CHICAGO (AP) — Grain fu-tures were lower Friday on the Chi-cago Board of Trade.

Wheat for September deliv-ery was off 9.75 cents to $5.1175 a bushel; December corn lost 12 cents at 4.0275 a bushel; Decem-ber oats fell 6.50 cents at 2.4250 a bushel; while November soybeans

declined 15.50 cents to $9.65 a bushel.

Beef and pork were lower on the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. October live cattle was off .53 cent to $1.4412 a pound; August feeder cattle was .10 cent lower to $2.0967 a pound; while October lean hogs fell .68 cent to $.6402 a pound.

U.S. stocks closed broadly lower Friday for the fourth day in a row. Weak quarterly results and outlooks from several companies weighed on the market. New signs pointing to a slowing of China’s economy also added to investor jitters.

FOR THE DAY:The Dow Jones industrial aver-

age lost 163.39 points, or 0.9 per-cent, to 17,568.53.

The Standard & Poor’s 500 in-dex fell 22.50 points, or 1.1 percent, to 2,079.65.

The Nasdaq composite shed 57.78 points, or 1.1 percent, to

5,088.63.

FOR THE WEEK:The Dow lost 517.92 points, or

2.9 percent.The S&P 500 index fell 46.99

points, or 2.2 percent.The Nasdaq fell 121.52 points,

or 2.3 percent.

Thune’s Office Accepting Fall Internship ApplicationsWASHINGTON — Sen. John

Thune (R-S.D.) is currently seeking intelligent, hard-work-ing college students to serve as fall interns in his Senate offices located in Aberdeen, Rapid City, Sioux Falls, and Washington, D.C.

Interns in Thune’s state offices will participate in constituent service and state outreach activities, while students in the Washington, D.C., office will have the opportunity to witness the legislative process, give Capitol building tours, and attend Senate votes, hearings and press conferences. Both in-state and Washington, D.C.,

internships will allow students to work closely with constitu-ents, sharpen their research and writing skills, and learn a multitude of valuable office skills.

“Students who intern in a Senate office have a unique opportunity to experience our democratic process with a front-row seat to the action,” said Thune. “Interns gain valuable knowledge about both state and national issues and an understanding of the inner workings of a Senate office. I encourage all college students to consider applying for this rewarding experience.”
