As we would have expected there has been a huge reaction to the Kraft Foods takeover of Cadbury which employs 45,000 worldwide and a reputed 4,500 here in the UK. Of course, all the speculation is now on potential job losses as part of Kraft’s “meaningful cost savings as a result of the merger”.

If the bulk of production goes overseas, and Kraft certainly has a history of this - the impact on the print and packaging industries in the UK could be catastrophic, with the ripple effects being felt far and wide.

Cadbury’s Chief Executive Todd Stitzer is reported to have said, “They have pledged they will do their utmost to preserve Cadbury’s unique performance drivers and values-led heritage”.

For what it’s worth Lord Mandelson, the business secretary warned Kraft to expect “huge opposition” from the government if it wanted to make a “fast buck” by buying Cadbury. Kraft’s Chief Executive Irene Rosenfeld, was allegedly, less than happy at this intervention but once the company is in the hands of Kraft, one wonders just what ‘sanctions’ Peter Mandelson could impose!

The man on the street may have varying views on the quality of Cadburys chocolate these days and regardless of our sentimental attachment to the brand, one thing is for sure – people are going to be very angry if the UK suffers vast job losses on the back of a takeover deal that has been financed largely by the tax payers bank, RBS.

Christmas fu n at the Races

In our quest to do something different each year for the Christmas bash, the decision was made to go to Uttoxeter Race course on 18th December. When we woke up that morning there had been a heavy frost but after a quick call to the course, we were told the racing was on, so away we went on our coach with everyone in good spirits. We arrived at the course at 11 o’clock with the sun shining and a very cheerful race crowd

all looking forward to a good day’s racing and we had a fabulous hospitality box right next to the finish post.

As is the tradition at the Christmas bash, there is always a competition to be entered into, of course, when it’s archery or go-karting, as in previous years there’s a straight forward competition and a clear winner. So, this

year, in order to introduce a competitive element to the day, we all had to pick a winner for each of the seven races, for

the sake of the competition only (we did actually go and place our bets with the bookmakers as well) and the person who had the most wins would get their names put on the prestigious fc

cartons Challenge Trophy.

We enjoyed a superb hot buffet served by the fabulous Jill, the wine flowed, and numerous bets were placed - some by people who studied the form of the horses and claimed to be knowledgeable and some by people who chose their winning horse based purely on the jockey’s colours or the name of horses. Whether you knew anything about horse racing or not, it was a great day out for all and consensus was that this was the best Christmas do ever. But it wasn’t all over.....

We piled onto the coach for a brief sojourn in a local hostelry for the announcement of the Challenge Trophy winner which was Dave Perry. The sensible females of the group – who knew when they have had enough – went home after the presentation, the die hards in the party went on to the local curry restaurant.

The pressure will be on to top that in 2010.

Since acquiring our second Window Patcher in July last year we have seen our customer base increase by approximately 20% but not only has the customer base increased but the resultant effect on our turnover has been significant as additional gluing work has been undertaken with those window patching jobs.

We have applied the same principles to our newly acquired window patching work as we do with all our work; same high standards, same flexible service and the same approach to problem solving.

It was quite a commitment to sign up to the capital expenditure at the time but we have reaped the benefits 10 fold. If you feel you would benefit from meeting up with us to discuss your requirements, please call David Woodyatt on 01332 850684 or email [email protected]

Window Patching News

We now have all our waste board collected for recycling by Smurfit Kappa

Recycling, from their base in Nottingham. Importantly for us as an ISO 14001 accredited company - we needed a

company with sound credentials for our recycled waste, Smurfitt fitted the bill perfectly. They are the country’s leading corrugated

packaging manufacturer with eight recycling plants dotted around the UK and their own mills in Birmingham and Kent.

As a company, they clearly demonstrate their commitment to sustainable forestry and the reduction of their own carbon footprint and we are happy in the knowledge that they have their own mills where our waste board is

converted into board ready to use again. As part of the recycling agreement, we are provided with a Packaging Recovery Note

for every tonne of material we recycle.

Did you know – ‘Cardboard and other packaging form the largest single proportion of the UK’s

commercial waste...that’s over 8 million tonnes’

How we measure up?

If you would like further details on any of our services or have detailed specifications for us to quote against, please do not hesitate to call on 01332 850648

To ensure we are providing the same high level of service right from delivery into our premises to collection from our unit when the job is done, we have put into place a brief questionnaire for delivery drivers and logistics companies, asking them to score our services, facilities and levels of communication.

We feel very strongly that everyone’s experience of visiting our premises should be a positive one and we also feel that every visitor to fc cartons should be treated in a professional and courteous manner.

1. Are the staff in despatch polite, courteous and helpful?

2. Are the delivery notes usually ready?

3. Are fc cartons staff knowledgeable?

4. Do the delivery notes have full details - address, postcodes etc?

5. Is the load for collection ready when you arrive?

6. Is the load for collection suitably packaged?

7. How would you rate our Health & Safety standards regarding loading/unloading, on a scale of 1-10?

8. How did you find access to the premises – were they easy to locate and easy for vehicular manoeuvre when loading and unloading?

9. Are there any areas - not already mentioned – that you feel we could improve in?

10. Please rate your overall experience on a scale of I – 10, with 10 being the highest score possible.

So far we’ve had some excellent feedback, with one driver commenting on his joy at being able to use our shower facilities as he’s often on an over-night trip when he leaves us. We haven’t gone as far as to supply a fluffy towelling bathrobe and slippers yet….but who knows.

I’m pleased to report that it’s been a good year as far as the quality side of the business is concerned, an excellent achievement in all areas of ISO accreditations and a promotion from machine minder to Internal Auditor for Alan Ball.

Tree Planting Our tree planting programme continues throughout 2010 via the Tree Appeal organisation. We will be having broad-leafed trees, such as oak, ash and beech planted in nature reserves, dedicated woodlands and parks. As ever, we will base the donation on how much waste we produce. We are about to send a cheque to pay for 22 trees to be planted for waste produced in 2009.

The Tree Appeal plants trees to “promote biodiversity, createhabitats and improve the environment for people.” The trees are paid for by businesses wanting to make a positive contribution to the environment.

The Tree Appeal’s Mission Statement“Trees are the longest-lived organisms in the natural world. They are the building blocks of life, providing homes and food for innumerable species of birds, mammals and insects. By planting trees today we are ensuring the survival of species threatened by habitat loss, maintaining the ecosystems on which we rely and safeguarding our ecological heritage for the benefit of future generations.

Working together, we must demonstrate that we are seriously addressing our own country’s environmental issues and protecting our valuable biodiversity. Only then will we be in a position to influence global environmental policy.

Most environmental damage occurs as a consequence of business activities, which are necessary to our needs and desires as customers. Tree Appeal gives environmentally responsible companies a way to integrate tree planting into their business activities and give back to the natural world, making sure that they are truly ‘Green Businesses’. This gives their customers the opportunity to buy products and services that help to make a greener world and a better life for all.”

Taken from the Tree Appeal website - www.treeappeal.com. Why not take a look and see what your company could be doing for the environment?

RecyclingNot only in compliance with the ISO 14001 accreditation but equally significantly, because both the Directors and the employees of fc cartons are truly committed to minimising the impact the business activities have on the environment, each and every one of us plays our part during the working day to;

Recycle all ink cartridges through Cancer Charities

Reduce energy usage – ie. turning lights and PC monitors off when not in use.

Segregation of all internal waste to maximise recycling and to reduce the amount of waste sent to land fill sites.

Once again, we have come out of all three ISO audits being judged as fully compliant with the International Standards - with no NCR’s whatsoever. It is testament to everyone involved, not only those responsible for quality but to everyone in the company for ensuring that we uphold our systems and procedures at all times which is evident in the results of these external audits .

A note to our customers: please be aware that there is a new weight restriction in place in Castle Donington. All vehicles, over 7.5 tonnes, coming to our premises will need to follow the usual signs but turn right at the 2nd island from the M1/A50 island. This route goes around the outside of Willow Farm Business Park, thus avoiding coming onto Trent Lane via Station road.
