Definition of Packaging

Packaging is defined in the regulations as "all products made of any materials of any nature to be used for the containment, protection, handling, delivery and preservation of goods from the producer to the user or consumer."

Packaging Industry: Global

Size of Packaging Industry Worldwide (est.): USD 600 Bn. (excluding machinery)

In terms of global market presence, Europe is 30%, North America is 28%, Latin America is 7%, Asia is 27% and other is 8% of global packaging industry.

According to the materials used in packaging industry throughout the globe, paper shares the most, 36%, metal is 17%, plastic takes 34%, glass takes 10% and other occupies 3%

World packaging industry has been growing at a rate of 3 5 % per annum

Packaging Industry : Indian The highly fragmented packaging industry is estimated at Rs 8,000 crore. The industry is growing at the rate of 22-25 per cent per annum. In the next five years, the sector is expected to triple to around $ 60 bn. More than 80 percent of the total packaging in India constitutes rigid packaging. The remaining 20 percent comprises flexible packaging. There are about 600-700 packaging machinery manufacturers, 95percent of which are in the small and medium sector located all over India. India's per capita packaging consumption is less than $ 15 against world wide average of nearly $ 100.
