Kate Toney is a BERNINA Event Team Member living in Orlando, Florida. At 18 years of age, Kate got her first sewing machine; armed with little more than an old book and a passion for handmade items, she set out to teach herself to sew. Six years later while on vacation in Australia, Kate would sit down at a BERNINA and be taught to piece her first quilt block. From that moment on she was hooked! Kate left her job as a hairstylist and started working for a local quilt shop where she quickly fell in love with BERNINA machines. Teaching everything from kids’ classes to long arm quilting, Kate found her true passion in educating and helping women feel confident in their skills. Kate’s favorite class to teach is I Love My 880 because of the joy she sees on the machine owner’s faces when they see how easy and amazing their B 880 PLUS really is! In her spare time, Kate continues her passion for supporting and encouraging creative women via her podcast and online community, the Creative Women’s League. Kate provides social media and branding education for small business owners all over the world to ensure they can effortlessly reach their perfect customers. The weekly podcast has allowed Kate the chance to interview some of the sewing world’s biggest talents and helped her create a world wide community around the awesome truth that #CreativeWomenRock!

MITTENS FROM RECYCLED WOOL SWEATERS with Nancy Austin Just in time for Christmas gifting..... Do you want to make yourself and the people you love the warmest mittens you will ever wear? This class is for you. These mittens are made in one class and you will be using old wool sweaters that have been washed and felted. Felted wool does not unravel when working with it. The mittens are lined in soft fleece. “Accidently” shrink up one of your 100% wool sweaters or visit the thrift shop to get a sweater or two. Price of the class includes the pattern. Sewing machine required. Each pair of mittens uses three small coordinating pieces of wool. Class members can trade pieces, if desired. Teacher will also bring her stash of felted sweaters. Note: If felting a sweater is too intimidating for you, a “pick your own pieces” kit of felted wool sweater pieces will be available from the teacher for $5. Saturday, December 1 10 am - 1 pm $30.00

Upcoming Classes...at the Patch

ONE BLOCK WONDER with Jackie O’Brien Join Jackie for a creative journey learning to make a kaleidoscope block using One fabric, One Shape, for One-of-a-Kind Quilt! In this class you will learn to: Identify and cut 6 fabric repeats Align the repeats Cut equilateral triangles Sew the hexagon blocks Sort the blocks by predominate color Design with the hexagons Sew the quilt top together Finish the edges The blocks are made from one fabric with very little waste! You cut and sew equilateral triangles forming hexagons and then design with these kaleidoscopic blocks. There are NO “Y” seams. This is similar to but not Stack-n-Whack!

Because this quilt features one repeated block, design merely involves playing with the colors and shapes in any way you choose. The quilt you produce will have more energy and movement than the original fabric. The amount of fabric required is 6 repeats of fabric for the blocks or you may choose to use a panel. When using panels, 7 panels are needed, 6 for the repeats and the 7th panel to place on the front with hexagons designed around the panel. Saturdays: October 27 and November 17 10am - 2pm Fee: $60.00

JELLY ROLL RUG CLASS with Ruthann Stilwell Make a rug from a 42 strip jelly roll. It’s great fun to make this rug to accent a room in your home or make it with fall or Christmas fabrics. Once you learn the technique you can make table runners, placemats, chair pads, etc. Come join the fun! Mondays: October 22 & 29 10 - 1:30pm $38.00

The Marcellus MODERN Quilt Club (MMQC) hosted Rochester-area contemporary quilt artist, Pat Pauly, on Saturday, September 8th. Slash and Burn: Techniques for Improvisational Design helped members hone their skills in improv cutting, piecing and design. Each person brought two strip sets in different but complementary colorways, which were a springboard to designing a totally new abstract contemporary quilt. This was the latest in a series of workshops for MMQC to explore non-traditional quilting techniques.

MMQC meets on the second

Sunday of the month at 1pm
