Dear customers and partners

Welcome to the first edition of PacificLight’s bi-annual newsletter. We hope to bring PacificLight closer to you by sharing our

latest news and achievements, as well as updates taking place in the Singapore energy market and our view on our industry’s changing landscape

Over the past year we have seen the retail electricity market further liberalised under the Increased Retail Contestability Plus (IRC+) initiative, which enabled small businesses with a monthly energy consumption of 2,000kWh to select their licensed electricity supplier, such as PacificLight. As a result, around 13,500 small to medium businesses now have greater choice when it comes to securing their electricity price plans and services.

For those looking for alternative energy solutions such as renewable energy, our recent collaboration with REC Solar has expanded our range of products to include sustainable and green solutions.

We are proud to have been recognised by a number of awards this year celebrating the quality of our customer service and affirming our customer-centric approach. These awards encourage us to continue in our efforts to bring the most innovative products and competitive prices to our customers.

I hope that you enjoy learning more about the activities we have undertaken as a team and find our updates informative. Your feedback and views are important to us, so please get in touch with us at [email protected] if you have any suggestions or comments.

At a time when more and more customers are conscious of their impact on the environment and are seeking access to renewable energy, PacificLight Energy has collaborated with Renewable Energy Corporation (REC), a leading global provider of solar energy solutions, to deliver a new solution that allows Singapore businesses to adopt solar power in their electricity mix.

At a ceremony held on March 18, the two companies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the “PLEdge to RECharge Green Energy Program” which will provide customisable, hybrid energy solutions for consumers in Singapore. These solutions allow customers to incorporate the proportion of solar power best suited to their individual energy needs, regardless of their roof space.

Collaboration Towards Greener Solutions

Encouraging Energy Efficiency and InnovationWith increasing importance being placed on energy management by Singapore’s energy industry as well as consumers, PacificLight has launched the PacificLight Centre of Excellence, which aims to promote energy efficiency and encourage the uptake of new technologies in energy management among Singapore electricity users.

The Centre of Excellence will focus efforts on two fronts: plant reliability and innovation programmes to continue to maximise the efficiency of the company’s power plant on Jurong Island; and retail innovation initiatives, which will develop and test sustainable value-added services for its customers.

The plant reliability and innovation programmes will explore measures to reduce PacificLight’s own in-house consumption of energy and in partnership with REC Solar, facilitate the deployment of solar PV units on the rooftop of the company’s plant and buildings on Jurong Island.

The programme is the first within the power generation industry in Singapore and PacificLight will be the pioneer generation company to include solar energy into its own energy mix.

The program has been established in response to the Singapore’s government support for the development and deployment of solar technology as part of its plans to diversify the nation’s energy mix. It also complements the SolarNova initiative spearheaded by Singapore Economic Development Board.

International Facility Management (iFame) Delegates Visit PacificLight Power Plant

In late September, PacificLight was delighted to welcome a delegation from

the iFame exhibition to its power plant on Jurong Island. The visit was organised by PacificLight Energy’s retail team to provide the exhibition delegates an opportunity to tour the power plant and understand how it operates. PacificLight’s Deputy General Manager of Operations gave a brief introduction to the company and its facilities before taking the guests, who came from across the building and facilities industry, on a walkabout of the plant. All participants found the tour both educational and insightful.

Following nominations from customers, PacificLight has been recognised by two separate awards for its excellent customer service and entrepreneurship, while a third was granted in appreciation of the team’s creativity and continuous drive for improvement.

In March, PacificLight Energy received Singapore’s Outstanding Entrepreneur 2015 award from Singapore Resource Association (SRA). This award is part of an initiative by SRA to support the government in encouraging the growth of small-to-medium sized businesses and inspiring younger generations to entrepreneurship.

The award of SME of the Year in June also publicly acknowledged the exemplary level of service PacificLight Energy provides to its customers. Singapore Business Incorporation’s SME of the Year awards recognise small-to-medium sized businesses who demonstrate outstanding performance and entrepreneurship as well as contribute significantly to society through their business operations.

In addition to recognition for its customer service, PacificLight Energy was also presented The Revolutionary Award, accorded to companies who display creativity and originality in their business operations and distinguish themselves within their market through continuous process improvement and unique products and services.

The awards add to the company’s accolades since its commercial operation in February 2014, which include Asian Gas Power Plant of the Year 2014 by Asian Power and the Green Mark Award by the Building and Construction Authority.

The PacificLight Energy team is honoured by these awards and proud to have received clear affirmation of their hard work and determination to deliver first-class service and innovative products.

Spotlight On

To celebrate Singapore’s 50th anniversary in 2015, the Energy Market Authority (EMA) commissioned an exhibition showcasing the critical role that energy has

played in powering Singapore’s growth since its independence. Entitled “Singapore Energy Story”, the exhibition is presented through a series of interactive displays to guide viewers along the key milestones in the development of Singapore’s energy sector, honour the people that worked behind the scenes to keep the lights on, and outline the plans for the nation’s sustainable energy future.

PacificLight was one of the companies featured in a showcase about the development of power generators in Singapore and the role electricity retailers have in the ongoing liberalisation of the energy market.

The exhibition was officially unveiled by Minister for Trade and Industry Mr S Iswaran during the Singapore International Energy Week (SIEW) 2015. It has since been moved to the Artrium@MCI and is open to the public from 23 November to 17 December 2015.

PacificLight debuted on CNA with a three-part series on “Singapore Business Blueprint” with behind-the-scenes look at its business operation

PacificLight made its first foray into TV documentaries with a three-part mini-series on Channel NewsAsia (CNA) early in the year.

Entitled “Singapore Business Blueprint”, the five minute features were aired over three weeks and gave viewers a behind-the-scenes look at PacificLight’s business operations.

The first episode explored PacificLight’s capability and efficiency as one of the latest power generation companies in Singapore and peeked inside its 800MW state-of-the-art power plant on Jurong Island.

The second and third episodes focused on the company’s role as an electricity retailer and its customer-focused philosophy. Customers Racks Central, Weiken.com and CBM Parking Management were also featured to talk about the retail team’s customer service quality and how the flexibility of PacificLight’s energy solutions benefits their businesses.

The company’s annual teambuilding event was held across the causeway as staff and management

took a break from normal office routine to gather at Le Grandeur Resort in Senai, Malaysia to renew bonds and strengthen camaraderie.

PacificLight’s Recreation Committee, with programme organiser, Fish Camp Teambuilding, put together a fun-filled day of activities that saw lots of teamwork in action. Staff and management were mixed up into seven teams for a series of challenges including “Go Fish” where cooperation, memory and communication were essential to solve the puzzles. Teams were also sent out to complete missions in a challenge styled after the popular TV reality series “The Amazing Race”.

A Day In the Rain: PacificLight Teambuilding May 2015

It was a night of popcorn and superheros for PacificLight’s first outdoor movie screening held on 7 November 2015.

Organised by PacificLight Energy with outdoor movie vendor, MovieMob, movie buffs were given the chance to experience a different kind of movie-watching experience under a blanket of stars at The Lawn@Marina Bay with the screening of blockbuster, “Avengers – The Age of Ultron.”

Pre-screening activities also kept PacificLight Energy customers and their families entertained. Children and adults alike enjoyed rolling around the green field in the popular, over-sized Zorb balls, while others amused themselves with a round of Zorb soccer, their upper bodies inside mid-sized Zorb balls, making it a little bit tricky to tackle. Food and beverage stalls filled tummies with delicious treats and the photobooth helped ensure everyone had a memento to take away to remember the day.

A stall was also set up as part of PacificLight’s Coporate Social Reponsibility (CSR) efforts, to sell cookies and nuts from social enterprises operated by the Association for Persons with Special Needs (APSN) and the Movement forhe Intellectually Disabled of Singapore (MINDS). The proceeds from the sale of snacks were donated to APSN to help with the running of their school operations.

Despite the intermittent rainfall throughout the day, it did not dampen the high spirits or deter teams from scurrying about looking for clues and completing challenges.

The teambuilding ended on a high note with a buffet dinner and a night of socialising.

Social Responsibility is one of the company’s core values and staff are encouraged to give back to the community as part of our desire to be a good corporate citizen. To further cultivate the

spirit of volunteering amongst staff, PacificLight’s Recreation Committee embarked on a year-long CSR programme in 2015.

The activities planned for each quarter focused on supporting various groups within our community, including the less privileged and children with disabilities.

The first activity of the year saw many staff volunteering at the Willing Hearts Soup Kitchen, assisting with preparation of meals and cleaning of the kitchen and dishes. The volunteers found the experience meaningful and were eager to return again, so a second session was organised in the third quarter and a new batch of staff volunteers were able to help with the preparation and packing of over 4,000 meals.

Efforts in the second quarter focused on Beyond Social Services, an organisation that helps disadvantaged young people and their families. Staff volunteers spent a Saturday helping a less privileged family of six to refurbish their two-room rental unit with fresh coat of paint for their Hari Raya celebration.

The last activity for the year involved a befriending session with the students at the Association for Persons with Special Needs (APSN) Katong School. For many of the volunteers, it was the first time they had interacted with children with learning disabilities. Though challenging, the children injected fun and laughter into the arts and crafts session and the volunteers and children alike had a memorable and enjoyable time.

Besides volunteering with time, the company’s CSR programme has also included charity giving with company donation drives including the collection of used school textbooks and activity books for Beyond Social Services and the collection of non-perishable food for The Food Bank, which provides for the less priviledged in society.

The company also supported Ramadan-on-Wheels (ROW), with a monetary donation to the fund. ROW is an initiative set-up and organised by the Malay Youth Literary Association or better known as 4PM (an abbreviation of its Malay-language name, Persatuan Persratuan Permuda Pemudi Melayu) that distributes assistance to low-income families and treats them to a day out.
