ST. BEDE; ST. GREGORY VII; ST. MARY MAGDALENE DE’PAZZI

Venerable Bede was a Benedictine monk at the Abbey of Jarrow in England. He devoted his life to scholarly pursuits, including the study of Scripture, the composition of commentaries based on the ideas of Church Fathers, and extensive research and writing re-garding the history of the Church in England. He is credited with educating over 600 monks and popularizing the use of AD (anno Domini—in the year of our Lord) to refer to the Christian era. St. Gregory VII joined the Benedictine monks, but was eventually called beyond the cloister to serve the larger church as pope. Recognized as one of the greatest reformer popes, St. Gregory instituted what is known as the Gregorian reform. Through this reform he wanted to end rampant and widespread abuses in the Church. Mary Magdalene de”Pazzi, daughter of a noble Floren-tine family, was a Carmelite mystic who prayed tirelessly for the Church. (2016 Sourcebook pg. 216) “The Church is not born isolated, she is born universal, one

and Catholic, with a precise identity, open to all, not closed, an identity which embraces the entire world, excluding no one. Mother Church closes her door in the face of no one, no one! Not even to the greatest sinner, to no one! This is through the power, through the grace of the Holy Spirit. Mother Church opens, opens wide her doors to everyone because she is mother.” ~ Pope Francis

ST. PHILIP NERI Philip spent much of his life hearing confessions and providing spiritual direction. He was considered somewhat of a clairvoyant due to his ability to “read” the hearts of people. He formed the religious order, the Oratorians, a congregation of diocesan priests bound by the bond of love rather that religious vows and dedicat-ed to the spiritual well-being of souls. (2016 Sourcebook pg. 217)

ST. AUGUSTINE Augustine led a successful mission of monks to evangelize Anglo-Saxons in Britain. He built the first cathedral and school at Canter-bury, and later founded the first monastery in close proximity to the cathedral. Within the ecumenical movement he is an icon of unity — a time when Rome and England were of one mind. (2016 Sourcebook pg. 217)

Dear friends:

It’s late on Tuesday afternoon as I write this and the office is quiet except for the sound of the crows raising a ruckus outside! This afternoon I had the sad but life-giving opportunity to attend the funeral of Deacon Ed White at St. Michael’s Parish in Snohomish where he ministered for many years. Deacon Ed was 84 years young at the time of his death last Friday but he never stopped trying to serve God’s people. In the last few years, he would put the Book of the Gospels in the basket on the front of his walker and process into the Church in front of the priest at his own pace.

In spite of his physical limitations, Deacon Ed just found a way to keep serving. He embodies for all of us the focus we are called to have on serving the needs of those around us. In my homily today, you will hear me speak about the na-ture of deacon ministry but the awesome reality is that each of us is a servant in God’s eyes. Pope Francis has also embodied this in his ministry to all, especially the sick, the elderly, the poor, the refugee, the immigrant, the imprisoned, and those with physical and mental disabilities. Each of us has the ability to serve others in some capacity and our com-munal nature as the Body of Christ makes this essential to living out our faith.

With my departure at the end of June, I don’t know when you will have a deacon again at St. Benedict but my prayer for all of you will be that St. Benedict Parish continues to be a diaconal parish….a community of servants who have limitless compassion and concern for the needy in your midst. I look forward to seeing the amazing things you will accomplish now and in the future. May the strength, grace and wisdom of the Holy Trinity continue to bless you all.

Your brother in Christ, Deacon Roy

"POPE FRANCIS, THE ENVIRONMENT, AND YOU" Please join parishioner Len Kannapell from the HCSJ Commis-sion for a presentation connecting Pope Francis' encyclical on the environment Laudato Si and how, we as Catholics, can put our faith into action to address one of the most pressing problems facing our planet: climate change. Len will provide simple and practical ways to get involved with the issues - and more im-portantly, what actions you can take as an individual. Come on out and get inspired. Contact Len Kannapell 206.909.2735 cell or [email protected] for more information.

STEWARDSHIP OF TREASURE Today’s psalm reminds us that we have been crowned with glory and honor and given rule over the works of God’s hands. But we must be good stewards, for the Lord will surely hold us accountable for the use of those gifts!

th. Our community will honor our patron, our com-

munity and our faith by celebrating on Sunday July 10th

with a Parish Picnic from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM. MUCHAS GRACIAS! TO THE JUBILEE WOMEN’S CENTER DINNER VOLUNTEERS The Human Concerns and Social Justice Committee would like to extend our thanks and blessings to all the volunteers that helped make our Spanish themed Jubilee Women's Center Dinner a wonderful evening filled with good food, great atmosphere, laughter and conver-sation. Many hands made the work gratifying; from our morning prep workers to the afternoon set-up crew and Paella making helpers to the evening crew of servers that shared of themselves through hard work and conversation with the women residents during the Paella meal. A special thanks to our Chef, Jim Yragui, and to Len Kannapell and Louise McDowell who spearheaded this event. Each and every one of you are a blessing and much appreciated. For more information about Human Concerns and Social Justice contact the Parish office or attend one of our meetings currently on the fourth Thursday of the month at 7:00 PM in the Parish Center.
