The Shire of Waroona is located in the Peel Region and offers residents an enviable small
town country lifestyle not far from the major centres of Mandurah to the north and Bunbury
to the south.

We are currently seeking a suitably experienced and motivated person to fill the positions
of Recreation Centre Attendant or Group Fitness Instructor.
The positions are casual positions based at the Waroona Recreation & Aquatic Centre,
located on Hill Street in Waroona.
We are seeking a Recreation Centre Attendant to assist in the day to day running of the
centre. The applicant will hold or be willing to obtain a current Pool Lifeguard Certificate,
LIWA Accreditation and Pool Operations Group 1 certification.
We are also seeking a group fitness instructor with a vibrant and energetic personality who
can deliver innovative and effective group fitness classes. Ideally the successful applicant
will hold a First Aid Certificate, Certificate 3 and 4 in Fitness and have previous experience
in conducting group fitness classes.

2.4 Selection Criteria
In order for you to be considered for short listing, you must address the selection
criteria that is listed in the position description (please see under heading “Selection
Criteria” further on in the application package).
Preparation of the statement addressing the selection criteria is the most important

REFEREE AND REFERENCE CHECKS The Council has an obligation to satisfy itself of your qualification and suitability for the

Salary
$39.57 per hr + 20% casual loading
Long Service Leave
In accordance with the Local Government (Long Service Leave)
Regulations.
Probation
A probationary period of three (3) months will apply.
Pre-placement medical
Prior to appointment, the Officer will be required to undertake a
medical examination with a Doctor of choice at Council’s cost. The
appointment to the position is not confirmed until a medical is
completed and accepted in accordance with Council policy.
Police clearance
A police clearance will be required to be provided to Council prior
to confirmation of appointment.
Payment of salary
Will be made fortnightly in arrears by direct debit deposit into an
account nominated by the employee to a bank or financial
institution by electronic funds transfer.
Superannuation
The Council will contribute to the Local Government Superannuation
Scheme. The total contribution is negotiable up to 15%. Salary
sacrificing of superannuation is available.
Recreation Centre
Free use of indoor pool & gymnasium in accordance with Council
policy.
Conferences / Training
The Shire will pay the registration, accommodation and travel costs
to allow the Group Fitness Instructor to attend training / conferences
at its discretion.
Uniform
As per Council policy.
All other conditions of employment will be in accordance with the Fitness Industry Award and Shire
of Waroona Council Policies.

POSITION OBJECTIVES
Ensure the delivery of high quality fitness classes.
Assist the Recreation Centre Coordinators and Fitness team to develop and promote a wide
range of high quality health and fitness programs in response to market research and liaise
with internal and external customers to ensure programs are efficient, effective and relevant
to community needs.
Design and instruct Group Fitness and Aqua Fitness classes to required standards.
Undertake other tasks and special projects as directed by the Recreation Centre
Coordinators and take responsibility for the timely completion of such projects.
The nature of this position is casual and requires flexibility to work early mornings, late
evenings, weekends and public holidays based on the operational needs of the Centre.

implement, develop and maintain both new and existing programs.

equipment.

Ensure the delivery of high quality fitness classes (wet and dry) in line with centre budget
and performance targets working with a high performing team of fitness instructors.
Deliver fitness classes that are effective and relevant to community needs.
Assist the Recreation Centre Coordinators in ensuring efficiency and service standards are

Design and instruct Group Fitness and Aqua Fitness classes to required standards. The
position will also be required to cover classes at short notice.

EXTENT OF AUTHORITY
This position operates under the general direction and regular supervision of Recreation Centre
Coordinators within established guidelines, procedures and policies of Council, as well as
statutory provisions of the Local Government Act 1995 and other legislation.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS CRITERIA
Standing:
Frequent standing is required throughout the day, for periods of
up to 45 to 60 minutes.
Sitting:
Required during the performance of fitness instructions.
Walking:
Regular walking throughout the natural environment of the
Recreation Centre and in particular over many variables of
underfoot conditions, eg. Wet floors, floorboards, lawn and
rubber matting.
Bending or Stooping:
Frequent bending or stooping is required whilst performing
normal duties.
Lifting:
Loading of a vehicle on an occasional basis, general handing
of furniture.
Pushing:
Regular pushing is required in the performance of the duties
and is an essential capacity, especially when using gym
equipment.
Reaching:
Frequent reaching is required during the normal utilisation of
equipment.
Neck Flexion and Rotation:
Frequent spinal rotation is utilised during daily duties.
Handling/Dexterity:
General standard of dexterity is required.
Arm and Hand Movement:
Must have full dexterity of both hands and full arm movements
to enable repetitive use of a wide range of work related items.
Eyesight:
Good peripheral vision and good hand-eye coordination is
essential at all times. All other functions require a general
standard of vision. For example, reading, clerical duties and
the use of computer based equipment.
Swimming Ability:
Must be able to safety enter pool and retrieve a person from a
water depth of up to 2 metres.
Physiological:
A good understanding of different working environments and
its potential limitations, due to weather conditions such as
humidity etc.

Psychological Factor:
An ability to with autonomy and as part of a team.
Be able to maintain excellent observation and
concentration skills, particularly when observing large
numbers of patrons.
Good coping skills are important in the interaction with

Must be capable of effectively handling diverse
emergency situations.
Literacy Skills:
Must have good reading, numeracy, analytical and
comprehension skills, along with good verbal communication
skills especially when dealing with a diverse clientele.
