OUR MISSION: To equip

disciples of Jesus Christ for ministry

L E A D E R S H I P C O U N C I L AUGUST NOTES

Construction of our expanded facilities appears to be finally started! The porta-johns and construction supervisor’s trailer are being moved to our parking lot as I write this article. They will also begin putting up the silt fences and building temporary office partitions any day. While I do not see any bulldozers at this time, at least something is happening. Dur-ing the construction of the new offices and Narthex, everyone will need to enter and leave the building via the rear entrance near the dumpster. The contractor will erect signs di-recting people to that door. It is anticipated that the main entrance will be back open be-fore the end of year.

Our August Leadership Council meeting was filled with information about upcoming pro-grams and events. Apparently the council members and their committee members have finished their summer vacations and travels and are busy working on getting the 2016-2017 activities underway! I was very pleased to see the Sunday coffee hour back in place and the Labor Day Picnic happening. I hope that we can continue these very important fellowship programs as we move through the various phases of construction.

Lori Blass-Adams and Gail Koerner are working on developing a computer based calendar of events for Peace. This will simplify the posting of dates for activities throughout the year, and will be available on the church website for all to see.

Streaming live has had some technical glitches that are being worked on. I am told that sev-eral homebound and snowbird members have been watching the Sunday services on a regu-lar basis and that the number of viewers is growing. As we move through construction and new audio/video equipment is installed, we hope that this remote experience improves for those that find it a convenient way to stay connected with Peace and with Christ.

On Sunday Sept.11, the ELCA church wide conducts their annual “God’s Work, Our Hands” event. Many churches participate in this program on a local level. Here at Peace, several of our members show their support by providing helping hands at the Gladiolus Food Pantry. Peace has long been known as a “Serving Church,” not only on this day but throughout the year with many servant days at various locations.

Several maintenance items are being taken care of over the next several weeks in prepara-tion of the return of the snowbirds and making things ready for the “High Season.” Some of the items that you will notice are: the cleaning of the carpets as well as the building and grounds; the repair of light fixtures in the sanctuary; the installation of a motorized chande-lier lift to facilitate hanging of the Advent wreath and other chancel displays; and the up-grading of our security system.

So as fall approaches, know that the family of Peace is eager to welcome back all of our traveling family members and pray that everyone will have safe travels and a wonderful winter experience at Peace and in southwest Florida.

Yours in Christ,

Jim Krueger

Leadership Council Chairman

Dear Friends in Christ,

I was blessed to attend the “Grace Gathering,” during the ELCA Churchwide Assembly, August

10-13, in New Orleans. I attended the event at the request of Bishop Schaefer as I chair the Synod’s Reformation 500 Committee. Pr. Ken Blyth, a member of the committee, who is the Pastor of Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Hernan-do, FL, also attended the Gathering. My participation was covered by the Syn-

od’s budget.

The “Grace Gathering” was a venue for those planning the observance of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation. The 2017 commemoration will build on the past 50 years of Lutheran-Roman Catholic dialogues. There has been a realization that there is a great deal that our churches hold in common. It was a blessing to meet Bishop Emer-itus Donald McCoid, with whom I had served in Pittsburgh. He was one of the leaders with Roman Catholic scholars of a study “Declaration on the Way.” That study was overwhelmingly accepted by the Churchwide Assembly. The study is a gift to the Church and will need to be considered by everyone in the church. We will prayerfully consider how the Spirit is leading us into the future. There is a hope that it will lead to the sharing of Communion as we do with other Protestant Churches. My head is filled with wonderful ways that Peace and other churches can observe the anniversary of the Reformation.

It was fun to visit the infamous Bourbon Street in New Orleans to enjoy a wonderful jazz band. Wow—could the musicians play as they shared their love of music.

My love and appreciation for the breadth of the church was reinforced by participation in the Assembly and Grace Gathering. Peace Lutheran Church is a vital part of the community of faith for which I am most thankful. A very exciting year is before us with our ministry, mis-sion, building expansion, and the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation.

In Christ, Pastor Walter

STRESS AND ANXIETY

Scripture reminds us that “the perfect love of Christ casts out fear.” We need to be faith-filled, not fear-filled. Unfortunately, most of us still worry and are filled with anxiety. Fear creates spiritual amnesia. It dulls our miracle memory. We forget what Jesus has done for us in the past. He has always been there for us, regardless of the problem.

What has brought stress into your life recently? Financial burdens? A beginning of memory loss? The doctor telling you that tests show some possible cancer? Retirement causing you to feel un-needed and useless? Relationship struggles that are hard to rectify? Why do we allow anxiety to flatten us and leave us filled with panic? What causes us to feel that our lives are out of control?

When problems arise, which cause us to feel paralyzed, that’s the exact time that we need to seek the power of God. We need to remind ourselves that God doesn’t send the struggles, we didn’t ask for them, we can’t control them ourselves, and we don’t deserve these problems. Perhaps the biggest struggle when problems come at us is not to see how to stop them, but to find our faith. Whatever is causing us stress right now, do we believe that God can take care of it? Jesus has promised to be with us always. We not only need to hear these words, but be-lieve them as well. Go to God FIRST; otherwise, stress takes us over. Our problems may seem too overwhelm-ing for us, but they are not too big for God.

I’d like to share some things that might help us turn our eyes from the struggles to the Savior. What lessons can we learn when we are filled with anxiety or panic attacks? -We often want a quick fix to our problems. We need to understand that even after the struggle has passed, it will weave disruption and mess things up. i.e. After surgery, we need rehab; after a tornado we need to repair the damage.

-Don’t obsess over your struggles. Focus on caring for others rather than dwelling on your own problems. Caring for others is an antidote for depression.

-Share your struggles with a friend or a person in your faith community. God promises to encourage you as you share, and your burden will be lightened.

-Pray believing in and thanking God for being with you. Don’t demand, beg or plead. Rather listen to what God is leading you to do so that you can grow. The important question is not to ask, “Why did this happen to me?” Instead, ask, “What for?” What’s the purpose that comes out of every adversity?

-Rehearse and reflect on your past life until you are filled with gratitude and hope for all of your blessings. God has been with you and will continue to be with you.

-Relinquish the illusion of control. Let go and let God. Pray for trust that God goes before you into every day.

Struggles WILL come! We need to be prepared to face them. An active prayer life, worshipping regularly and intentionally caring for others empower us to face what comes at us.

Adversity is never stronger than your Savior! It is never beyond the control of Christ. Starve your doubts! Feed your faith!

In Christ, Pastor Mick Roschke

It is July 30, 2016. It was a dark and stormy night. There was peace. There was war. There was a star. There was a rocket breaking into pieces. There was a reflection. A reflection on three days with a gaggle of Lutheran Church Musicians. 84 to be exact. Highest percentage was ELCA and the lowest was WELS. There was a building that said LSTC, resources of Christ Seminary-Seminex and facilities of McCormick Theological School. And underneath the green “quadrangle” was a parking garage. Each of these items touched a spot inside of my head or heart (sometimes both). Seminex came into being just blocks from the church I at-

tended growing up. It was a brouhaha from heck but I never understood it as a child or teenager. McCormick has produced a couple of friends along the way. One of which was a professor of History at the University of Cincinnati and a member of the teaching committee during my seminary days. Dr. Paul Irwin was the man from whom I learned to collect coins by watching where I walked. Today I am sure he would add, and not watching my iPhone. Parking garages. The summer I worked Busch Stadium Garage East telling people where to go as they wandered downtown to cheer on that baseball team with birds on the bat. (they were not putting the bat on a ball in those years) Continuing Education indeed. All old stuff brought up from the file drawers located in the pit of my brain. The newer stuff on floppy discs located in the same drawers. All of these items required much searching to find the drawer, let alone the item INSIDE I needed. What a way to run a business so to speak.

So, was there anything new in that mess of old stuff. Why, I am glad you asked that question. Of all the things taught, shared and swapped, there is one thing I retained more than water after a salty dinner. Everything is new musically.

Oh my stars and garters. What did he say? Or what data did Ric just enter??????? Well, you know, it just goes to show you, old dogs and organists can learn new tricks. The trick here, with thanks to Paul Westermeyer and others, is simply this... The music might be old. It might have been written 5 centuries ago. O come, O come, Emmanuel. It might have been written in the aughts. Rise, O Church like Christ arisen. It might be the Little Deuce Coupe re-worded with Run, Run reindeer to make it a Christmas song. Or it might just be the gathering Hymn on a given Sun-day. All are new.

On July 31, 2016, I took an informal survey from our congregation. The gathering hymn was How Great Thou Art. A perineal favorite and highly requested hymn. It is my guess that the 75 or so people will have sung it minimally 10 times in their lives (a rather LOW guess). That results in 750 renderings of the hymn (the answer was quite literally in the 1000’s!) However, here is the zinger as taught by Paul Westermeyer----it will be a NEW song. Is that truly possible? Yes, and without much thought required. It will be the ONLY rendition in time and space by those people in that place with that organ and that mix of voices in just that way. It will be “Newly Rendered”. If you were to rec-ord it, and play it again Sam, it would not be a new song because it has already been sung. It might be preserved but it will not be new.

Israel sang a new song to God in thanksgiving for God’s guidance and providence. We have a new song in our heart because of God’s grace and the precious life and death of Jesus and the gift of God’s presence in the Holy Spirit. Lutherans are called to die and be raised every day. Some Jewish traditions believe that the soul is carried to heaven every night and sent safely back to the body as it awakens every morning. That is pretty new as well.

All of my “old” experiences” were made to be new as I attended the ALCM conference.

May the singing and praying and Eucharist be new to you every day and may you exult in such a strange and marvelous gift. Sing like no one is watching, nor listening. God is listening only to you. Beyond that, who cares what the neighbor thinks?

In joint ministry through music, new every day. Ric

Capital Campaign Update:

As we start the beginning of the building project, making

contributions toward your commitment will be very

helpful to our church family. $860,100 has been given to

date to the campaign. Thank you to everyone who is

supporting this endeavor with your thoughts and prayers! Gifts may be made by indicating “Capital Campaign”

on your check. For information on donating stocks, contact Jim Krueger at 239.454.1605

The ministry and mission of Peace Lutheran Church has been blessed by the generous spirit of the faithful of our church. Over the past several years, the gifts to the ministry/mission budget, the Capital Campaign and servant projects have been outstanding! As the Finance Committee keeps watch over the offerings and expenses, we want to inform the congregation that this year our offerings are not keeping up with the budget. Our giving has been under the budget by about $55,000 for the year. The 2016 budget was increased by $60,000. Offerings to date have been about $1000 over the previous year. We are thankful that controlling costs have allowed all of our bills and mortgage to be paid on time. Our benevolence is also being paid on schedule. As we look to next year with our expanded building and ministry, the Finance Committee knows that our expenses will increase. We invite additional gifts at this time of the year.

We look forward to our fall stewardship programs when we will be invited to offer a commitment for the up-coming year. We know that our congregation has always risen to address the challenges that are before us. We know that Christ is leading us boldly into the future with His love and grace!

With Sincere Thanks and Gratitude

Leah Fuller and Csaba Szilagyi were joined in marriage on August 13, 2016, at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Vero Beach. The Rev. Sally Satran officiated. Leah, our former missionary to Haiti, was radiant and joyful. The bride and the groom partnered with Pastor Satran in writing the prayers and the vows, and in serving communion. It was a beautiful and meaningful ceremony.

Congratulations!

Many, many thanks to Mary Klaus and her expertise for repairing the deacon's stole. We are so blessed at Peace to

have such wonderful folks like Mary who volunteer to help us in so many ways.

Blessings, Deacon Karen

Report about the Churchwide Assembly in New Orleans!

Beloved sisters and brothers in Christ,

“Freed and Renewed in Christ,” was the theme of the triennial Churchwide Assembly of the ELCA in New Orleans from August 8-13. While there were about 950 voting members in attendance, with 16 from the Florida-Bahamas Synod (along with another 15 of our people who attended the Grace Gathering which ran concurrently), I wish you could have all been there to see what an amazing church is ours.

A churchwide assembly centers daily on a midday gathering around the Liturgy of Holy Communion. With about 1500 gathered each day, these services of word and sacrament were centered in great preaching and magnificent and diverse music and liturgy. This was the source and summit of all our other activity which included legislative action, reports from Churchwide officers and units, updates on ministries, workshops, Bible study, fellowship and more.

Our presiding bishop, Elizabeth Eaton, said in her report, "I hope you all go home and tell your congregations that this church is not dying, it is changing.” That is the message that I bring back to the Florida-Bahamas Synod. God’s work is being done with our hands throughout this church. God is doing some amazing new things among us as witnessed to by the following actions of the assembly:

• Overwhelmingly affirmed the “Declaration on the Way,” a document noting 32 principles of agreement between Roman Catholics and Lutherans as the result of 50 years of ecumenical dialog. The document is com-mended as a study resource for the observance of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation as Catholics and Lu-therans continue to strive to heal the breach of the 16th century and move toward sharing the Lord’s Supper and ministry.

• Adopted AMMPARO (Accompanying Migrant Minors with Protection, Advocacy, Representation and Opportunities), a holistic, churchwide strategy addressing the complex issue of minors fleeing violence in Guate-mala, Honduras and El Salvador.

• Elected our own William B. “Bill” Horne II of Clearwater to a six-year term as vice president of the ELCA.

• Adopted strategies toward greater diversity within the ELCA (whose minority members represent only 6 percent of its membership) through intentional outreach and raising awareness of both overt and subtle racism in the U.S.

• Adopted annual budgets for the next three years of approximately $64 million annually for ELCA minis-tries and $25 million for World Hunger.

• Affirmed efforts to support veterans and their families, military chaplains and all affected by war.

• Adopted strategies for positive investment aimed at supporting peace in Israel and Palestine and reduced energy usage and reliance on fossil fuels.

I return from New Orleans thankful to be a part of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and thankful to be partners in the gospel with each of you! Peace be yours, Bishop Robert G. Schaefer
