Winning admirers and exciting audiences, conductor Raffaele Ponti is known as an artist of dynamic personality, charismatic performances, and superb musicianship. Ponti’s trademark is in the breadth of his vision, the clarity of his interpretation, and the rich beauty of his sound. The Chicago Courier News writes, “Maestro Ponti is a rising star, someone gaining international acclaim and attention. He has a tremendous zest for music, an exuberance recalling both the roar and rush of a roller coaster ride. Fans worldwide say that his passion shows. Ponti brings an exhilarating energy level to center stage. It’s an electrifying swagger-empowering and enabling him to pull music from light to darkness and back again.”
Robert Bonfiglio, Harmonica Virtuoso states, “I just performed the Villa-Lobos Harmonica Concerto with Maestro Raffaele Ponti and I was stunned by what an unbelievable conductor he is; wonderful, dazzling, exciting, I don’t know what to say other than “very musical.” Raffaele is Artistic Director and Conductor of the Paducah Symphony Orchestra (KY), Charlotte Symphony Orchestra (FL), Genesee Symphony Orchestra (NY), former Principal Conductor and Music Director, now Regular Guest Conductor of I.K.O. Italia Konzert Opera International, Founding Director of Festival di Musica da Camera in Ripatransone, Italy, and continues to appear with prominent orchestras around the United States and Europe. Michael Ludwig, Concert Violinist writes, “Raffaele brings extraordinary artistry and incredible excitement and passion to the podium, a musician of great sensitivity and high artistry. Raffaele had a wonderful rapport with the orchestra. He has tremendous skill in communicating his musical thoughts and expressions, and is extremely efficient in his rehearsing method. Most importantly, Raffaele approaches the music with a great artistic sensibility. His interpretations are passionate, exciting, and well thought out. He brings great excitement and enthusiasm that is palpable to the concert goers, as well as the orchestra.” Executive Director, Daniel Sene states, “Raffaele is an extremely skilled conductor who achieves great results with the musicians he works with. The orchestra respects his musical vision and responds with great performances. As a result of his leadership, our orchestra has seen phenomenal growth in season ticket sales. Additionally, Raffaele understands the role of a modern Artistic Director and thus relates extremely well with patrons and donors.” This season Raffaele led the Buffalo Philharmonic and Erie Philharmonic with immediate return engagements, and makes his debut as Music Director of the Charlotte Symphony (FL). Recent engagements include the Buffalo Philharmonic, Erie Philharmonic, Rochester Philharmonic, Paducah Symphony, Charlotte Symphony, Genesee Symphony, Sofia Symphony, Varna State Opera, Orchestra di Pescara, Austin Symphony, Siena Sinfonia, Binghamton Philharmonic, Elgin Symphony, Teatro Lirico d’europe, Billings Symphony, Italia Konzert Opera, Utica Symphony, Schenectady Symphony, Orchestra of the Southern Finger Lakes, and Syracuse Symphony.

Program Notes April 12 Concert
L’Arlésienne: Suite No. 2 GEORGES BIZET (1838-1875)
Georges Bizet was a French romantic era composer best known for his operas. He attended the Conservatoire de Paris and won many prizes, including the impressive Prix de Rome, while in attendance. He was recognized as an exceptional pianist although he rarely played in public. After living three years in Italy, Bizet returned to Paris to find that opera houses were unlikely to employ the works of contemporary composers. His career was slow going and neither of his two operas that were performed in his lifetime were successful straight away. After his premature death in 1875 his work, apart from Carmen, was largely ignored. It was not until the 20th century that his works began to be performed more frequently and critics began to praise him as a brilliant and original composer whose early death was a substantial loss to French musical theatre.
This piece was composed as incidental music for the first performance of Alphonse Daudet’s play L’Arlésienne – The Girl from Arles – on October 1, 1872 at the Vaudeville Theatre. Bizet wrote several folk-like themes for the music but also incorporated three existing tunes from a folk-music collection published by Vidal of Aix in 1864. Suite No.2, written for full orchestra, was arranged and published in 1879 by Ernest Guiraud using Bizet’s original themes. It is still credited to Bizet seeing as he wrote the themes and the basic orchestration. It begins with an introduction by the wind section followed by the melody in the strings which is then repeated by various sections throughout the first movement. The opening section then returns to complete the piece. The central section of the Suite No. 2 is actually the concluding movement of the original work. The menuet of this work, the most restrained and emotional movement of the piece, is actually from Bizet’s opera The Fair Maid of Perth and features harp and flute solos. The finale integrates the theme of the March of the Kings again.
El Sombrero de tres picos (Three Cornered Hat) MANUEL DE FALLA (1876-1946)
Manuel de Falla was born November 23, 1876 in the beautiful town of Cadiz, Spain. In 1896 he moved to Madrid to attend the Real Conservatorio de Música y Declamación and began composing. In 1907, unfulfilled by the music scene is Spain, Manuel de Falla moved to Paris to study and compose. There he encountered leading musicians, experienced new music, and discovered inspiration and appreciation as a composer. After his studies, he was given a royal grant to remain in Paris until he finished his Cuatro piezas española. After his time in Paris, Falla stopped in London briefly and finally headed back to Madrid at the beginning of WWI. This moment marked the beginning of his mature creative period.
After seeing Manuel de Falla’s ballet El corregidor y la molinera, a pantomime ballet in two scenes scored for a small chamber orchestra Sergei Diaghilev commissioned him to rewrite it for a full orchestra. The outcome was the two act ballet El sombrero de tres picos choreographed by Leonide Massine with music by Manuel de Falla. The ballet tells a story, derived from the novella by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón, of a magistrate who is infatuated with the miller’s wife and tries to seduce her. Manuel de Falla uses traditional Andalusian folk music in this ballet and at one point he quotes the opening of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony.

Psalm 13, op.24 ALEXANDER ZEMLINSKY (1871-1942)Alexander Zemlinsky was an Austrian composer, conductor and teacher in the late 19th and early 20th century. He studied piano from a young age, played organ in his synagogue on holidays and was admitted to Vienna Conservatory in 1884. He studied theory with Robert Fuchs and composition with Johann Nepomuk and Anton Bruckner and at that time he began to write music. Johannes Brahms heard his Clarinet Trio and was so impressed he recommended it to the N. Simrock company for publication. His reputation was bolstered even more when Gustav Mahler conducted the premier of his opera Es war einmal (Once upon a time). Psalm 13 is a cry of despair and Zemlinsky’s prayer of hope that God will help him. This piece addresses Zemlinsky’s struggle as he was forced to leave Berlin because of the Nazi’s rise to power and his expulsion from Austria. The text translates to “Will you forget me forever? ...How long must I take counsel in my soul and have sorrow in my heart all day?” It echoes his anguish and the passionate music fortifies this feeling. Set for mixed chorus and orchestra, this piece begins with harsh rounds on the kettle drums leading to the clarinets’ “motive of anguish” that is passed on to the upper octaves of the strings. It is not all despairing, however. Zemlinsky soon takes the music out of the darkness and into a light of hope, concluding with a fugue on the words “I will sing to the Lord.”
Daphnis et Chloé, Suite No. 2 MAURICE RAVEL (1875-1937)Joseph-Maurice Ravel, a French composer most well-known for his melodies, orchestral and instrumental consistencies and effects, was one of the most renowned composers of Impressionist music. Born near the Spanish border of France, at the age of 14, when his father’s engineering work brought the family to Paris, Ravel began studying at the Paris Conservatory. There he studied composition under Gabriel Fauré and André Gedalge. Ravel was a rebellious composer and refused to be bound by the Conservatory’s rules of composition. Because of his compositional rebelliousness, Ravel did not receive any awards and was therefore not particularly liked by his teachers. Ravel was a private person, meticulous and precise in his work. He was considered feline in his mannerisms as was fellow Impressionist, Claude Debussy. He used conventional tonality in his works and rarely used the whole tone scale. In his orchestration, Ravel employed the full cast of instruments and placed each note with the loving care of a painter. He truly painted with musical colors and in his search for new and interesting colors he would set instruments in strange ranges and characters. Ravels piano compositions require of the performer substantial virtuosity. Daphnis et Chloé was Ravel’s largest work occupying most of his time from 1909 until 1912. The work is orchestrated for a massive orchestra with approximately fifteen distinct percussion instruments and a wordless chorus. When heard in concert, as it will be heard tonight, it is usually represented by one of two suites that Ravel extracted from the full work. Suite No. 2 is comprised of the three numbers from the third scene. This scene takes place in a grove sacred to Pan (the Greek god of the wild, shepherds and flocks), shepherds and flock, and begins at daybreak following a “night of terror” by pirates.

Lord, how long? will you forget me forever?how long will you hide your face from me?How long shall I have confusion in my mindand grief in my heart day after day?How long shall my enemy triumph over me?Look upon me and answer meLord, my God, give fight to my eyes, lest I sleep in death:then my foes will rejoice that I have fallen.
But I have put my trust in your mercy;
lest my enemy say "I have prevailed over him," my heart is joyful because of your saving helpI will sing to the Lord, for he has dealt with me richly.

The AcoUstiKats are the premier male vocal ensemble at the University of Kentucky. But that sounds too fancy. They’re 12 guys who love music, love hanging out with each other and love to share their music with the world. You may have enjoyed their performances of NBC’s The Sing Off!. They are a mix between Justin Timberlake and Kentucky Fried Chicken. Southern gentlemen with a touch of west coast swag.
They are heavily influenced by the music that is heard around us daily. Being a group made up mostly of music majors allows them to hear one song in a variety of different ways. These different takes are then melded together to fit their unique style. They take a mix of their roots in traditional choral singing and what’s popular on the radio to make a new song that is more complex and more pleasing to the ear.
They have a strong following in the state of Kentucky and across the nation and are very active on social media. You can learn more about them at acoUsitKats.com or follow them on twitter at @acoUstiKats.

Sinfonia Preparatory Orchestra - Patty Story, conductor
Mrs. Story is now in her 29th year of playing as principal violist with the Paducah Symphony Orchestra, and is in her 15th year as principal violist in the Jackson (Tn.) Symphony. She also plays with and contracts musicians for The Serenade Strings. She is the director of string orchestras at St. Middle and High Schools in Paducah as well as the PSO Sinfonia Preparatory Orchestra. One of the earliest teachers certified in the American Suzuki Talent Education method, she continues to mentor students in class and studio. When not teaching or playing you will find Patty at her store, Symphony Supply, a musical instrument business catering solely to the needs of string instrument players in a five state region and to anyone, anywhere via the internet. Mrs. Story is wife of cellist Bob Story and they have two sons, Ted and Aaron. In addition, multiple neighborhood cats believe they belong to the Story family.Mrs. Story considers the Paducah Symphony Youth Orchestra to be one of the most necessary PSO outreaches for the region. A proponent for music education for everyone, and just as her youth orchestra experiences shaped her personally and musically, she firmly believes the PSO Youth Orchestra program will have a lifetime, beneficial effect on young musicians in our region.
