This casual meeting involves anyone interested in all types of cars. It's a free event, however it is a benefit for Dystonia, so please make a donation and/or buy some coffee or breakfast to support the cause. It is weather-pending, but only depending on what conditions you're willing to bring out your Porsche. Just show-up whenever you can. Who knows, maybe some of us will go for a drive afterwards?

Cars & Coffee is always held on the second Saturday from 9-11AM in the parking lot of Captain's Quarters Restau-rant on River Rd. Now $5 per car.

Lexington First Saturday Cars & Coffee

Regular time 9:00-11:00 and no cost to attend. Be sure and pass this on to

your automotive friends and car club folks. It will be a great opportunity to

learn about what’s going on with the local car clubs and to meet other auto-

motive friends.

The June 4 will be at Value City Furniture, 2321 Sir Barton Way, Lexington.

President’s Report

In this June’s President’s report I would like to thank our DE Chair Jeremy Miller along with Mark Bos and Richard Darnell for another fantas-tic DE event June 5th and 6th. It was a huge success. I would also like to thank our entire crew (Jason & Jim Miller, Gene & Peggy Hoff-

man, T.H. Morris, Chuck Hicks, and Dan Stewart) for their endless time and effort. But most im-

portantly I would like thank Randy Biery and his crew at Bluegrass

Motorsports Porsche for everything. You guys are very special to the success of the KYPCA DE events. And to think, in just a little over three months, we’ll be doing it all over again! Awe-some. The Club has also been very busy with drives and events here in May and June. T.H Morris and Edward Hessel have already completed six won-derful drives with many more to come. And Joe and Jane Galownia hosted a totally outstanding wine party that gets bigger and better each year. Thank you all so much for your hard work to make it so. There is really something for eve-ryone. 2016 is truly the most active year in the history of this club. Over the past three months I have received no-tices each week from National on new members. That’s twelve and counting. I ask the new mem-bers to get involved and go on some of these drives and events. I assure you will have fun. Our auto detail tech session went well and I be-lieve the club will have a new advertising spon-sor from it.

From National: Caren Cooper was voted in as the 2017 President. I have met Caren and she is a huge plus for the Club. Other offices were voted in on this past Sunday by a teleconference vote. National has moved forward with purchasing the next door office condo to assist in the growth of PCA National offices. And the property was paid for in full ($400k)

from excess funds. Great things are in store for the future growth of the Club. Sad news, Pete Stout, the editor of the Panorama, is moving on. Pete has been responsible for mak-ing the magazine what it is today. But thankfully, Pete has trained an excellent team on how to pub-lish this wonderful magazine. So we shouldn’t see

any changes to the look and feel of it. National membership count total as of May 2016 is 116,611. Only thing to be said is, wow. Porsche AG updates: 2016 sales year-to-date is up 7.3 % over last year. And a interesting fact—Porsche doesn’t build a car until it is sold. The Factory doesn’t have room to store unsold cars like the US manufac-tures do. So year-to-date, Porsche has built in total 22,226 cars and SUVs. Maybe the US auto makers should take notes from Porsche on inventory control. Just saying… For next month’s meeting we’re heading to a complete-ly different part of Louisville than we usually do. We’re heading to Mike Linnigs on the river. So we’ll enjoy out-door eating and really good fish dinners. See you then. Steve McCombs, KYPCA President

2016 Activities

July is upon us as we work through our list of planned activities. For July, we will be travelling east to seek out a few more covered bridges. This tour will take us a little be-yond Lexington so plan on going well into the afternoon. The specific route is still being refined and will be shared soon. This tour will start at the park across from the Blue-grass dealership at 10 AM on Saturday July 9th. For this tour, plan on a roadside stop along the route for a picnic lunch. Bring your favorite sack lunch and good conversation! The club drive will conclude at the final covered bridge and you will be free to select the route back to Louisville. Our second drive will take us through some entertaining ribbons of blacktop through southern Indiana as we head west toward Brandenburg. We will stop for lunch at Doc's BBQ SmokeShack. The club drive will conclude at the lunch stop and you may select your favorite route back to Louisville. This club drive will start at the park across from the Bluegrass dealership at 10 AM on Saturday July 30th. Send me a note at mailto:[email protected] if you have any questions. KYPCA we will be aligning with the recently changed PCA guidelines regarding helmet certification. The new standard will be current Snell certification peri-od and one period prior. This will NOT go into effect until after our June 2016 event. In other words, 2005, 2010 and 2015 Snell certified helmets WILL BE VALID for June 2016 event. September 2016 event and forward will follow the new guidelines.

June was a busy month for the Kentucky Region. We started the month with our Summer Heat, HPDE at Putnam Park Road Course in central Indi-ana. Our 12th year of hosting DEs, along with the continued help and support of Bluegrass Porsche, our local dealer. This year, over 175 cars signed up for the two day event. Saturday morning left us with a wet track, reduc-ing lap times and forcing drivers to learn the “wet lines” around the course. By mid-afternoon though, a spring deluge deluged the track, forcing the closure due to the many rivers running

through it (along with the lake on the inside at turn 4!). Sunday, dawned clear and beauti-ful; mild, spring temperatures and

a clean track gave drivers ample opportunity to run the course at speed. As usual, dinners were hosted at the host hotel both Friday and Saturday nights combining track time with opportunities for social time.

The following weekend was our annual spring pil-grimage to Polly’s Freeze in nearby Harrison Coun-ty, IN for soft serve ice cream. We started with a short drive including our favorite windy road up the hill on Corydon Pike. The next day, a group of us met at Studio A Detailing in Louisville for an in-formative demonstration on auto detailing; the right and wrong ways of keeping car exteriors and interiors looking fresh. A timely discussion consid-ering how many of us had attended the prior weekend’s DE! Our monthly membership meeting was a backyard BBQ held at members Edward and Stasia Hessel’s house. Great food along with terrific spring weath-er. The next weekend, our monthly club activity was a

drive through central Kentucky to Danville, KY to tour Wilderness Trace Distillery, after first stopping for lunch at Brother’s BBQ. What’s a drive in a Porsche without really good BBQ?

I’d like to say this was our busiest month, but July promises to have just as many ac-tivities including the Kentucky Covered Bridge Tour and our monthly dinner meet-ing in July, at Mike Linnig’s: circa-1925 riv-erside seafood joint serving up big portions of fried fish at outdoor picnic tables.

Minutes from Membership Meeting - June 2016 By Dan Stewart, Secretary

Ky PCA monthly meeting was held on 6-13 at the home of Edward and Stasia Hessel. President Steve McCombs opened the meeting with a special thank you to the entire DE staff for hosting the Summer Heat event. It was a great event, we enjoyed record number of attendees and completed PCA Instructor training for 16 new instructors. Steve discussed the details from PCA Nationals. He will submit many of the details in a separate report. The club is doing well, over 116000 members, with a big increase in membership over previous years. He also mentioned that two Treffen trips will be held in 2017. Jeremy Miller also gave a special thank you to the DE staff and all the participants. We will be back at Putnam in September, and registration will open July 24, so don’t forget to mark your calendar and register early. Richard Darnell was awarded a spe-cial Yodeling Pickle award at the event, but he de-clined to show the group his pickle at the meeting.

Anthony gave a membership report, we currently have 276 members, and 3 new members in May. Two new members were introduced at the meeting. TH Morris discussed the upcoming drives. Be sure to check the Facebook page and join the special group to keep up with the excitement. July meeting will be held at Mike Linnigs restaurant, watch for details on the website. Thanks again to the Hessel’s for great hospitality and wonderful food.

Porsche is probably the most criticized success

story in the world!

Let me explain why I say that .

In 1948 Ferdinand Porsche introduced the first production sportscar, with his name as the brand: The Porsche 356. Designed by his Son Ferry, it was not an overnight sensation. It took Porsche 2 years to manufacture and sell

50 cars, but by the early 50s the 356 had gained a following, especially by enthusiasts on both

sides of the Atlantic because of it’s design, build quality and

aerodynamics.

The 356 evolved and got refined throughout the years. It was offered in different iterations: 356A, 356B, 356C with air-cooled, flat-4 motors ranging from 1,100 cc to 2,000 cc, initially borrowed from the VW Beetle, mounted behind the rear axle (except for the prototype, No. 1, which had a mid-engine layout). Speedsters, Coupes and Cabriolets all sported the 356 designation.

Even with all the success, in 1963 Porsche announced that it would phase out the 356 and

replace it with the 901. Only 82 cars were badged as 901s because of a trademark dispute with Peugeot, and the 901 became the 911.

the 911 as a larger,

more practical

version of the 356.

It also had a pair of

rear seats.

Critics were quick to pounce on its lack of focus.

The 911 continued with the engine behind the rear axle, but instead of the flat-4 engine, Porsche opted to install a more powerful flat-6 in the new platform.

This added almost 50% more cost to the car which

made the acceptance of the 911 somewhat slow at

first.

This drastic price increase drew quite a bit of criticism. Concerned that the increase in price of the 911 with the 6 cylinder engine would substantially hurt sales, Porsche introduced an entry level 4

cylinder model dubbed the 912 immediately after the end of production of the 356 (in 1965). Initially, the 912 outsold the 911, boosting total production until the 911 gained its assured success.

The 912 was short-lived because of the 911’s success and in 1969 Porsche announced that the new entry-level model would be the 914 which had been designed collaboratively between VW and Porsche.

This new platform had been originally intended to be

sold as a VW (replacing the Karmann Ghia) with a

flat-4, and as a Porsche (entry level) with a flat-6.

The 914 was a mid-engined, targa-topped, two-

seater

When the 914 hit the market it was not

considered a (real) Porsche by most

enthusiasts!

Because of an internal feud between VW and Porsche, after the death of VW’s CEO (Heinz Nordhoff in April, 1968) and the appointment of the new one (Kurt Lotz, which was not part of the Porsche clan) VW refused to share with Porsche it’s tooling for the 914 and the price of the 914-6 ended up being just slightly less that the 911. The 914-6 sold quite poorly, while the less expensive 914-4

became Porsche’s best seller during its model run outselling the 911 by a very wide margin with almost 120,000 units worldwide. In 1976 the Porsche 924 replaced the 914 as the company’s entry-level model. It had been a joint project between VW and Porsche. In production terms, it was the first

Porsche model powered by a non-flat, water-cooled, front-mounted engine, with an automatic transmission as an option! Needless to

say, die-hard

felt betrayed!

The 924

platform which had a 2.0L and then a 2.5L in-line 4

was developed into the 944 with 2.5L, 2.7L , 3.0L

and 2.5L turbo power plants successively.

Eventually this platform turned into the 968.

In 1993 at the Detroit Auto Show, Porsche unveiled the Boxster Prototype. It got a very favorable response and in 1996 they announced that the

Boxster would go into production as a new entry-level model, the 986. The company went back to its roots by offering a rag-top, mid-engined, two-seater, flat-6 but the die-hard fans of the 911 (by now designated as the 993) were quick to point out that this could not be a “real” Porsche since it was water-cooled!

Eventually the 986 Boxster turned out to be the car that physically saved Porsche from financial collapse. The 986 evolved into the 987 then into the 981 and now into the 718 and also spawned the Cayman which appeared in 2006.

But the criticism of the

company didn’t stop there.

In 2002 (2003 in the US) Porsche became a truck (SUV) manufacturer [big collective GASP!] w ith the introduction of the Cayenne.

Porsche no longer would be exclusively a sports car manufacturer as it had been since inception and for

the previous 54 years. Then in 2009 Porsche announced the 970, a luxury, full-sized, 4-door, front-engined (V6 or V8, or hybrid), 4,000 lb sedan known as the Panamera.

Real Porsche cars should only have 2 doors! In 2013 Porsche expanded it’s model line with yet another SUV. This time with a smaller but turbo-charged Macan …

... but the latest one is the “ultimate betrayal” to it’s

die-hard fans:

Porsche sports cars will no longer have a flat-6,

normally aspirated engine, as God intended!

It was recently announced that all Boxsters,

Caymans and eventually Carreras will be exclusively

powered by four cylinder turbos.

WAIVERS REQUIRED FOR MINOR PARTICIPANTS

**Important update for those planning on attending club activities with their underage family members**

We are excited to offer a variety of activities to club members. Occasionally, minors attend these events and this is good to see because it is important that we continue the family friendly culture. We are all well

accustomed to signing the waiver supplied by PCA national immediately prior to departing on our drives. We also have forms specifically addressing the participation by minors. In the past, we have been

able to utilize the single signature of the guardian/parent attending the event but this is no longer the case. A recent development has led the insurance company to state that unless both guardians/parents of

the minor sign the waiver, then neither the adult attendee or the minor attendee are covered by insur-ance. If you plan to bring your under the age of 18 family members along, please print off the waiver and have both parents sign the document and bring it along with you to the activity.
