Biography
Head Conservator with The National Trust, based at Swindon. Began career as a Conservator
in 1988 with an internship at the V&A followed by a position with Courtauld Wall Painting
Conservation Department in 1989. Joined The National Trust in 1991 as a Preventive
Conservator for the Midlands and Wales, and became Head Conservator in 2005.

PgDip Cons Courtauld Institute of Art, Wall painting conservation; Advanced Certificate of

Biography
Worked as a conservator in the U.K., Denmark and Hong Kong before joining the Fitzwilliam
Museum, University of Cambridge in 1984 as Conservator of Antiquities. Since March 2015 has
been the Fitzwilliam’s first Head of Conservation. Chair of the University of Cambridge
Museums (UCM) Conservation and Collections Care Consultation Group.

internship at the Nara National Cultural Properties Research Institute, Japan; ACR.

Biography
Began my career as an Art teacher working with primary age children in the US before
moving back to England to attend West Dean. For nearly 20 years I have run my own
commercial conservation studio in Brighton looking after ceramics during auction process, for
exhibition, private collectors and lovely members of the public.

John Burbidge ACR
AC Specialism Wall Painting/Polychrome Sculpture
Biography
Partner (retired) of London based restoration and conservation business Granville and
Burbidge. Began career working as a carpenter for the restorer Angela Camargo, who was
responsible for the UNESCO backed conservation of the polychrome wooden altars in the
Spanish colonial church of Orosi, Costa Rica. Inspired, he travelled to Florence to study the
restoration of sculpture and then won a succession of internships with institutes in Bonn,
Brussels and Stockholm.

Biography
Director of Skillington Workshop, private conservation firm, since founding in 1997. Prior to that
worked for various private conservation firms. Also worked as an archaeological conservator
at the Museum of London. Consultant conservator to Lincoln Cathedral.

Biography
Following five years at Art School in the seventies, studying fine art and silversmithing, I took a
five-year apprenticeship route into stained glass commencing 1980 at the Fulham
Glasshouse. Ten years working with my mentor Alfred Fisher at Chapel Studio, Hertfordshire
I set up Holy Well Glass, an independent conservation studio in 1995, and have worked at
many of the great cathedrals, churches and houses in the UK. Recently supervising major
projects at Worcester, Winchester, and Exeter.

Biography
Prior to being appointed as Staffordshire hoard conservation coordinator, I was employed at
AOC Archaeology as Senior Conservator. I have been an accredited member of Institute of
Conservation since 2011. I have worked on some of the most important archaeological
assemblages from Scottish sites excavated in the last few years, such as the Viking boat burial
from Ardnamurchan, the wooden lyre bridge from High Pasture Cave as well as the
internationally significant Roman altars from Inveresk. I have also worked on an extensive
range of other object types including social history, arms and armour, statues and sculpture,
also carrying out preventive and remedial conservation for exhibition, loans, storage and
research.

After technically qualifying and a short time at Buckingham Palace, I spent 10 years at the
British Museum followed by becoming a freelance horological conservator (part-time)
undertaking commission primarily for museums and the National Trust.

Biography
Organics Conservator for National Museums Liverpool.
Began career as a trainee with Merseyside County Museums and in that role studied for the
Diploma in Archaeological Conservation at the Institute of Archaeology 1987-1989.
Established the Organics Conservation Section for NML. Responsible for lPM, preventive
conservation, collections management, objects conservation.
I achieved ACR status in 2002 and became an assessor in 2003.

Biography
Conservation is my second career, which started at the Hampshire Museums Service in
Winchester on a one year MGC-funded internship and continued full-time for eight more
years. Since 2006 I work as conservator for the University of Reading which encompasses five
collections with the main one being the Museum of English Rural Life.
