3rd Grade ~ Mrs. Finley

Hello from 3rd grade! You may have noticed a flutaphone and music folder in your child’s book bag. Please make sure your child returns them to his/her book bag after practicing the music lesson of the week. They need these every Monday for mu-sic class.

Please notice that we have no school this Friday due to a workshop the teachers will be attending.

Next Friday, November 1st is our PCA Open House. The boys and girls will perform a couple of songs they have been practicing in chapel/music. In addition, you can see projects and work that your children have done at school. Please come, and invite people to come that night.

This week in Bible, we are learning how Jesus shows us how to build our lives (on the Rock). Corrie ten Boom learned how to do this from her father, who prayed and read from the Bible at meals every day with his family. This strong foundation of faith helped to sustain them when they were imprisoned for helping to hide Jews dur-ing WWII. Our memory verse test (Matthew 7:24, 25) has been moved to tomorrow (Wed). The new verse will be given on Thursday to be said next week on November 1st. It will be the next two verses in Matthew 7 (v. 26, 27).

Spelling List 9 will be tested on this Thursday, since we have no school on Fri-day.

In math, we will learn how to count by half-dollars and how to divide by five. Then we have a review lesson on Wed. and a test on Thursday.

We will review our chapter on nouns in English tomorrow and take a test on Wednesday.

We watched an amazing video on plants on Monday. Today we reviewed our plant chapter in science (ch. 2), and tomorrow we will test over it. We have looked through a magnifying lens at some beautiful moss (grown from spores) that Liliana brought in and some that Sarah Freeman found at recess growing on tree bark. Thank you, Liliana and Sarah! Liliana also found a wonderful mushroom at recess, which we are using in an experiment about spores. In addition, we planted some po-tatoes and have 3 types of plant cuttings placed in water to sprout roots. Learning about God’s creation is so much fun!

2nd Grade ~ Miss Luft

We will learn about Ruth this week in Bible class. We will see how she was loyal to her

mother-in-law and how she cared for her. Our verse this week is Ruth 1:16a: “Where you go I will

go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.” We will

recite this verse on Thursday, since there is no school on Friday.

Spelling test 9 will also be on Thursday. We will be working on chart 11 special sounds this

week in Phonics class. In math class this week we will be learning how to tell time to quarter past

the hour and quarter ‘til the hour. We will also start 3 digit addition. In English class we will be

starting a new unit on verbs.

Continue to work hard on learning those addition and subtraction facts. Math is so much

easier when you know your facts. Don’t forget to keep reading for Book-It!

Spelling: Spelling List 7 Test is Monday.

drives.

Literature: We enjoyed a Laura Ingalls Wilder piece this week in fifth grade. Fifth graders are preparing

a fun characterization for the class on Thursday. In this exercise they pretend that they are a character

from our unit who is lost from their story. The class must decide where he or she belongs. Sixth graders

have been working on some rhymed poetry. One was the basis for the folk song “Oh, Suzanna.”

Science:

5/6th Graders are testing over chapter 2 sections 2.1-2.6 tomorrow. We reviewed today in class.

7/8th Graders are testing over physics on Thursday. Students should have cards to use for their proofs.

History: 5/6th graders are studying the plains area of the United States.

7/8th graders fell a little behind last week, so we have been reviewing the war. Students will finish

quizzing over the Revolutionary Period by tomorrow, and we will move on to the Constitution Class.

4th Grade ~ Mrs. Odell

We will be memorizing/singing Psalm 139:1-14. Please read this with your child. It holds such precious truths. God is omnipresent and omniscient and omnipotent, and every child is so special to Him-- beautiful! We are also learning Colossians 1:15-17 – “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities: all things were created by Him and for Him. He is before all things and in Him all things hold together.”

We will be working on double digit division and more measurements – both standard and met-ric in math. We will be testing over chapters 5 and 6, and then we’ll be starting the Great Awakening in history. We are finishing friendly letters and will be learning about verbs in language. We’re finishing plants in science and beginning the marvelous world of birds! We are testing on list 9 in spelling Wednesday.

Please have your child finish their reading for the month of October to earn their Book-It re-wards.

I would like to meet with you for a parent/teacher conference. If you have not signed up, please contact me for a convenient time. Thanks!

Have a great week as you minister to your family, church, and community!

We have finished all of the short stories in our literature text and took the big test today. Now

we will begin a marvelous novella in our text, The Forgotten Door. This novella is a great alle-

gory and will further our understanding of symbolism.

In grammar we are studying pronouns, and in composition we are finishing our original short

stories. The second draft is due Thursday, and the final story is due on Friday, Nov. 1.
