Our work improves the natural assets of

the Grand River watershed. We encourage

people to enjoy and learn from the

outdoors. That’s what we do, and we look

for people from all walks of life who want to

help.

2012 was a banner year for conservation

in the Grand River watershed, with

contributions made by more than 530

donors and the most money raised

in our history! In these challenging

economic times, that’s a real testament

to people’s commitment to conservation,

no matter what their motivation is.

As you flip through this report, take a

moment and think about the many ways

that all of us get conservation right:

clean water, healthy landscapes and

people that care about our natural

world.

Taquanyah Conservation Area near Cayuga is a great natural resource that is

free for visitors. In 2012, the Six Nations Eco-Centre received a $125,000 Ontario

Trillium Foundation grant that was channeled to the GRCF to help pay for wetland

restoration features and earthen dykes. This work is helping bring biodiversity back

and provides a great location for students to learn about the natural environment.

The 47-km Elora Cataract Trailway links Elora, Fergus, Belwood and Cataract at

the Forks of the Credit Provincial Park. It is one of four multi-use rail-trails the

GRCA owns and operates and it is part of the Trans Canada Trail system. Through

the GRCF, groups and individuals sponsor a section of trail to help cover costs of

upkeep for five years. Dr. Sabrina Piombo enjoys the outdoors and the trail. Her vet

clinic, located between Guelph and Erin, has sponsored Kilometre 17.

The Allan Holmes Scholarship was created in 2012 with monies from an endowment fund set up by Allan Holmes, the CAO of the GRCA from 1991 until his retirement in 2000. Many others contributed to this fund after he passed away in 2011. The first recipient of this scholarship was Cailey McCutcheon, a Civil and Environmental Engineering student at the University of Waterloo. Her undergraduate design project looked at the effects of climate change on bridges spanning the Grand River, and her research for her masters degree will be applied to the Apps’ Mill reach of Whitemans Creek.

Undesignated contributions allow the GRCF to address the highest priorities in a flexible and timely way. Allocations from this fund are carefully considered by the board to achieve the greatest impact. In 2012 for example, the GRCA received more than $100,000 in undesignated contributions from the GRCF to advance conservation efforts in several areas. These included environmental education, rail-trails and care of natural areas. One contributor to this fund is Nelson Kraus, whose father settled in Waterloo and started Kraus Carpet Mills, which is still going strong. Nelson is a land developer in Waterloo who supports conservation.

For commercial real estate broker John Whitney, natural areas are very important to the health

and prosperity of communities and individuals. John is a lifelong resident of Waterloo Region

and a geography graduate from Wilfrid Laurier University. His BA thesis focused on linear

open space in urban areas — rivers and trails are excellent examples. He believes top-notch

recreation in the outdoors adds to our quality of life. As the former Chair of Communitech,

John thinks natural and recreational areas help attract and keep tech workers in this region.

Grand River trails connect Waterloo Region communities

When the Ontario Stone, Sand & Gravel Association approached GRCF they weren’t looking for just any conservation project. They wanted to innovate and get involved in an area that would yield long-term, tangible results. The result? In 2012, the aggregate community rallied to raise almost $250,000 to help bring hydroelectricity to Cambridge’s Parkhill Dam, kicking off with the Best Dam Gala in Ontario, several multi-year donors and a target to raise half a million dollars. GRCA’s hydroelectric dams provide a steady flow of revenue for a range of projects such as trail work, habitat enhancement, outdoor education and tree planting.

The heart of the GRCA’s reforestation program lies in Brant County at the Burford Tree

Nursery. This is where trees and shrubs are grown for reforestation projects throughout

the Grand River watershed. Roger Davis has purchased trees from Burford for years. In

2012 he visited the nursery, asked the superintendent to show him what was needed,

then made a significant donation. Thanks to Roger, a new building is going up in 2013 and

a new traveling irrigation sprinkler system was purchased to keep the young trees healthy.

the GRCA’s tree planting program. Roger said he really feels that he has helped us

out. He will see the new building go up and the traveler is a big help to this place.”

The Grand River watershed encompasses all the land drained by the Grand River and is the largest watershed in southern Ontario. It is 6,800 square kilometers.
