Most people then and even now for that matter would tend to think of power and authority as something given to a person to direct others or to an evil extent, to tell people what to do and benefit from it. Jesus on the other hand gives authority to Peter, but reminds him that the authority is to be used for the service of others. Power is too often used for self- serving purposes in the world, but the Kingdom of God is built on ministry, compassion, mercy and love. The idea of servant leadership is an important concept in the church and essential to its very reality. Think of Jesus washing the feet of the disciples for example. It was not just a gesture, which in today's world is all that is done. It was reflective of an attitude of living. If it was just a gesture, the action would have ended and Jesus would have said to himself, "boy do I feel good for having done that". The reason Jesus washed their feet was not so that he would feel good about helping others, but to show them what was expected of them as leaders in the church. Ministry is done for the benefit of others and gestures are done for the benefit of the person doing the action. As disciples of the Lord Jesus, we need to model our lives as servant leaders at church, at home, at work and at school. We need to be willing to be agents of change not by seeking power for the sake of power, but agents of change by putting ourselves at the service of others. I would encourage you to consider taking a first step in this mission by offering to serve your parish in the many liturgical ministries for example, all of which need help from servers on up. The Parishes of

MALLIA'S MOMENTS by Fr. Joe Mallia

Like most things, Jesus and the whole of the New Testament, tend to turn the meanings of things on their heads. Most people then and even now for that matter would tend to think of power and authority as something given to a person to direct others or to an evil extent, to tell people what to do and benefit from it. Jesus on the other hand gives authority to Peter, but reminds him that the authority is to be used for the service of others. Power is too often used for self-serving purposes in the world, but the Kingdom of God is built on ministry, compassion, mercy and love.

Rectory Update

I have been slowly doing some updates to the rectory at St. Augustine. Rooms have been painted, some carpet and flooring has been replaced thanks to the Altar Sodality, and we have changed out some of the lighting fixtures. Most of this was done without costing the parish any money at all. Presently, in the dining room of the rectory there is a long folding table and a bunch of chairs that do not match. I was wondering if anyone had an extra formal dining room set they are no longer in need of and would like to donate to the parish. The room is rather large and so I was looking at a table that would seat 8 people. If you are interested in helping, please contact me at the rectory. Thank you.

Cemetery Updates

Most people don't like the thought of making plans for their funerals, but I would encourage you to at least think about where it is you would like to have as your final resting place. There are plenty of plots available at St. Phillip Cemetery. Even though the plan is to eventually sell the church building, we are planning on putting up a small structure on the cemetery grounds on the location of the original church that will serve as a place were we can hold committal services in bad weather and in the back portion use it as a storage area for cemetery needs. We do a fair number of burials at other cemeteries for our parishioners at Holy Family and I would encourage you to consider being laid to rest at St. Phillip Cemetery.

There remains a smaller number of plots available at St. Michael's cemetery and as a result, the cemetery has

purchased some 20 acres off of 31 Mile Road in Lennox that backs up to the present cemetery. We are in the process of moving forward to have the township allow us to use the land for cemetery use. We have also begun clearing the land of the overgrowth to better distinguish where the property lines are. The development of that land, should we get permission to use it as a cemetery, is some time off and it may be wise to turn over the cemetery to the Archdiocese of Detroit to use as a catholic cemetery in northern Macomb county. The reason for this would be the financial burden of creating the infrastructure for the new cemetery and the building of the necessary mausoleums to keep the cemetery operational for the long term is beyond our ability to finance. I would encourage you to think about getting a plot now since there is no doubt that if we turn the cemetery over to the diocese, the price will go up. As more information is known, I will keep you informed.

Rumors

I know that there is no way of getting rid of all rumors, but we need to be careful that we do not participate or give in to the temptation to start rumors. They are usually lies or gross exaggerations of what is going on or what was said. I can't tell you how many times I have heard people tell me what it is that I was supposed to have said. So, please, unless you hear something directly from me or read it in the church paper about the parish, school or anything else, assume it is false. I do my very best to keep you informed as to what is happening and why decisions are being made. We also do a very good job in keeping you aware of the financial situation of our parishes. Let us work together to end the rumor mill. It only seeks to separate when we are called to bring people together. Thank you

Have a great week. God bless you all.

Thank you from Fr. Anthony Mutio

Thank you most sincerely on my behalf and on behalf of my Diocese for giving us the opportunity to solicit funds for the Catholic Diocese of Kitui at St. Augustine and Holy Family Parishes. Thanks also for the hospitality you extended to me during my stay in your parish rectory. You really made my stay comfortable and I felt at home far from home.

It was a pleasure for me sharing and praying with you. You were very receptive. Your generous contributions and prayers will go a long way in propagating the Kingdom of God in the Diocese of Kitui, Kenya.

We are seeking more leaders for Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW). Leaders proclaim the readings and gospel, lead the children in singing a Psalm response, share the main message, and conclude with a simplified creed and intercessory prayers before rejoining Mass. A detailed leader guide is provided. CLOW is offered at the 9:00am Mass at St. Augustine and the 10:30am Mass at Holy Family. If you are interested in joining this ministry or have questions, please contact Susan Finley in the Faith Formation Office of either parish at (586) 727-9290 or (810) 392-2056.

about becoming Catholic

Is engaged or married to a Catholic and would like to

A baptized Catholic, but has not received religious

All are welcome. Call the Faith Formation office at either parish or email [email protected] or [email protected] for more information.

Are you listening for

your call?

Most of us want to know that what we say and do has made a positive impact. A great way to do that is to volunteer to be a catechist. As you read this, take a few seconds to search your heart… Could God be leading you to this opportunity to make a Real Difference? ❖ Not a huge time commitment (2-3 hours a week:

half in the classroom, half in preparation). ❖ No special knowledge of Scripture or Theology

needed. You learn with the children. ❖ Lots of support, materials, resources and hands-

Q. Why do the four Gospels seem to present a different message of salvation than the rest of the New Testament? A. Sacred Scripture must be taken as a whole. The Old Testament books are pointing towards Jesus Christ, the Messiah. The books which follow the Gospels are explanatory. Each of the Gospels has its own emphasis on the ministry of Christ.

Matthew writes to a Jewish audience and emphasizes Jesus’ fulfillment of Old Testament prophecy, proving that He is the long-awaited Messiah. Mark writes a fast-paced, condensed account, recording Jesus’ miraculous deeds and not recording His long discourses. Luke portrays Jesus as the remedy of the world’s ills, emphasizing His perfect humanity and humane concern for the weak, the suffering, and the outcast. John emphasizes Jesus’ deity by selecting many conversations and sayings of Jesus on the subject and also including “signs” that prove He is the Son of God. The Four Gospels work together to provide a complete picture of Jesus the Messiah. They present a beautiful portrait of the God-Man. Although the Gospels differ slightly in theme, the central subject is the same. All present Jesus as the One who died to save sinners. All record His resurrection. Whether the writers presented Jesus as the King, the Servant, the Son of Man, or the Son of God, they had the common goal - that people believe in Him.

Parish Council Corner

The Parish Council meeting on Wednesday evening, August 16, covered even more items than usual. The began with an introduction of our new members, Joe Yelencich and Melissa Webster. The “existing” members were very appreciative that Joe and Melissa are willing to volunteer their time and expertise to serve the parish in such an important role.

The annual officer election of officers was also held. Chris Shinska volunteered to remain as Council Chair and was elected by acclamation. In like fashion, Chris Stevens was elected Vice Chair and Tom Obee as interim Secretary until such time as Anna Kuntz determines whether she would like to resume that position.

Fr. Joe reported on a number of matters of importance: First of all, we are still waiting on permission from the AOD to hire an architect to demolish the buildings we still own. We are going to scrap some of the buildings, but we need to get the asbestos abated, especially the caulking on one of the buildings. We also need to consider removing some of the trees on the property, as they are a potential risk. The Altar Sodality is taking the stone house apart and selling the useful parts to support their many services to the parish. The Knights of Columbus are considering using one of the sheds behind one of the buildings for their own purposes. Fr. also reported that we now have the deed for OW Street.

A discussion of the Synod Document, “Unleashing the Gospel,” especially the section on Parish Culture, took up a considerable portion of the meeting. There was general agreement that some of the propositions were a bit vague and unclear, but Fr. Joe said he expected some clarification at the AOD Priests’ Convocation from September 24-28. Fr. Joe and the members of the Council agreed that we were probably already doing many things that meet the requirements of some of those

We would like to thank Fr. Joe for anointing and for the support given to our Mother at her time of illness and passing. The Mass was a beautiful tribute to her life! We would also like to thank Joe Agosta and Connie Schweiger for the wonderful music. Thank you also to Deacon Alan for the rosary and Mitch Marcinkowski for assisting as sacristan. We would also like to thank the luncheon committee for preparing a delicious meal. Thank you to all our parish family who donated food, sent a card, or shared kind words with us about our Mother. Thanks to all!

Sincerely, The Family of Virginia Piontkowski-Ren

During the month of September, we will be collecting new twin and full-sized blankets for the homeless. These blankets will benefit those in need at Safe Horizons in Port Huron. If you are able to

purchase a blanket for those less fortunate, it will be greatly appreciated. There will be a container located in the back of the church for your donation. This is a way we can give back for the many blessings we have. Thank you in advance.

A Blessing for Students and Teachers

September always had a special meaning for me growing up. It was usually a time to reinvent myself as I started school again. See, my Dad was an officer in the Air Force, and we usually moved to a new Air Force base in the summer. As each September rolled around, I knew I was going to a new school; I eventually realized that every kid had the same feeling. School gives us all the ability to create ourselves anew with new comprehension about the wonders of creation and the love of knowledge. Let us pray for all students and their teachers as they begin a new school year.

God of all knowledge and understanding, we seek your guidance and direction as both students and teachers begin a new school year. Look with favor upon those who have given so much to be teachers. We know the nervousness of new students, and know you are with them. Give us all the wisdom and patience we need to be good students and teachers. We ask all of this in the name of THE good teacher, Jesus, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God. Amen.

St. Augustine School ~ Summer Hours

St. Augustine School office is open: Monday through Thursday 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Regular office and school hours resume on August 28th.

propositions, such as our monthly Operation Olive Branch, but could expand them and add new ones. For instance, we might videotape one of our liturgies every week for the homebound, which would also actively involve some of our technically gifted young people. Similarly, we have already been active in providing a more welcoming atmosphere to the parish.

Fr. Joe reported that we are $25,000 over our CSA obligation; this is essentially our money to be used for our purposes. Father also provided a preliminary Festival update: it was probably the most financially successful festival we have ever held. Raffle tickets for most everything sold very well and there were 650 people for the dinner. The Golf Tournament had 14 teams, a good response for the first year. Dueling Pianos and Johnny and the Fenders were very good, although the suggestion for next year was to reverse their nights. More Festival details will be made available as the staff and Fr. Joe have time to process them.

In general, the parish’s financial condition has been very good this year. We no longer owe Holy Family anything, and our outstanding debt to the AOD has been reduced to $319,000, substantially lower than this time last year. We are faithfully meeting our payroll and have no other outstanding debts. However, we do need to improve the wiring in the church itself.

The school is ready to go and significantly improved. The damage to the boilers from the power outage has been repaired and the school now has separate zone valves. Enrollment is up a little. We have hired a 6

th

grade teacher, and we are looking for a shared time music teacher. There are new texts for some classes and Chromebooks have been purchased. Additionally, the teachers have more computer lab space.

Special items:

1) The Beatification Mass for Fr. Casey is November 18 at 4pm in Ford Field. We have been allotted 100 tickets and will hold a drawing for those interested in going: two tickets each for 50 people. There will be buses leaving at 1pm, arriving approximately at 2pm and likely returning at about 8pm. The drawing is the only means of obtaining tickets for the event. 2) On Tuesday evening, October 24, at 7pm, we will be participating with area Lutherans at Trinity Lutheran to celebrate the 500

th anniversary of the Protestant

Reformation. Our choir will be singing jointly with theirs. 3) The Council agreed to host a Rosary Rally on October 15 after the 9:30am Mass. This will be a commemoration of the 100

th Anniversary of Fatima.

4) We plan to host the Judelaires for a Christmas concert, assuming Fr. Joe can find a date that doesn’t conflict with other activities at that time.
