Together, the 8 styles represent a spectrum — The Spectrum of Digital Scrapbook Styles. Knowing your Scrapper’s Style allows you to scrapbook stronger, faster, leaner, meaner and get more pages done in less time.

Each style represents an individual part of the spectrum. Having a clear understanding of the major style you gravitate towards allows you to feel comfortable with the design decisions you make. You give yourself a CLEAR path towards a specific page design process from choosing your background paper, to how you add and arrange your photos, edit your photos, add embellishments and so on.

YOUR STYLE Fantasy is where imagination, dreams, inner thoughts and mythos meet. You capture the magic of a scene that did not exist before and build it around your favorite subjects — a character found in an expressive reality. You adore crafting the impossible adventure, a new kind of visual story.

Your style invites you to explore worlds that go beyond your visible reality; therefore, you rely strongly on products that can help you recreate explorative, and often extravagant, visual scenes. This imaginative adventure is just as important as the facts, events, and details of your life history. But you choose to explore it through the senses in lieu of written details.

Because most of your pages start with a real person or subject in mind, your page actually begins with your photography and how well you can capture your subject relative to the

imaginative scene. You invest your time lighting and posing

your subjects well plus post-processing your

soon-to-be-reinvented photos.

THE ART OF THE VISUAL SCENE

Day Dreamers own the art of making a visual scene fueled entirely by imagination.

A visual scene is simply a picture, photograph or virtual environment that depicts and represents a situation, place or experience.

Visual scenes require imagination. You must be willing to commit to the story you want to tell in your scene.

In what ways can you capture a visual scene?



SCENE: EXPLORE A NEW WORLD

Creating a visual scene of a new world from scratch requires close attention to details.

Grace Lee places her subject in the archway of a magical castle complete with glowing myst, floating candles and clouds in the backroom. The subject is wearing a school uniform and a magic wand. Next to her subject are vials of magic potions, tattered spell books and a crystal ball. Notice that the crystal ball includes a small vision of an older girl glowing in green.



SCENE: EXPLORE INVENTION

Visual scenes allow you to invent and invoke new feelings.

Petra De Paepe’s subject is placed in front of a backdrop with wooden canopies, dotted mushrooms and fall foliage. Fairy wings were added to the subject’s back. The subject’s wild and flowing hair in addition to her posture invokes a feeling that her subject is cold and unsettled.

SCENE: EXPLORE IMAGINATION

Visual scenes provide an opportunity to show how children view the world.

Li Li Wee captures a child’s imagination of playing in a garden. The scene is filled with dice, kites, bubbles, butterflies, books, a pail, and logs to sit on.



SCENCE: EXPLORE CONCEPT

Visual scenes can help you share a concept that is hard to communicate verbally.

Li Li Wee’s “Out Here On My Own” visually shares a personal feeling of solitude, overwhelm, brokenness, and courage without requiring a large amount of journaling to “tell” how she’s feeling inside.

SCENE: EXPLORE HOBBIES

Visual scenes create extensions of what you find common and comfortable.

Li Li Wee created a visual musical scene around her subject and her subject’s love for music.

SEEING THE POTENTIAL IN EVERY PHOTOGRAPH

Because photos are the backbone of Day Dreamer-styled layouts, scrapbookers may feel only the best photos will work. But that’s not true!

Conjuring the imaginative scene requires Day Dreamers to look past the perfect photo and see the potential in photos you may not think to extract.

Here are just a few examples.



PHOTO: EYE CONTACT

Kitty Scrap extracted a subject whose eyes pointed towards the left of the photograph. This provided the perfect opportunity for Kitty Scrap to create a visual scene that seems to capture her subject’s attention.

Notice how Kitty Scrap’s hid her subject’s arm using the book. She also hid his shoes using the hay. Layering objects over cropped or hard-to-extract areas can hide a photo’s imperfections and limitations.

Kat Hansen photographed her hand with brush and paint then extracted it to create a new scene around her hand.

Kat’s layout shows that the subject of a photograph isn’t limited to a person. It could be a part of a person, place or a thing too.

Jenna Jaquez accomplished something similar to Kat Hansen’s layout. But Jenna photographed and extracted her son’s hands for her Day Dreamer-style layout.

In this final compilation, her son’s hands is writing on a stack of school supplies and personal portraits to signify

the first day of school.

Don’t limit yourself to Day

Dreamer-inspired pages of just landscape and scenes. Let your photo lead you to uncharted concepts.

PHOTO: LOOKING AWAY

Li Li Wee doesn’t hesitate to use a photo of her subject looking down and reflective in her whimsical thematic scene.

Notice the mix of realistic details (the suitcase, leaves and pail) mixed with illustrative artwork (the umbrella, apples, and cat).

Oftentimes, realistic and illustrative artwork can be mixed

together if the shadows look realistic enough.

The subject of the photo is looking away from the camera in Jenna Jaquez’s layout.

But that doesn’t keep her from using the photo. Rather it sparks an idea to create a visual scene where Jenna’s subject is looking into a dazzling cloud of spirit.

Cast shadows should always be directed away from the strongest

light source.

SUPER POWER

MASTERING MAGIC & ADVENTURE

Day Dreamers may rely on their creativity to build imaginative new scenes, but they rely on the technical power of their photo-editors to transform their sense of magic and adventure into a layout.

Day Dreamers rely on techniques like extractions, lighting effects, masking, styles, gradients, dodge and burn tools to composite their creative adventures.

Composite means to combine two or more images to make a single picture.

In this next chapter, we’ll follow along with Day Dreamer stylist Renee Berger as she recreates three of her favorite, imaginative, composited pieces.



THE MAGIC BEHIND “THE MUSICIAN”

Written by Renee Berger

1. A Lighting Effect is rendered and added to the buildings to lighten the far sides and darken the closer areas.

2. Dodge and Burn tools are used to create a more dramatic Lighting Effect.

3. After the subject was extracted and placed within the building photo, sunlight is added. The subject’s cast shadow was created by duplicating the subject’s layer, reducing Lightness to 0, and adding Gaussian Blur and reducing Opacity. The warp tool was used to cast the shadow off the edges of the photo.

4. Additional brushes were used under the skirt hem to create more shadows where the dress lifted and folded.

5. An Inner Shadow Layer Style was added to the subject’s layer to create a sun kissed look. The Inner Shadow was isolated onto a new layer then masked to remove unwanted areas.

6. Dodge and Burn tools were used on the subject’s dress to create more shadows within the dress.

7. A spotlight was stamped from left to right.

8. A sun spot is created with a large, soft round brush set in screen mode.





THE MAGIC BEHIND “THE PATH”


1. The subject is extracted from her photo and added to the scenic photo. Multiple adjustment layers are clipped to the subject’s layer to change the daytime lighting to an evening look.

2. Soft round brushes are used at different sizes and opacities to create glow around the lamps and give shadow to the subject.

3. Soft round brushes are added at the subject’s feet to imply soft cast shadows and match the overall soft and misty vision.

4. An Inner Shadow Layer Style was added to the subject’s layer to create an ethereal look.

5. A gradient is added to create more shadow on the darker side of the picture.

6. A 50% grey fill layer with an Overlay blend mode is added at the top of the Layers panel to help the image pop.

7. Finally, all layers are merged together and a lighting effect is added.



THE MAGIC BEHIND “THE DESERT”


1. After the extraction, a gradient is clipped to the subject to remove the studio lighting.

2. A cast shadow is added then masked and tweaked with a soft round brush.

3. Contact shadows are created under the body.

4. The flame of the candle is popped with a small, soft round brush. A slight glow is created under the lamp with a soft round brush.

5. A cast shadow is created under the lamp.

6. A warm light is created on the subject’s body with a brush.

7. Finally, a Gradient Map is applied with a black to warm orange to generate more overall light.

Combining Free Spirit style with Day Dreamer style pairs self-expressions and a no rules approach with building a scene around a subject using mixed media-type embellishments. This is called Digital Montage.



FREE SPIRIT + DAY DREAMER STYLE

Kat Hansen’s “Dance Like No One’s Watching” pairs a mixed media Free Spirit style with the surrealism of Day Dreamer.

Her Digital Montage includes brushes, non-dimensional and dimensional elements, stamps, and papers that have been layered together to produce a new whole.

Taken in whole, Kat creates a different kind of environment around her character’s representation.

FREE SPIRIT + DAY DREAMER STYLE

Kat Hansen’s “Who Am I” also pairs an emotional feeling or worry with a scene built around character representations.

Because Kat uses pieces that were already created and defined, her work is considered Digital Montage.

Randomly cutting and glueing torn pieces together to create a new

whole is called Digital Collage.

Shape Shifters own the art of blending completely. Your artistic, and incredibly original, style blends the the spontaneous approach of contemporary collage with the visual language of shape, form, color and line.

DAY DREAMER + SHAPE SHIFTER

Combining Day Dreamer style with Shape Shifter style pairs the world of fantasy and visual scene with the creative tools of blending, brushes, blend modes and special effects.

Adventure by Linda Davis



DAY DREAMER + SHAPE SHIFTER STYLE

Butterfly by Linda Davis combines visual scene with creative tools. In her layout, Linda uses multiple photos of her subject transforming from crystalis to butterfly in a wooded, leaf-lined area.

The scene created around the subject reinforces the fantasy that the wooded area is the home to the newly-emerged, beautiful butterfly.

DAY DREAMER + SHAPE SHIFTER STYLE

Sand Play by Linda Davis combines visual scene with creative tools. Here, the visual scene is a sandbox and the subject has been repeated in various positions using compositing and blending techniques.

The scene created around the subject reinforces the fantasy that the sand box is bigger than it seems.

CONTRASTING STYLE



GEOMETRIST

Geometry is the branch of mathematics concerned with shape, size, position, proportion and properties of space. You see shape in ways no other page stylist can. You’re the mathematician of scrapbook design.
