Packaged firewoodFirewoodofferedforsaleinpackagedform(quantitieslessthan1/8cordor16cubicfeet)mustbelabeledwiththefollowing:

Origin(county,state)labelingisrequiredforfirewoodoriginatinginquarantinedareasandtravelingintoorthroughKansas.ItisalsorecommendedonALLfirewoodtoquicklyconfirmcompliancewith regulations.

Movement of FirewoodStateandFederalquarantinesrestrictthemovementofhardwood(non-coniferous)firewoodintoandthroughKansas.Manycampgroundsalsorestricttheuseoffirewoodtolocalsources.

WHY?Firewoodisaknowncarrierofinsectsanddisease-causingorganisms.Thesepestsmoveintostandingtreeswhilethetreesarealive.Then,whentreesareharvestedafterdeathordecline,pestsstayprotectedinthewoodand/orbarkuntilconditionsarerightforemergence.Ifthewoodismoved,thepestsgowithit.Evenseeminglyhealthytreesmaybeinfested.Emeraldashborer,pinewilt,oakwilt,andDutchelmdiseasearejustafewexamplesofinsectsanddiseasesthathavespreadasaresultofmovementoffirewood.

QUARANTINESInteriorquarantinespreventthespreadofemeraldashborerwithinKansas.Allhardwoodfirewoodisprohibitedfrommovingoutofquarantinedcountiesexceptasdescribedunder“EABQuarantine.”AnexteriorquarantinepreventstheintroductionofthousandcankersdiseaseofwalnutintoKansas.WalnutfirewoodisprohibitedfrommovementintoKansasfromcountiesandstateswherethousandcankersdiseaseisknowntooccur,exceptasdescribedunder“TCDQuarantine.”

Quarantine violations may be subject to criminal prosecution and civil penalties.

Additional ConcernsPine wiltPinewiltkillstreeswhenmicroscopicnematodes(roundworms)interruptwatermovementwithinthetree.Treesdierapidlyafterinfection.Nematodesarecarriedtonewtreesby

pinesawyerbeetles(pictured).Deadpinesshouldberemovedandburned,buried,orchippedpriorto

springwhenbeetlesemerge.

Gypsy moth (Lymantriadispar)GypsymothlarvaearevoraciousfeedersthatdevastateforestsinthenortheasternU.S.andstates

surroundingtheGreatLakes.Eggmasses,shownherewithanadultfemale,areeasilyoverlookedonfirewoodandotherplantmaterials.

Asian longhorned Beetle (ALB)(Anoplophoraglabripennis)ALBlarvaeweakenandkilltreesbyboringdeeplyintotheheartwoodandfeedingextensively.Theadultbeetle(pictured)is

largeandrecognizable,butlarvaeeasilyhideinthewood.Massachusetts,NewYork,andOhiocurrentlyhavequarantinesforALB.
