Formulae:

Ages of A and B are in the ratio of a:b . After “y” years , the ratio of ages

becomes m:n .

Then their present ages are “ax” and “bx” years, where

X =y(m-n)/(an-bm)

= Difference in Time * Difference in new ratio / Difference inmultiplication

of new and old ratios

Solution :

Difference between their ages will always remain same i.e. 10years.


2) Ajay got married 9 years ago . Today his age is 1 3 time of his age atthe

time of his marriage . Find his present age.



Solution :

Let his age at the time of marriage = X

9 years = ( 1/3 ) * X

So,Ajay’s age at the time of marriage = > X = 3 x 9 =27 yearsTherefore his present age = 27 + 9 = 36 years


3) The sum ages of kartik and his father is 78 years . 6 years hence ,father’s

age will be twice of kartik’s age . Find present age of father.



Solution :

Sum of ages ofkartikand hisfather ,6 years from now= 78 + 2 * 6 = 90 years

Therefore , father’s age after 6years

= (2/3) * 90 = 60 years

= > Father’s present age = 60 –6 = 54 years.


4) Ratio of present ages of P and Q is 2:3 . After 6 years, ratio of theirages is

3:4 . Find the present age of P.



Solution :

After 6 years both the ratios are increased by 1 .

Therefore , Present age of P = 2 * 6 years = 12 years.


5) The sum of ages of Kartik and his father is 35 years. WhenKartik’s agewill

beequal to present age of his father , then sum of their ages will be 85years.Find present age ofKartik’s father.



Solution :

Let Kartik’s age be X and his father’s age be Y.

Given , at present , X+ Y = 35 yearsSum of their ages will be 85 years after

= (85 – 35) / 2 = 25 years

So,Kartik’scurrentage = ( 35 – 25 ) / 2 = 5 years

Therefore, presentage of father = 35 – 5 = 30 years

6) Thesum of ages of Sarvesh and his father is 46 years. 3 years back father’s

age was4 times more thanSarvesh’s age . Find present age ofSarvesh.



Solution :

Sum of Sarvesh and his father’s age , 3 years ago

= 46 – ( 2 * 3 )= 40 years.

Therefore ,Sarvesh’s age= 40 * ( 1/5 ) = 8 years.

So ,Sarvesh’s present age = 8 + 3 = 11 years.


7) In30 years, age of Kartik becomes 3 times of his present age . What is

hispresent age?



Solution :

Let Kartik’s present age be x years.

Then his age after 30 years will be = 3x years

i.e. x + 30 =3x

Therefore , 2x = 30

= > x = 30/2 = 15 years.

Trick:

In 30 years,Kartik’sage will be 3 times,

i.e. 2 times morethan his present age .

Therefore his presentage = 30/2 = 15 years.

8) Sumof present ages of P and Q is 60 years. 5 years hence their ages will be

in theratio of 3:4 . Find P’s present age.



Solution :

Sum of the present ages of P and Q = 60 years

So, Sum of their ages after 5 years = 60 + (5 * 2) = 70years

After 5 years, ratio of Ages of P and Q will be 3:4

Therefore , P’s age after 5 years = (3/7) * 70 = 30 years

And , P’s present age = 30 -5 = 25 years


9) Atthe time of marriage , a man was 6 years elder to his wife. 12 years

aftertheir marriage , his age is 6/5 times the age of his wife. What was wife’s

ageat the time of marriage ?



Solution :

Ratio of their ages after 12 years = 6:5

Difference in ages = 6 years

Wife’s age = 5 * 6 = 30 years

Therefore , Wife’s age at the time of marriage

= 30 - 12 = 18years.


10) Aand B are 3 years and 2 years old respectively . Their father is 40 years

old.After how many years father’s age would be twice of combined age of A

and B ?

Solution :

Father’s age = 40 years

Children’s combined age = 3 + 2 = 5 years

Double of their ages = 5 * 2 = 10 years

Difference between father’s age and combined age of children

= 40 – 10 = 30 years

Therefore , resulting years

= {1 / (2 +1 )} * 30 = 10 years


11) P’sage is 50 years and Q’s age is 18 years.In how many years will P be

twice as old as Q ?



Solution :

Double of Q’s age = 18 * 2 = 36 years

Difference between P and Q’s ages = 50 – 36 = 14 years

Therefore , P will be twice of Q’s age after 14 years.


12) Theages of A and B are in the ratio of 8:5 . If the sum of their ages is

39 years,what will the ratio of their ages after 9 years ?

Sum of the ratios = 8+5 = 13

Sum of the ages = 39 years

Therefore 13 39 years= > 1 3 years

13) Sumof present ages of A,B and C is 72 years. If 4 years ago , the ratio of

theirages were 1:2:3 respectively, find A’s present age.



Solution :

Sum of present ages of A, B and C is = 72 years

Therefore , Sum of their ages 4 years ago = 72 – (4 * 3)= 60 years.

4 years ago ratio of the ages of A , B and C was = 1:2:3

Therefore, A’s age four years ago = (1/6) * 60 = 10 years.

So , A’s present age =10 + 4 = 14 years


14) Presentage of Kartik’s father is 4 timesKartik’sage . 5 years from now ,

father’sage willbecome 3 times ofKartik’sage. What is the present ageofKartik’sfather?



Solution :

Older ratio of Father’s andKartik’sage = 4 : 1

15) 2years ago A’s age was 6 times of B’s age . 6 years after the ratio between

theages of A and B becomes 10 : 3. What is A’s present age

Older ratio = 6:1

Newer ratio = 10:3

Let 2 years ago , ages of B and A were x and 6xrespectively.

X = [ {(2+6) * (10-3) }/ {(6*3) – (1 * 10)} ] = 8 * 7 / 8 =7 years

Therefore , 2 years ago , A’s age was 6 * 7 = 42 years

Therefore, A’s present age = 42 + 2 = 44


16) Ifratio of Kartik’s age to that of his father is 1:5 . After 10 years their

Older ratio of A and B’s age = 5:7

Difference in years = 4 years

Therefore, A’s current age =20 + 4 = 24 years


18) 3years ago , father’s age was twice age the ages of his 4 sons. After

threeyears, father’s age will be equal to sum of ages of the sons. Find the

presentage of the father .

Solution :

3 years ago let the sum of ages of 4 sons = x

Father’s age after 6 years = 2x + 6

Sum of ages of sons = (x+6*4 ) = x + 24

19) Ratioof present ages of father and son is 8:3 . If 10 years from now , the

ratiobecomes 2:1 , find present age of son.

Present age of son

20) 5years ago father’s age was 3 times of his son’s age . 5 years from now ,

theratio between the ages of father and son becomes 11:5 . Find father’s

Older ratio of father and son’s ages = 3 : 1

Newer ratio of father and son’s ages = 11 : 5

Let 5 years ago father’s age be

= 3x years , where X

=[{(5+5) * (11- 5) }/ {(3*5) –(1*11)}]

=10 * 6 / 4 = 15

Therefore , father’s age 5 years ago

= 3 * 15 = 45 years

So, present age of father = 45 + 5 = 50 years

Trick:

Old ratio = 3:1 = 9:3

New ratio = 11 : 5 ,

that means increase in the ratio is 2

Difference in years = 10

= 5 * 9 = 45 years

So , present age = 45 + 5 = 50 years.


21) 3years ago , the age of the father was 7 times of his son’s age . If

father’spresent age is 5 times his son’s age . Find the present age of the father?



Solution :

Older ratio of ages of father and son = 7:1

X= 3 * (5-1) / (7-5)= 3*4 / 2 = 6
