Page 1 Hello Monroe County 4-H, I think spring is finally going to stick now that we are rolling into May. I want to start with a big thank you to our volunteers. There are over 75 adult volunteers in our county making everything from club meetings to fun-days happen. There are also countless youth stepping into leadership roles in the clubs and county. Yall have such creativity. Our club leaders and officers made a way for 4-H to happen in midst of chaos and confusion. We had split meetings, ZOOM meetings, and outdoor meetings in parks, pumpkin patches, green houses, the woods, and on farms. We were able to flex with the help of volunteers to hold a county wide project day, something weve wanted to do for several years. You can also be proud of the many ways you found to serve your communities. Members made face coverings, served meals in a safe way around the holidays, and brightened up the days of Seniors living in isolation. So many good things happened despite the challenge. Now, as the guidelines allow us to open up, I hope to see even more good things. I dont want to burden you, the volunteers, with paperwork so Im going to make it as easy as I can. Just call or email me what you are planning. I need to know where it is happening and general activities you plan to do there. You can submit your summer plans all at one time, I will take care of the details. Hello Monroe County 4-H, I think spring is finally going to stick now that we are rolling into May. I want to start with a big thank you to our volunteers. There are over 75 adult volunteers in our county making everything from club meetings to fun-days happen. There are also countless youth stepping into leadership roles in the clubs and county. 2021 Tractor and Machinery Safety Certification

The Tractor and Machinery Certification/Training program has been available for many years to 14 and 15 year old youth wishing to operate tractors and farm machinery for non-related parties (for hire). In addition, Wisconsin Law (Act 455) requires any child under the age of 16 (minimum 12 years of age) who operates a farm

tractor or self-propelled implements of husbandry on the highway (public road), when working for immediate family, to be certified as having successfully completed a tractor and machinery operation safety training course. There are no family or relative exemptions. This law (Act 455) took effect July 1, 1997. The legislature considered and accepted lower age limit i.e. 12 years of age. This amendment passed and was signed on April 27, 1998. This training program is designed to meet the necessary requirements for certification for compliance under Wisconsin Act 455 (youth under 16) and for those youth 14 and 15 desiring training and federal certification for farm employment (Part 570 Child Labor Regulations). The 24-hour program includes: hands on instruction for tractors and farm machinery operation; hazard recognition and correction; general farm safety knowledge and stresses the importance of a positive attitude towards safety. The course will be taught by La Crosse and Monroe County Extension Agents and Vo-Ag Instructors from Tomah, Brookwood, Cashton, Bangor and Sparta School Districts. Guest speakers will also help teach the course. The training will be conducted at Sparrow’s Nest at the Abbey, 17304 Havenwood Road, Sparta, WI. Please notice that this is a 24-hour training program (classroom & assignments). Students are required to attend all sessions. They must pass both a written and a driving exam. The course is taught at a 14-15 year-old age level. Space is limited. Youth must be at least 12 years old at the time of the class to participate. All participants must be physically large enough to reach and operate all tractor controls while fully seated in the tractor seat. Participants must wear closed-toe shoes and appropriate attire for weather and operating farm machinery. All COVID-19 safety protocols will be followed. Equipment and facilities will be sanitized in between participants. Participants must wear a mask over the nose and mouth at all times. Hand sanitizer will be available. Participants will be sent home if these protocols are not followed.

Tractor/Machinery Training Schedule

Exploring 4-H for New Families Adult Edition

Have a minute? Please provide feedback by filling out

this 5-question survey

Beyond the Club You’re a part of something big! 4-H is the nation’s largest youth development organization, with more than 6 million members and over 90,000 clubs. Because of how big 4-H Is, it can be hard to understand where you (and everyone else) fits into the greater scope of 4-H from a state and national level.

Where do I fit? Most members get their start with a 4-H club. If your child wants to get more involved with 4-H beyond the club level, check with your club leader or your county-based 4-H staff to learn about additional 4-H opportunities. Getting involved with your county’s groups or the Leaders Organization can be great ways to connect with new opportunities.

Area Extension Director The Area Extension Director (AED) supervises county level Extension staff and fosters the relationship between state and the county partners.

County-Based 4-H Staff County staff work in the local Extension office. Staff provide education, supervision, and administration for the county 4-H program.

What is Extension? Extension is a division of UW-Madison that brings the resources of the University to people where they live and work. Extension program areas include youth, family, and community development as well as agriculture & natural resources.

Chartered 4-H Clubs 4-H clubs meet regularly, and members work with adults together toward a common purpose. While community clubs are most common, clubs can also be found in afterschool, in-school, and military settings.

Chartered 4-H Groups 4-H groups meet regularly, focus on a specific educational goal, and are open to 4-H members throughout the county. Examples of groups are a countywide Dog Project or a Shooting Sports Program.

Chartered 4-H

Leaders Organization Leaders Organizations conduct countywide events, fundraise, coordinate recognition, and advocate for 4-H in the community.

Wisconsin 4-H Program Oversight Employee and Volunteer Supervision

Did you know? Nationally, 4-H is administered by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). Each state’s 4-H program reports to the USDA annually.

Wisconsin 4-H The 4-H Program Management team directs state 4-H program. State 4-H Program Specialists provide resources for educational areas.

Page 9

Monroe County Cloverlink May 2021

YOUth Matter! Youth lead and make decisions in 4-H clubs, groups, and experiences. That means that the most important piece of 4-H is YOU. As a 4-H member, you help to make decisions and can make your voice heard.

You can help to lead and make decisions in 4-H. Each statement is a way that you can get involved. Decide if you think the statement shows how you can be involved in 4-H at the club, county, state, or national level. Circle where this might apply. Some statements might apply to more than one level of 4-H.

Exploring 4-H for New Families is developed by Heidi Vanderloop Benson, Chippewa County 4-H Program Educator and Ben Hoppe, Brown County 4-H Program Educator, UW-Madison Division of Extension.

An EEO/AA employer, University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension provides equal opportunities in employment and programming, including Title

VI, Title IX, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act requirements.

Which of these leadership opportunities sounded the most interesting? Why is it interesting to you?
