Prayer All are invited to pray Evening Prayer on Saturdays
and Sundays after the 5:00 p.m. Mass. Here we pray the
psalms, listen to the Word of God and give thanks to God
for the blessings of the day. Evening Prayer is
usually about ten to fifteen minutes in length. So come and pray…

Each Monday, parishioners
pray to seek the help and
assistance of the Lord for healing, family, children and the needs of
the world, seeking the intercession of the
Blessed Mother. Following the Novena prayers, Exposition of the Blessed
Sacrament takes place. The evening
concludes with veneration of a relic of St. Catherine Laboure. Take some time
each Monday to join in the OLPH
Novena.

REMINDER REGARDING
THE COMMUNION FAST
Please remember that we are supposed to observe a Communion Fast before receiving Holy Communion. This means we do not eat any foods or drink any liquids for one hour before receiving Holy Communion, the only exception being water or medicine. This also means that we are not to chew gum during Mass, and certainly not while we are coming forward to receive Holy Communion. Let’s be sure we are appropriately prepared to receive Holy Communion by observing this
important rule of the Church.
PRAYER AND WORSHIP
GLUTEN-FREE HOSTS Gluten-free hosts are available for those with Celiac Disease who cannot receive Holy
Communion using the usual bread. If you need to receive Holy Communion using a
gluten-free host, please stop in the sacristy before Mass to discuss this with the priest. We will be
happy to accommodate you.
BRINGING FORWARD
THE OFFERINGS
OF BREAD AND WINE If the announced intention at Mass is for your intention, or if you have memorialized the
bread and wine, and you would like to carry those offerings forward at
the Presentation of the Gifts during Mass, please be sure to let the ushers know this before
the Mass begins. They will be happy to have
you do this. If no one steps forward to specifi-
cally request this, then they will select people
from the assembly.
The Way You Are Dressed
DOES Matter!
Please dress appropriately for Mass during
the summer months. Attire that is meant
for the beach, barbecues, boat or athletic
field is inappropriate for Mass and is
disrespectful to the Lord as we offer
ourselves to Him through the sacred actions
in which we are engaged. It is also
disrespectful to one’s brothers and sisters in
the community. Your cooperation in
continuing to dress up and dress
appropriately for Mass during the summer
weather is appreciated.

COME FORWARD IN PROCESSION
TO RECEIVE HOLY COMMUNION If you are, or if someone you are with is, unable to walk in procession to receive Holy Communion,
please alert one of the Ushers before Mass begins.
The Usher will be glad to arrange to have one of
the ministers bring Holy Communion to the pew. Please remember to inform an Usher before Mass begins; do not wait until the time of Communion. Also, if at all possible, please sit in the front half of the church, to make it easier for the minister to come to you. Thank you.

LATE REGISTRATION NOW IN EFFECT FOR 2019/20! Letters were mailed to all families with students in our program with details about
re-registration. An email reminder was also sent.
As of June 17, there IS NOW a $25 late fee for ALL registrations.
We continue to encourage all families with students who have not yet begun religious
education, who will be beginning 1st grade (or older), to register for religious education. We welcome anyone interested in registering or learning more about our program to
make a “New Family Appointment” or to call us for any information. Please remember
that all new registered students—including those with siblings already in the program—must have a copy of his/her Baptismal certificate.

SANCTUARY STEPS AND MONEY IN THE POOR BOXES…THANK YOU! ….when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing (Matthew 6:3).
This teaching of Jesus is lived and practiced by so many of our fellow parishioners at OLPH. We are
blessed by secret benefactors who anonymously make regular donations of food and other necessities,
leaving them on the steps of the sanctuary, or dropping off at the Pantry during office hours. Also, take a
look in the Sunday Bulletin weekly collection breakdown. The contributions put into the Poor Boxes as you leave church add up and are the major source of our funding. You know who you are, but we’re not
sure that you realize how much your quiet acts of charity mean to the members of the Society of St.
Vincent de Paul at OLPH, and to those whom we strive to serve. Thank you and may God bless you!!!

“Equality Act” Grants Special Rights to Some, Denies Rights to Most

The misnamed “Equality Act of 2019,” passed by the House of Representatives on May 17, is considered an assault on religious freedom, individual conscience and free speech by
leaders of all faiths who hold traditional beliefs about the distinction between sexes ― that sex is determined at
conception ― and about marriage. “Persons and groups holding [these] traditional beliefs...would be marked as bigots and exposed to legal action," wrote L. Grayson, National Catholic Register. “The bill, if enacted, would make sexual orientation and gender identity equivalent to existing protections for race, color, national origin, sex, disability and religion under the 1964 Civil rights Act, while negating the free-exercise protections of the First Amendment… This proposed bill would affect virtually every aspect of American society." “Rather than offering meaningful protections for individuals, the Equality Act would impose sweeping new norms that negatively impact the unborn, health care, charitable services, schools, personal privacy, athletics, free speech, religious liberties, and parental rights," said the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB).
Archbishop Kurtz & his fellow bishops sent a letter to the House citing more ill effects of this Act: - Houses of worship and other religious spaces will be turned into places of “public accommodation.” - Many privately funded shelters for the homeless and victims of domestic violence would be rendered illegal, ripping a hole in the social safety net. - Core rights would be stripped from religious colleges and universities. - Houses of worship, religious charities, and religious individuals will lose the protection of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act (RFRA). - Religious individuals would be forced to take part in weddings and funerals that violate their religious

As has been our tradition, OLPH will once again collect school
supplies for those in need in our local community. This year, the
Middle Ages Group will be conducting this project. Below is the item
list we have received. Please pay attention to this space each week,
as we will update this regularly, based on what we receive and on additional requests that
come in throughout the upcoming weeks. Collections for our "Back-to-School" Supplies Drive for needy children of our community
continues through August 11. Please watch for sales on the following needed items:

THE SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM
Baptism ceremonies are held on the second and fourth Sundays of the month. Parents wishing to have a child baptized must attend a baptism preparation session before the baptism; these sessions are held on the first and third Thursdays of the month excluding holidays. Contact the Parish Office to begin the process of having your child baptized.

Those who are seriously ill or facing surgery, as well as those in danger of death, should receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick. Please call the Parish Office and ask for one of our priests.
CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS
Adults who wish to be baptized, or who have been baptized in another Christian faith and wish to become Catholic, or who have been baptized Catholic and wish to be confirmed and receive Holy Communion, are invited to join the process of the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Esta celebración por lo tanto, es la oportunidad para reavivar las actitudes de vigilancia, esperanza y compromiso transformador de este mundo que debe ser muy constante en nuestra vida de cristianos.
Primera Lectura (Sabiduría 18,6-9): Confía en las Promesas de Dios.
Cuando el pueblo de Dios tenía que pasar por pruebas y dificultades, recordaba siempre la noche de la primera Pascua, cuando Dios los liberó de la esclavitud de Egipto.
Segunda Lectura (hebreos 11,1-2.8-19): Abrahán, Padre de la Fe
Abrahán se convirtió en peregrino de la fe, porque confió en las promesas de Dios. Él es nuestro modelo, aun cuando -como él- no veamos a dónde nos lleva Dios.
Evangelio (Lucas 12,32-48): Preparados para la Venida del Señor.
Nuestra fe debería ser tan firme que nos hiciera confiar en la palabra de Jesús y estar dispuestos a encontrarnos
con en cualquier momento.
El Evangelio (Lc 12:32-48) relata que yendo hacia Jerusalén, Jesús va formando a sus discípulos, a quienes les dice: “No temas, pequeño rebaño, porque a vuestro Padre le ha parecido bien daros a vosotros el Reino. Vended vuestros bienes y dad limosna. Haceos en bolsas que no se deterioran, un tesoro inagotable en los cielos, donde no llega el ladrón, ni la polilla; porque donde esté vuestro tesoro, allí estará también vuestro corazón.” Comienza Jesús exponiendo que no existe motivo alguno para tener miedo, porque a Dios le ha parecido bien brindar su Reino a la humanidad y por eso, ante las persecuciones y las oposiciones del mundo al Evangelio, en especial que no se crea ni se piense que la Vida Eterna es lo más importante para el futuro de la persona, el cristiano no puede perder de vista que el horizonte para el cual fue creado, es volver ante Dios para estar en permanente presencia de su Creador; esto es, la Vida después de la peregrinación por esta tierra, es verdadera, real, no todo termina con esta vida terrena. De ahí, que el llamado de Jesús a comprender que no existe mayor riqueza para el ser humano que el poseer en la vida a Dios, supremo y único Bien, pues como dice santa Teresa de Ávila: ¡Sólo Dios basta! Continúa Jesús: “Estén ceñidos vuestros lomos y las lámparas encendidas, y sed como hombres que esperan a
que su señor vuelva de la boda, para que, en cuanto llegue y llame, al instante le abran. Dichosos los siervos, que el señor al venir encuentre despiertos: yo os aseguro que se ceñirá, los hará ponerse a la mesa y, yendo de uno a otro, les servirá. Que venga en la segunda vigilia o en la tercera, si los encuentra así, ¡dichosos de ellos! Entended-lo bien: si el dueño de casa supiese a qué hora iba a venir el ladrón, no dejaría que le horadasen su casa. También vosotros estad preparados, porque en el momento que no penséis, vendrá el Hijo del hombre.” Y es que el empe-ño en hacer de la mejor manera lo cotidiano debe dar su fruto, de ahí que Jesús invite a ponerse a la tarea, de no caer en la mediocridad, pues el cristiano debe perseverar en la vigilancia permanente, toda vez que la correcta conducta moral es la condición de vida cristiana, una vez revestido de Cristo y dedicado a su Reino, esto es, estar
en unión con Dios, más aún con la claridad que el encuen-tro con Dios será maravilloso y por eso no deba perderse tiempo ni dinero en proveer el futuro, pues el cristiano ha de confiar plenamente en Jesús

PREPARING FOR
Sunday, August 11, 2019
NINETEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
Jesus said to his disciples, “Do not be afraid any longer, little flock,
for your Father is pleased to give you the kingdom.” Luke 12:32
Wisdom 18:6-9
For centuries Israelites suffered as slaves in Egypt. All the while, they
clung to the promises or “oaths” God made to their ancestors. Despite
the passage of so much time and despite their desperate circumstances
the people put their faith in God believing he would be faithful and not
disappoint them. God was faithful to his promises. He sent them
Moses who led them out of Egypt after the night of the Passover when
the Egyptians were punished and the “holy children of the good” were saved.
Hebrews 11:1-2, 8-19
The author of the letter to the Hebrews speaks of faith that stands firm
despite many trials, including the trial we endure when God seems to
be silent. Abraham and the other heroes mentioned later in this
chapter clung to faith over decades and generations; they left their
homeland and dwelled in tents in foreign lands, hung onto promises of
numerous descendants, and even died without seeing the complete fulfillment of God’s promises. Faith enabled them to see with their
mind’s eye and with their hearts what God had promised but had not
yet come to be. “Faith is the realization of what is hoped for and
evidence of things not seen.” In that, they model to us what is
necessary in the life of every believer.
Luke 12:32-48
In this reading, Jesus gives us multiple examples of the difference
between prepared, faithful servants and self-serving, unfaithful servants in order to teach us about preparedness. One important strategy he
teaches us for being prepared is “Do not be afraid,” which is Scripture’s
most commonly repeated phrase. If we are not concerned with losing
our possessions here on earth we can store up treasures for ourselves in
heaven. “For where your treasure is, there also will your heart
be.” This is an invitation from Jesus to have faith in him alone, that is,
to make his Gospel our only treasure so that our hearts will always be
with his.

Gospel Reflection Questions…. After reading next Sunday’s readings and Gospel,
take some time to pray on them before you come to
Mass. Use the questions below to aid your reflection.
1. In the Gospel, Jesus says to “be like servants who await their master’s return
from a wedding, ready to open
immediately when he comes and knocks.” The servants are watching for the master. Do you “watch” for God in your everyday life? Where do you find
him?
2. When you look for what Jesus calls the “inexhaustible treasure,” he suggests: “Sell your belongings and give alms … for where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” Pope Francis, speaking to the youth in the Philippines, tells them to “become beggars,” so they might learn to receive. If they (we) are
evangelized by the poor, what “inexhaustible treasure” will we receive
from them?
“You still lack one thing. Become a beggar. This is what you still lack. Learn how to beg. This isn't easy to understand. To learn how to beg. To
learn how to receive with humility. To learn to be evangelized by the poor, by those we help, the sick, orphans, they have so much to give us. Have I learned how to beg? Or
am I self-sufficient? Do I think I need nothing? Do you know you too are poor? Do you know your own poverty and your need to receive? Do you let yourselves be evangelized by those you serve? This is what helps you mature in your commitment to give to others. Learn how to open
your hand from your very own
poverty.”
