Vintage Valentine’s Card Display at Milton Library
Take a minute to stop by the Milton-Union Public Library to see a partial display of library
staff member Dori Mort’s wonderful vintage Valentine’s Day card collection.
Dori says, “A while back I found the box of them sitting on a shelf in the house, and asked
my mother what they were. She explained they were my Grandpa Bob’s Valentine’s that he
had been given when he was little, that he had saved and passed on to her. A few of them are
handmade, from Grandpa to his mother, as well. Some have the date on the back but many
are undated, so I estimate they are mostly from when my grandfather was 8-12 years old, dur-
ing the mid-1920s to early 1930s.”
We hope you’ll enjoy seeing Dori’s unique and whimsical Valentine’s Day card collection,
and thank her for sharing them with library visitors.
The library is located at 560 S. Main St., West Milton.
Dori Mort is pictured with some of her
vintage Valentine’s Day card display.

Valley Echoesby Gary Godfrey
Will Return Soon
Is the H&R Block
Commercial Correct? Do Americans really overpay their taxes by one billion dollars?
Many of us have seen the commercial series that is meant to be so
shocking that we may not think it could possibly be true.
H&R Block claims Americans overpaid by $1 billion in taxes last
year. This is enough for a stack of five hundred dollars to be placed
on every seat of every NFL stadium (one on each of two million seats
in the 32 professional football stadiums).
They claim this billion comes partly from the 56 million Americans
who will do their taxes on their own this year. H&R Block estimates
11 million of those could contain errors that leave money on the table.
From our experience, and the experience of most tax professionals,
this one billion dollar amount is on the low side. The ad claims those
who prepare their own tax returns normally overpay their taxes by
more than $500 per return. At least the ad’s not claiming that, “Friends
don’t let friends use TurboTax!”
But these are all just gross averages: the individual circumstance
of each tax return determines the potential for overpayment of taxes.
And then there's the fact that doing taxes is quite a time-consuming
chore and a cause for some stress-related headaches. Some people
hate the process of filing their taxes. Even if you don’t hate the process,
you may not particularly enjoy it. It's boring, and there are always
better ways to spend a weekend.
“Why not spend a little money with a qualified tax professional (a
couple hundred dollars) and possibly receive a very nice return on that
investment,” says Carl Towe, CPA, CMI, of Towe & Associates – Tax
Solutions, located at 415 S. Miami St., West Milton. He can be con-
tacted at 937-698-7086 (office); 937-620-9694 (cell); email:
[email protected]; and website: www.towetax.com.
