ABSTRACT
Many studies has been conducted on the
utilization of waste products in Mortar andconcrete. The use of waste products for making
mortar and concrete, not only the cost of
construction can be bring down, but also it will
give a solution for the safe disposal. In this
paper the garbage paper pulp along with
quarry dust was used for making mortar and
concrete. The use of paper pulp and quarry dust
was used to replace partially the cement and
the fine aggregate. From the studies conducted
in the laboratory it shows siginificant
improvement with respect to compressive
strength,water absorption and static bending
test
INTRODUCTION
Concrete is the most common building material
for many years. It is a construction material
which consists of cement,aggregate and
water. Many reaserch work has been taken up
to lower the cement content and use suitable
material to replace fine aggregate and the
coarse aggregate.Many waste material are
available in nature which poseshealth problems

if it is dumped in the landfills. Flyash which is
obtained from burning a coal posses pozzolanic
properties and can be used as a replacement
material for cement. These material if it is notused properly poses environmental problem.
By products which is obtained from different
industries produce different waste materials, if
this is not deposited safely it poses different
environmental problem.About 35% of
municipal solid waste by weight is paper andpaper products(wikipedia).World wide
consumption of paper has risen by 400% in the
paste 40 years leading to increase in
deforestation with 35% of harvested trees
being used for paper manufacture(wiki
pedia).paper has alaways been essential part
of our classrooms whether it be taking
otes,handouts,assignmentsor tests,they all use
paper. Paper usage is inevitable in all levels of
schools(pays to live green)
With this background, in this work paper pulp
and quarry dust are used to prepare mortar
and concrete so that it will be useful for making
low cost material

2. R.Srinivasn,K.Sathiya and
M.Palanisamy has made study on use
of hypo sludge for making partial
replacement of cement.They studied
that the hypo sludge cotains low
calcium and maximum calcium chloride
and minium amount of silica. Hypo sludge
behaves like cement because of silica and
magnssium properties and this will improve
the setting of concrete. In the experimental
study 150*150*150 mm concrete cubes
were casted using M25 grade concrete
specimens with oridinary portland cement
and ordinary portland cement replaced
with hypo sludge at
10%,20%,30%,40%,50%, and 60% levelswere cast. The addition of hypo sludge
shows a marginal improvement in altering
ultimate compressive strength of the
cubes. The split tensile strength should be
decreased when the percentage of the
replacement is increased.The addition of
hypo sludge reduces the cost of making
concrete marginally.Finally they conclude
that the replacement of cement with hypo
sludge provides maximum compressive

strength at 30% replacement. J R .
PITRODA and F S UMRIGAR studied the use
of fly ash and hypo sludge in concrete
formulations in making traditionalconcrete. They studied that the modulus of
elasticity of concrete is a very important
property to determine the deflection of the
structural elements.The hypo sludge from
J.K.paper mill pvt Ltd, Tappi district was
used for this study. The cement has beenreplaced by fly ash and hypo sludge in the
range of 10%,20%,30% and 40% by weight
of cement for M25 and M40 mix. Concrete
mixtures were produced, tested and
compared in terms of modulus of elasticity
with conventional concrete for 56 days
water curing.From the study they
concluded that the modulus of elasticity
decreases with % replacement of fly ash
and hypo sludge. The use of fly ash and
hypo sludge produces a greener concrete
for construction.From this study they
concluded that fly ash and hypo sludge canbe used as a construction
3. material where less strength is required.
4. Sumit A Balwaik,S.P Raut has studied the

use of paper-mill pulp in concrete
formulations as an alternative to land fill
disposal. The cement has been replaced by
waste paper sludge accordingly in therange of 5% to 20% by weight for M20 and
M30 mix.concrete mixtures are produced
and compared in terms of slump and
strength with the conventional
concrete.The concrete specimens were
tested for compression test, splitting tensiletest and flexural test.Based on the results it
was found that addition of waste paper
pulp increases the compressive ,splitting
tensile and flexural strength up to 10%
marginally and further the addition of
waste paper pulp reduces the strength
gradually. The concluction were drawn
5. 01. The most sutiable mix proportion is the
5 to 10% replacement of waste paper pulp
to cement.
6. 02. There was increase in water absorption
of the concrete mixes as the content of thepaper pulp increased.
7. Finally they derived that the use of waste
paper pulp in concrete can save, the pulp

and the paper industry disposal costs and
produce greener concrete for construction.
