the technology to ensure the focus remains on content. This will also ensure partial completion of the project if technical difficulties arise.

Let participants know in advance how much time they have to complete a project.

Have participants save their work often.

Give explicit directions on how to name work files as well as how to submit the information to make it easier to access and grade.

Remind participants about copyright laws and creative commons licensing. Teaching Tips

Have participants type their word list in a word processing program, then copy and paste into the Wordle website.

The number of occurrences of a word determines the size of the word in the word cloud (a word repeated twice will be in larger font than a word only typed once).

If a term includes two words, include the ~ sign between the two words to keep the word together.

To grade, have participants print their completed word cloud or embed in a social networking site or digital portfolio.

To save an electronic version of the Wordle, use the print screen function and then paste the picture into a word processing program and crop out any unwanted parts of the print screen.

There may be samples on the Wordle website that include language that is inappropriate for classroom use; it is recommended to review the samples before showing them to the group.

The finished word cloud graphic may be used to create a poster or t‐shirt design. The final graphic is also useful in determining the main themes of a website or literary document, as well as overuse of words in an essay one has written.

Have students copy and paste essays or letters to analyze the most important text used in a writing.

Wordle Instructions

1. Visit www.wordle.net.

2. Click on "create your own." A new screen will appear.

Create your Wordle:

3. In the blank box, type words that are associated with the assigned topic.

4. Type each word on a separate line. The number of occurrences of a word determines the size of the

5. If a phrase includes more than one word, include the ~ sign between the two words to keep the word

together. For example, medical payments insurance would be typed as:

6. When all words have been added, click "go.”

7. The word cloud will appear on the new screen.

8. The word cloud appearance can be changed by clicking the "randomize" button.

9. The word cloud appearance can also be changed by clicking the "font,” "color,” or "layout" buttons.

Complete your Wordle:

10. Print the word cloud by clicking "print" or save it to the public gallery (such as a website, blog, or

social networking site) by clicking "save to public gallery." The save option will require a title and the

creator's name.

11. Rather than printing, take a screen shot of the word cloud by clicking print screen the keyboard.

Then, open a program such as Microsoft Word and click paste. The word cloud should then be a

picture in the word document. Save the document. Another printing option is to click “print” then

rather than actually printing, save as a PDF file in a program such as Cute PDF Writer (many PDF

programs are available and offer this option).

12. If saving to the public gallery option is chosen, an embed code will appear at the bottom of the word cloud. This embed code can be copied and pasted into a webpage, social networking site, or blog that will link to the word cloud.

How to create a “free” account:

1) Go to www.polleverywhere.com. 2) Click on “Sign Up” in the upper right hand corner. 3) A pop‐up screen will appear that will ask for your email (username) and a desired password.

Timetoast Instruction Sheet Using Timetoast to create timelines

1. Visit www.timetoast.com and set up an account.

Prezi Instruction Sheet

After logging in, click "new prezi" and choose a name and description for your Prezi. Then click "new prezi."

Choose a template if you like (these are rather structured) or choose the

blank option.

Next click "choose"

From this screen, you can add text anywhere by double‐clicking.

Change the font by clicking on the options above the text. Add text by

typing in the editing box. Click anywhere in the work

area to close the editing box.

A new text box can be added anywhere simply by clicking.

To change the text size, click on the text, then choose "+" or "‐".

To move the text, click on the text, and click and drag using the hand icon.

To rotate the text, click on the text. When the

outline box appears, hover over one of the corner

circles. An additional rotation circle will appear.

Click and drag on it to rotate the text as desired.

To delete, click on the trash can.

To edit the text, click on “edit text.”

The sequence, or “path” is shown on the left side of

the screen.

To change the appearance, click "template" and choose

one of the pre‐made color schemes or choose "theme

wizard" and create your own.

To go back to the menu, simply click “templates” again.

Add extra interest to your prezi by choosing "frames"

and embellishing with these. When clicked on, a menu appears. Use as you would to change text. Click and

drag to move these frames, arrows, and lines.

The "insert" circle menu allows for the addition of images,

You Tube links, charts, files, power point presentations,

background music, diagrams and shapes. The same rules

apply‐‐drag to move, click on the item and the menu will

appear to allow for changes in size, rotation, and for

deleting.

Any time you'd like to zoom in or out of the workspace,

you may do so with the center knob of the mouse, or by

using the "+" and "‐" options under the house to the right.

Images may be added from a file on the computer, or via a Google search function within Prezi. Simply click

the “insert” menu, then type a keyword into the search bar and click the magnifying glass icon.

From the search results, scroll through the images and click on the desired image, then click “insert”. It will

be inserted into the Prezi.

Choose the "edit path" to organize your presentation. A numbered path will become visible Drag slides to re‐

order them within the left side of the screen. Click “done” when you have finished.

Storybird reverses the process of visual storytelling by starting with the image and "unlocking" the story inside; therefore, it is helpful to first choose an artist or a theme, and then create and write your story.

To grade, have all participants log in with the same class account to use as a “turn in” box; make sure participants put their name under “by” on the cover page.

Make sure to tell your participants whether to make their completed Storybirds public or private during the publishing process; anyone can view public but only you can view private.

To get the largest selection of pictures when you begin to create your storybird, find a particular artist and click on their name. Then, click “see all artwork.” This will give you all of the art by that artist rather than just one “theme” that the artist has created.

Storybirds can be embedded onto other websites and blogs.

Storybird Instruction Sheet Storybird reverses the process of visual storytelling by starting with the image and "unlocking" the story inside. Therefore, it is helpful to first choose an artist or a theme, and then create and write your story.

Have participants write a script for their video prior to entering the website. Have participants log in under one classroom account to make grading easier and also have the ability to monitor progress.

1. Go to www.edmodo.com

2. Begin by creating an account or sign in if you already have one.

3. Follow the directions to create an account. You will be guided through the process.

Creating and Utilizing a New Group (Class)

1. Click on Create to develop a new class.

2. Fill in the group (class) information and click create.

3. Once the group has been created, this is what your new class will look like. Share the group code

with participants to link to your classes. This information can be entered by clicking Join once an

account has been created. Once they enter the group code, they will be added to the class.

4. As the teacher, you can create an alert, assignment, chat, or poll. When you click on assignment, you

will see the following. You can upload assignment documents, rubrics, or other information. You can

also select a due date for assignments.

5. When you click on quiz, you should click the Create a Quiz button. You can add questions and then

assign the quiz to various classes.

6. Selecting a poll allows you to ask a question and give choices for participants to select.

7. To manage members, see login information or reset passwords, click Manage on the right.

8. Once an assignment has been completed, participants can click Turn In next to the due date on that

assignment. There is a place for a reply and to attach or link files.

9. To view the completed work by all participants, click on Turned In or notifications. This will tell you

what assignments have not been graded. You have the ability to put in a grade directly on the

participant’s posted assignment.
