SOME ASSEMBLY REQUIRED

Author Anne Lamott has recounted her journey out of bulimia, a serious eating disorder. She spoke

candidly about how enslaved she had been, and how she felt such helpless despair. She was also

very forthright in insisting that her freedom from bulimia is nothing less than a miracle, and a gift of

God.

She spoke of how she had to learn to eat all over again, how God had to teach her, as she put it, “to

feed myself;” to get reoriented to food in a healthy way. This was part of the gift, and the gift would

be of little value without it. There’s certainly no doubt that her deliverance was God’s gift. Yet, at

the same time, she was having to learn to feed herself. It struck me that some of God’s greatest gifts

come like many of the toys the kids get at Christmas: “some assembly required.” Those toys can’t be

enjoyed until we invest the time and effort in putting them together. In the same way, Anne Lamott

couldn’t be truly free from bulimia until she was able to see food and hunger in the proper way.

After all, being “free” from bulimia would be meaningless without learning how to stay free. It

would be like the guy who quit smoking—he quit seventeen times a day.

Think it through.

This in no way demeans God’s gifts.

It’s just that many—perhaps, most—of those gifts,

in the Lord’s good wisdom, involve our participation

if we are to enjoy them.

SERVICE OF COMFORT AND HOPE

Sunday, December 8

1:00 p.m. | Chapel

As we remember those we have loved

and lost, whether it was recently or

many years ago, we will gather as a

church family on Sunday, December 8,

in the Galloway Chapel at 1:00 p.m. to

honor those who will not be with us

during the holiday season. Through

song, prayer, music and scripture, we

will remember that God will show us

the way and will go with us into our

tomorrow. You may light a candle in

memory of your loved one.

We will observe All Saints Sunday on Sunday, November 3.

It is a day of Remembrance for the saints.

Join as we celebrate the communion of saints

and remember those we have lost this past year.

RECOGNIZING OUR

VETERANS AND THOSE

IN MILITARY SERVICE

November 10, 2019 9:45 a.m.

On Sunday, November 10, we will

honor our veterans and service

members at both worship services. We

invite our veterans to wear name tags

(there will be a table set up in the

Gathering Area between services

where you can provide us with your

name and the branch of service in

which you served, for our records, if

you wish). Please plan to wear a name

tag November 10, so that you may be

recognized for your service. We invite

the congregation to the Gathering

Area between 9:45-10:45 a.m. to have

an opportunity to greet our veterans

who have served in the military.

My dearest Galloway family,

I want to express my appreciation for everyone’s

support to allow my six week sabbatical. I

recognize the immense privilege of the

opportunity to have your blessing for intentional

time away, resources from the United Methodist

Foundation and personal savings to embark on

travel and tours, and friends and staff team who

cared for my regular responsibilities during my

sabbatical. Being able to “step away” from the

daily tasks of the work I am called to here at Galloway, enabled me “step into” a different

rhythm filled with rest, renewal, and a reaffirmation of my vocational calling. Many lessons

emerged during my time away, including:

the simple joy of enjoying a meal with loved ones rather than grabbing a

quick bite to eat on the run;

the incredible freedom I experienced from disconnecting from email, texts,

and social media;

the powerful insight gained by journeying in the footsteps of Paul and

remarking on his connections in the marketplace of his time;

a strengthened sense of connection with the early church and our historic

creeds, which unite us in the midst of cultural and theological differences.

As I continue to process the experience upon my return, one of my goals is to discover a

healthier rhythm for the long haul. I look forward to opportunities in the days ahead to share

my continued reflections in sermons or small groups or around a lunch table.

At its September meeting, the Galloway Men’s Group heard the

story of the Delta Grace mission based in Sunflower County. Mr.

Richard Henley of Brandon First UMC was our guest. Mr. Henley

heads a team from Brandon First that travels to Sunflower twice

each year for a weekend’s work on Delta Grace projects.

Delta Grace operates under the umbrella of United Methodist Volunteers in Mission, UMVIM, a sister

organization to UMCOR. UMVIM works with poverty-stricken families all over the world to help improve

their quality of life while UMCOR provides global early response disaster relief in the wake of storms and

other catastrophic events affecting whole communities.

Delta Grace’s web site describes their mission this way:

Delta Grace is a year–round mission hub that provides

mission opportunities, beds, showers, kitchen facilities

and a meeting room for mission teams that stay within

the hub facility. Mission teams will work on homes of

many who have lost hope.

Delta Grace provides everything a team needs: a dormitory facility (separated by gender), all necessary tools

and equipment, and job assignments appropriate for each individual team member’s skills and talents. Tasks

range from light demolition and construction to providing spiritual and emotional support for those in need.

We hope to partner with Brandon First on their spring trip to the Delta with the possibility of forming our

own Delta Grace team in the future. If you are interested in becoming part of a Delta Grace team, contact

Mark Wall - [email protected] or Pat Taylor - [email protected].

Make plans to join us for our next UMM Meeting, November 21 at 5:30 p.m.

Tickets will be $20 per person—reservations required with a deadline of Nov. 1. The meal will be provided by Amerigo’s.

The following activities will take place at Clausell Elementary school during the month November. They could really use your help.

Career Fair-The month of November- Volunteers come at their availability to discuss their career. You pick the time that works in your schedule. Just let us know so they know you are coming.

American Education Week-November 18-22, 2019-Would you like to help sponsor breakfast or lunch or bake something delicious

Touch a Truck- November 22nd-Bring your truck or antique car to the school and give a tour of the vehicle.

Sometimes the waters need to be troubled for healing to take place. The Adopt-A-School coordinator Dr. Rhoda Barnes troubled the waters at the city of Jackson Department of streets, many, many times. The streets leading to and in front of Clausell Elementary School had pot holes. Yes like many of Jackson’s streets! Ms. Carla Thomas, principal, called Dr. Barnes to inform her all the pot holes have been filled. You may not be able to visit the school they can use your advocate spirit.

The 5th Graders are giving back to the Grace Place community. Once a week they fill pill bottles with shampoo and body lotion they go into the hygiene kits for our guests.

We could use regular sized bottles of Shampoo, Conditioner, Body Lotion and Body Wash.

KEEP THOSE PILL BOTTLES ROLLING IN!

The children are having a ball with their Book Buddies. We could sure use some more Buddies.

“SHARING THE LIGHT”

The Methodist Children’s Home needs our participation in a new campus event they are hosting for the community. This event will require financial sponsors, volunteers to help prep the campus, people to decorate Christmas trees and light houses, and people to help during the event as well as people to take down decorations after Christmas. On Friday, December 6 and Saturday, December 7 the MCH campus will be lighted with 25 Christmas trees, an interactive nativity, a display of the Christmas story as told in Luke, and groups of carolers. The event is FREE and open to the public. Please consider how you, your family, or your small group can help in one of the categories below:

1. Participate in quarterly campus clean up day on Saturday, November 2. 2. Seek business sponsors for this event. Information Packets with giving levels are

available in the gathering area. 3. Donate outdoor lights, wreaths, or tree decorations that you no longer use. Items can

be left at Galloway’s reception area before November 2. 4. Help decorate trees, houses, or help turn the cafeteria into the North Pole during the

week of December 2 5. Work Friday or Saturday night at the event as a parking attendant, a golf cart driver, a

server of cider or hot chocolate, or selling ornaments. 6. Help break down the displays in early January.

For questions contact Ann Bartling at 601-506-0914 or email [email protected].

GRAND OPENING OF

NEW STEWPOT FOOD PANTRY!

In November, the pantry will move to a newly remodeled area in the main Stewpot

building with all new freezers and shelving. Those that come for food will be told how

many items they may have from each section, and then they pick out their own food—

more like shopping at a store. Volunteers are still needed to make the process work. If

you would be willing to volunteer one morning every other month, contact team

coordinator Barbara Powell, 601-506-6131. You will be teamed with an experienced

partner.

YOUTH REFLECTIONS

FROM THE MISSISSIPPI STATE FAIR

Our youth enjoyed a time of fellowship, fun, and food on Sunday,

October 6 during their outing to the State Fair. The State Fair

Outing is something that our students look forward to every year.

UNITED METHODIST STUDENT DAY | DECEMBER 1ST

On Sunday, December 1 there will be a special offering designated for United Methodist Student Day. Student

loan debt is at an all time high in the United States. For many students it is not a realistic option to take on

that kind of financial risk. Through scholarships, United Methodists are helping young people have financial

freedom. These scholarships are made possible through the gifts given on United Methodist Student Day.

Several members of Galloway have been recipients of scholarships offered by the United Methodist General

Scholarship Fund. By supporting United Methodist students, you are an answered prayer. You will be part of

providing the resources for students to get to the next level of life. Please give generously.

SPECIAL THANK YOU!

To Melissa Eatherly for coordinating and preparing the boxes for In-Home communion.

We are grateful for our members who extended the table to those in our community who are homebound or in senior living communities. Our Communion servers included: Leslie and Joel Bobo, Mary Ann Darsey, Kevin Dowling, Melissa Eatherly, Gayle Entrekin and Jim Moritsugu, Don Fortenberry, Suzanne and Ron Griffith, Jean Hudspeth, Dale Hunt, Bill Lipscomb, Karen Redhead, Susan Richards, Walter Roberts and the Galloway Youth, Emily Sanford, Lee Smith, Mechelle Stockett and Susan Weems.

Galloway members answer our Prayer Line each Sunday

during the 11:00 a.m. worship service. Training takes less

than ten minutes, and the time spent praying with others

blesses both parties in prayer. If you are willing to serve in

this wonderful ministry, please contact Susan Richards at

[email protected] or call 601-326-3447.

Grief takes many forms: the

loss through death of a

loved one, health or

caregiving issues, job loss,

life changes such as the

empty nest, and many other

transitions. Galloway’s grief

group is a safe place to

process grief with others,

and to know that you are not alone. Facilitated by

counselor and Stay-Home Hospice Chaplain, Julie

Orr, this group meets on the first Monday of the

month. The next meeting will be on Monday,

November 4, 5:00-6:30 p.m. in the Parlor. If you

need more information, please contact Susan

Richards at 601-326-3447.
