Temescal Telegraph Business Improvement District 4430 Telegraph Avenue #49 • Oakland, CA 94609
510-860-7327 • [email protected]• www.temescaldistrict.org August 30, 2016
Dear Public Art Advisory Committee:
The Temescal Telegraph BID has been working closely with the Friends of Idora Park (FIP) for over five years for strategies to improve the 56th Street Underpass. TTBID recognizes this area is an important gateway to the Temescal district and is pleased it is able to partner with such dedicated and committed residents to enhance this pivotal entry point.
To that end, on Wednesday, August 24, 2106, the Temescal BID board voted to accept the Temescal BID as the project lead in the contracts for the Idora Park Murals. The Temescal BID board is working together with the Friends of Idora Park to finalize the draft contract with Caltrans, the artist, and the City.
We urge you to support the Friends of Idora Park mural project, which will help create a beautiful, welcoming and vibrant neighborhood in Oakland.
Sincerely,
Shifra de Benedictis-Kessner, Executive Director Temescal Telegraph BID 4430 Telegraph Ave. #49 Oakland, CA 94609 510-860-7327 www.temescaldistrict.org

Office of Councilmember Dan KalbDistrict One Anti-Graffiti Murals & Green Walls Grant Program
To Whom It May Concern:
I’m writing to express my support for the Friends of Idora Park’s proposed BART Mural at the corner of 56th Street and Telegraph Ave. As a resident of Idora Park, a neighbor to this blighted location, and a father of a small child, I believe this kind of mural project would go a long way to discourage graffiti and minimize the blight of this corner. It has the potential to make this gateway an inviting, community-based space.
This BART column stands at a location notable for being an entrance point to Temescal and Telegraph districts, the HWY 24, and historic Idora Park. It is also notable for it’s utter lack of beauty, maintenance, or civic functionality. Said another way, this site is a grey, dismal eyesore at best that so many of us must walk and drive past everyday. It is, sadly, part of our neighborhood.
With this mural design, a noteworthy piece of Oakland’s history could be commemorated. The community—both local neighbors and visitors—would benefit from having some beauty, color and personality in this space.
I know the members of the Friends of Idora Park committee to be committed, sensible individuals who want the best for the people living in and visiting our city and neighborhood. They have devoted personal time and energy to develop this area, and I am confident they would see this project through with great success.
I do hope you select this project for your grant. It would FINALLY be a positive step for this little corner of the city.
Thank you,
Frank Marquardt579 Aileen StreetOakland, CA 94609
