Volumes have been written aboutthe Indian Freedom Movementthat began with Dadabhai

Naoroji, Mahatma Gandhi,Rabindranath Tagore and SriAurobindo. The men who followedthese legends - Tilak and Nehru, Azadand Vallabhbhai Patel now occupytheir rightful place in history. Very littlehas been said about a third generationof patriots, men who had lit theirtorches at the parental flame.

It was their mission to carry thetorch safely over the stormy waters oftransition, the terrible bloodletting ofthe partition and the general civicunrest that attends the birth of a greatdemocratic nation. HM Patel is one ofthese forgotten heroes: men whopresided with commitment, care andwisdom over the fragile early decadesof the infant republic.

HM Patel, born in Bombay tomiddle class Gujarati parents in 1904,was educated at Felixstowe, Hamburgand Oxford. He joined the Indian CivilService (ICS) in 1924.

Appointed Cabinet secretary beforehe turned forty, by Viceroy LordWavell, HM went on to an illustriouscareer in public service as Partitionsecretary, secretary of Food andAgriculture, Defence secretary andfinally principal Finance secretary.

After his resignation from the ICSin 1958, HM re-entered the nationalarena by way of politics. He was theleader of the Opposition in the LokSabha during the Emergency. He wenton to become the Finance Minister(1977) and Home Minister (1980) in

the Union Cabinet.HM became cabinet secretary to

the Ministry for Home Affairs underSardar Vallabhbhai Patel in 1946,serving till 1950. He was the head ofthe Emergency Committeeadministering Delhi in the violent daysafter India’s Partition. Patel headed theeffort to rehabilitate millions of Hinduand Sikh refugees entering the city, while protecting the Muslims living inthe city.

He continued as one of India'shighest-ranking civil servants till 1959.HM was Vallabhbhai Patel's closestaide in curbing communal violence, through the crisis of the first Kashmirwar and integrating over 500 princely

Patel was a fervent admirer ofSardar, and a critic of then PrimeMinister Jawaharlal Nehru. He alsowrote two books, Rites of Passage: ACivil Servant Remembers and The FirstFlush of Freedom: Recollections andReflections.

HM then took over as theChairman of the Gujarat ElectricityBoard and was a trustee and supporterof the Vallabh Vidyanagar Universityin Anand.

Following the defeat of IndiraGandhi's Congress Party in the 1977elections that ended the IndianEmergency, HM was appointed as theFinance Minister by the new PrimeMinister Morarji Desai.

He changed many of India'ssocialist economic policies, endingbarriers to foreign investment andreducing tariffs while protecting homeindustries. He was responsible for thepolicy that all foreign companies mustform corporations with an Indiancompany holding 50 per cent stake.

Patel was later appointed as theHome Minister in the administrationof Charan Singh, who brieflysucceeded Desai in 1979.

Here too, he played a major rolein the issues regarding internal andnational security. From 1977 to 1980,he served as the Finance Minister andlater the Home Minister of India.

An interesting anecdote paints HMas the principled man he was. For oneof the meetings of the Swatantra party,Patel had to sit outside the gate ofDhuvaran Thermal Station, on aconcrete bench below a tree, thoughhe was an ex-GEB Chairman. Whenhe was ushered inside after themeeting, HM refused saying hisposition is different.

Mahashivaratri is a festival observedin honor of Lord Shiva. It is said thatLord Shiva married Goddess Parvati onthis auspicious day.

HINDUS celebrate Mahashivaratri - theday Lord Shiva married Goddess Parvati –by staying up all day and night chantingprayers and keeping fasts.

In Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva isregarded as the destroyer in the holy trinity, while Brahma is the creator and Vishnu isthe preserver.

Mahashivaratri or the great night ofShiva falls on the fourteenth day of the darkfortnight of Phalgun (February- March); thisyear it was celebrated on February 16.

It is believed that anyone who utterswith sincere devotion the name of Shiva during Shivaratriwill be freed from sin. He attains salvation and is liberatedfrom the cycle of birth and death.

The day is considered especially auspicious for women.Married women pray for the welfare of their husbandsand sons, while unmarried women pray for an idealhusband like Shiva.

Devotees sing bhajans (religious songs), recite Sanskritshlokas (verses) from scriptures, offer prayers and abstainfrom eating meals. They break their fast the next morning,

Holi is marked by its gaeity and enthusiasm. Afestival that pre-dates Chirst, Holi is about colors, spontaneity and fun.

HOLI, ORIGINALLY known as‘Holika’, was initially a specialrite performed by married womenfor the welfare of their families.Usually they worshipped the fullmoon (Raka) on this day.

According to the Indian lunarcalendar, Holi falls on Phalgunapurnima, when the spring seasonbegins. This perhaps explains whythe festival is also called VasantaMahotsava (Season of spring) andKama Mahotsava (Season of love). This year the festivalfalls on March 3.

There are three different legends associated with Holi. The first one says it was on this day that Lord Shiva

opened his third eye and reduced Kamadeva (the god oflove) to ashes.

Another story says that it was on this day that Holika, the sister of demon king Hiranyakashyap, tried to kill

after a nightlong worship. The Puranas (religious texts) contain

many stories about the origin of thisfestival. According to one, during abattle for control of the universe, a potof poison emerged from the ocean. Thisterrified the gods and demons as thepoison was capable of destroying theentire world, and so they turned to LordShiva for help.

To protect the world from its evileffects, Shiva drank the deadly poison. But instead of swallowing it, he held itin his throat. The poison was so potent, itturned his throat turned blue. Thisexplains why Shiva is also calledNilkantha, the blue-throated one.Shivaratri is essentially the celebrationof this event when Shiva saved the world.

According to His Holiness Pujya Swami ChidanandSaraswatiji (Muniji), on Shivaratri, ‘Let us not onlyworship Lord Shiva, but let us emulate him. He who iswilling to peacefully swallow the poison, he who iswilling to sacrifice for the family, for the communityand for humanity is the true Mahadeva.

‘Poison or obstacles are a way of life. When we workfor good causes, when we embark upon divine work, the poison always comes before the nectar. However,we must never get discouraged.’

Mahashivaratri: the great night of Lord Shiva

Prahlad, the child devotee. Holika, with Prahlad on herlap, sat on a pyre of wood which was set ablaze.Miraculously, while Holika was burnt to ashes, Prahladremained unscathed.

According to a third story, onthis day an ogress called Dhundhiwas driven out of the kingdomof Raghu by its mischievousboys.

Unlike other Hindu festivals,Holi is not marked by religiousrituals like fasting or worship.

A log of wood is kept in aprominent public place on theday of Vasantapanchami, almost40 days before Holi. An image

of Holika with Prahlada in her lap is placed on the log.Holika’s image is made of combustible material, whereas that of Prahlada is made of non-combustiblestuff. On the night of Phalguna Purnima, the log is setalight in a simple ceremony with the chanting of mantrasfrom the Rig Veda; these are said to ward off evil spirits.

The day is marked by revelry and merrymaking.People throw colored powder and water on each other.

INTERVIEWS might reveal what Preity Zinta loves to eatbut LPS gives you two of her favorite dishes...

Serves six

100g black lentils (urad dal), soaked overnight5cm piece of fresh ginger, peeled and cut into julienne strips2 green chillies, split in half lengthways1tbsp garlic paste2tbsp sunflower oil3 onions, thinly sliced4 large tomatoes, skinned and cubed2tbsp ground coriander1tsp ground cumin seeds½tsp red chilli powder50ml double cream2tbsp ghee½tsp asafoetida powder1tbsp garam masalaLarge handful of coriander, choppedSalt to taste

Put the soaked dal in a pan with some salt, the ginger, green chillies and garlic paste. Bring to the boil, stir andreduce the heat the simmer, covered for about 50 minutesuntil the lentils are just soft.

In a separate large pan, heat the oil. Fry the onions untilgolden brown and then add the tomatoes. Stir fry so that thetomatoes blend with the onions. Add the ground coriander, cumin and red chilli powder.

Add the cooked lentils to the onion-tomato masala andsimmer for 10 minutes. Pour in the cream, stirring all thetime. The lentils will now be thick and smooth in consistency.

In a small pan, heat the ghee and add the asafetida andgaram masala. Stir for a minute and then pour over thecooked lentils and garnish with the chopped coriander. Servehot, with tandoori rotis or naan.

Punjabi Pakoda Kadhi (Creamy Dumpling Curry)Serves six

For the kadhi sauce2tbsp gram flour500g soured yogurt1tsp turmeric1tbsp ground corianderSalt to taste

For the pakodas100g gram flour1tbsp red chilli powder1tsp cumin seeds½tsp asafoetida powder1tbsp fennel seeds, roasted and ground1 large onion, finely chopped3 green chillies, deseeded and chopped1tbsp dried pomegranate seedsA large handful of coriander leaves, choppedPinch of baking sodaSalt to tasteSunflower oil for deep frying

For the tempering2tbsp gheePinch of asafoetida powder2 whole red chillies3 garlic cloves, sliced vertically1tbsp black mustard seeds1 green chilli, deseeded and slit lengthways1tbsp ground coriander

To make the kadhi sauce, mix the gram flour with a littlewater in a bowl to make a smooth paste. Add the yoghurt, turmeric and ground coriander and pour in a litre of water.Stir well and tip into a heavy-based pan. Bring to the boil, then simmer, uncovered, for 30 minutes on a low heat. Thewater will reduce by half, leaving a thick kadhi.

Next, to make the pakodas, put the gram flour into abowl and mix in the chilli powder, cumin, asafoetida andfennel seeds. Stir in 60ml water to make a thick paste, thenadd the onion, chillies, pomegranate seeds, coriander andbaking soda and mix well. The pakoda batter should have athick porridge-like texture.

Heat the oil in a large pan and drop teaspoonfuls of thepakoda batter into the hot oil. Make sure the oil is sufficientlyhot and smoking, otherwise the dumplings tend to stick tothe bottom of the pan. As they turn light brown, turn themwith a ladle and when browned on both sides, remove themand drain on kitchen paper.

Dipping them into a bowl of cold water for a second ortwo helps them to soften a little. Add the pakodas to thekadhi and cook for a few minutes.

Finally, in a small pan, heat the ghee, add the temperingingredients one by one and, once they allget crackling, pour the tempering over thekadhi, giving it a colourful garnish.

An international team of researchersled by Dr Prashant Joshi of theGovernment Medical College, Nagpur,India, looked at the possibility that SouthAsians have a special susceptibility foracute myocardial infarction that was notexplained by traditional risk factors.

The study included 1,732 heart attackpatients and 2,204 controls from 15medical centers in five South Asiancountries and 10,728 heart attack cases and12,431 controls from other countries.

The researchers found that the averageage for a first heart attack was lower inSouth Asian countries, 53.0 years, than inother countries, 58.8 years.

LAVENDER and tea tree oilsfound in some shampoos, soaps and lotions cantemporarily leave boys withenlarged breasts in rarecases, apparently bydisrupting their hormonalbalance, a preliminary studysuggests.

While advising parentsto consider the possible risk, several hormone expertsemphasized that theproblem appears to happeninfrequently and clears upwhen the oils are no longerused. None of thoseinterviewed called for a banon sales.

The study reported on the condition, gynecomastia, inthree boys aged 4, 7 and 10. They all returned to normalwhen they stopped using skin lotions, hair gel, shampoo orsoap with the natural oils.

It is unclear how often this problem might appear inother young children.

The plant oils, sometimes called ‘essential oils,’ areadded to many health care products, usually for their scent. The oils are sometimes found in other household productsor sold in purer forms. Tea tree oil is sometimes used inshampoos for head lice.

The suspected effect in the study is blamed on somechemical within the oils that the body processes likeestrogen, the female hormone that promotes breast growth.

The findings were reported in the New England Journalof Medicine. The US-funded study came out of theUniversity of Colorado and the environmental health branchof the National Institutes of Health.

REGULAR naps are good foryour heart, researchers say. Asix-year study of nearly 24,000Greek adults found those whoregularly took midday napslowered their risk of dying fromheart disease by more than athird.

Those who made it apractice of napping at leastthree times a week for aminimum of 30 minutes had a37 per cent lower risk of dyingfrom heart disease comparedto non-nappers.

The relationship was even stronger among employedmen as compared to unemployed men, with nappersapparently relieving some of the work-related stress thatwas bad for their hearts, researchers at the University ofAthens Medical School and Harvard said.

The same conclusion could not be made for workingwomen because of a limited number of subjects.

‘We interpret our findings as indicating that amonghealthy adults, a siesta, possibly on account of stress-releasing consequences, may reduce coronary mortality,’lead author Androniki Naska wrote in the Archives ofInternal Medicine.

‘This is an important finding because the siesta habit iscommon in many parts of the world, including theMediterranean region and central America,’ Naska wrote.

Occasional nappers were also less likely to die fromheart problems than those who did not nap, but researcherssaid the benefit was not significant.

Out of 792 men and women who died during the follow-up period, 133 died from heart disease. Roughly half thesubjects, who ranged in age from 20 to 86 and were not illwhen the study began, took naps.

Some advice to take toheart - opt for a nap

prevent heart disease

SOME CHOICES can change lifeforever. Shilpa Shetty may not be asfamous as her counterparts, AishwaryaRai or Rani Mukherjee but post her winon the British reality show Celebrity BigBrother (CBB) she has become a facethe world recognizes.

The win has catapulted theBollywood beauty’s career tointernational stardom. Shilpa has nowbecome the best known Indian face inthe UK.

While Shilpa has gained a millionmore fans, things are getting rosier. Aslew of interviews and an estimated$195,000 in prize money plus otherlucrative media appearances greetedShilpa when she walked out of the CBBhouse.

The actress has also hired one ofBritain’s biggest celebrity publicistsMax Clifford to handle her new foundfame, while the British government hasgranted her a work permit to continueher work in the UK.

Shilpa is soon to publish a book onher Big Brother experiences though shehas denied rumours about joining Indianpolitics. There are also talks about theactresses representatives negotiating adeal for Shilpa to co-host a British versionof an Indian television cricket program,Cricket Star. The show’s format is realitybased and it will whittle down contestantsto find the best young cricketer.

And then, there’s always good oldBollywood. Shilpa’s upcoming films

THE HOLY spot where the Ganges andYamuna rivers meet is one of the fewplaces in conservative India wherestrict rules on female dress are relaxed- at least briefly.

Women pilgrims say there is noshame at the Ardh Kumbh Mela (halfpitcher festival) - just tricky ways tochange out of their wet clothing underthe watchful eyes of hordes of men.

‘We have so much shame at home. You think, ‘my petticoat is showing, better cover it up’,’ said Manju Shaha,60, from Assam.

‘Here one doesn’t feel bad. It’s thebeauty of a sacred place.’

Several women say the trick tobathing in public - with men - is to atleast give a nod to modesty, by jumping

in the water fully dressed, or in anightgown. Swimsuits are not seen here.

As for changing later on, manywomen have adopted the ‘strength innumbers’ philosophy — many are seenhuddling in groups to preserve theirhonour, unlike the men romping

around in wet briefs.‘You pull your petticoat up to your

chest and change under it,’ said Shaha.‘Or you hold a towel or cloth aroundyou as you change.’

Festival organisers have set upchanging stalls for the women, but themassive crowds force many to getdressed in the open.

‘There are moments when one getsa second of privacy and then onechanges,’ said Gauri Puri, an Italiandevotee. Another said the answer wasto wear extra-large sized clothes.

include Metro and Apne.Shilpa knows the tricky ways of

fame and is likely to take it all

in her stride, like shealways has.

Born in 1975 toSunanda and SurendraShetty, Shilpa got herbreak through Baazigar in1993. The film saw twoother stars in making, ShahRukh Khan and Kajol.Although Shilpa played asmall part in the film, shewon a Best Debut award atone of India’s best known filmevents, Filmfare.

However, Shilpa was laterdoing average films. Herdance numbers wereappreciated more than heremoting powers. Shilpa’scampaigns for PETA (Peoplefor Ethical Treatment to Animals) and

AIDS awareness kept her in news longafter her movies stopped making magicat the box-office. The criticallyacclaimed Phir Milenge (2004), wherethe actress played an AIDS victim, wasa brief interval of hope for Shilpa.

As the Indian element in thefamous reality show, Shilpa wasprobably not aware that her imagewould change forever. The racerow that triggered Shilpa’s winand subsequent crowning, madeinternational headlines withtranscripts from the showhogging headlines world-wide.

During the show, Shilpa wonhearts through her dignified

demeanour, even when under attack. Her show housemate Jade Goody'sracist slurs had caused outrage inIndia and Britain and the issue waseven raised in the British parliament.

Shilpa is later reported to haveremarked that she was very aware that

she was representing India and thatgrace and dignity are inherent in theIndian culture.

Her take on racism wasappreciated by the audience whovoted in staggering numbers (Shilpawon 63 per cent of the final vote)to help her win. Ever the picture ofgrace, Shilpa eventually chose toforgive Jade Goody and asked themedia to let the controversy rest.

Lack of privacy: Crowded changingrooms during festivals force women to

change in the open
