  • Brochure ProjectDescription: Salt Lake Department of Tourism, asked me to design a full-color, folding brochure to help promote their number one visited site in Salt Lake City, Temple Square. They also wanted me to design a logo and provide information about Temple Square.

    Date:March 28, 2015

    Course/Instructor:Comm130 Section 13 / Julie Peterson

Program(s)/Tools:I used Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign, Microsoft Word, and SnagIt to complete this project. All text copy was first typed in Microsoft Ward and then copied into Adobe InDesign.

Objectives:Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure. Incorporate quality images with one clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the image. Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs, headers, and sub headers.

Process:The brochure design is broken into four primary panels, Front, Front Inside, Back, and

Back Inside. I laid out a tri-fold grid on both pages, adjusting for fold space (this took a little bit of time

experimenting). I then added horizontal grid lines breaking the pages into thirds. Each

panel will be described below in detail. After the brochure was finished, I used SnagIt to capture the panel information for this blogsite.

Panel Front I used an 1889 image of Temple Square to represent my historic theme for this panel. Using InDesign, I placed the 1889 image in a rectangle placeholder, used the color of the 1889 images sky as the fill color for the upper background, and the color of the street as the fill color for the lower background. Using the directional feather feature blended panel background. Using Illustrator I created Salt Lake Dept. of Tourism logo. The logo is designed to be easy to manipulate and work with any background color. The logo lettering can be changed to contrast the background.

Panel Front Inside Using InDesign, I placed the 1889 image of Temple Square as the background. I changed the opacity of the background to 22%. I added a rectangle and oval placeholder then imported the Christus and Tabernacle images. After this I added the text both created in Word.

Panel Back Using InDesign, I placed a high-res poster image of meet the Mormons near the bottom, an image of the Joseph Smith memorial building near the top, and text about the movie in the Legacy theatre.

Panel Back Inside Using Photoshop I extracted and masked a hi-res Temple Square image map. I added a feathered rectangle with complimentary colors to the top portion. Then added Sister Missionaries picture and text to support images.

They come from all parts of the world to voluntarily serve for 18 months without any pay. They are supported nancially by their personal savings and families back home. They assist visitors with answers about Temple Square and the Mormon Faith in the language of the visitor. Sister missionaries are easy to nd, they are the young women with smiles on the faces and name tags that begin with Sister.

  • Web Page ProjectDescription: A potential employer requested a web page to designed for their review showing one of my logo designs. They also wanted me to include my logo design process as well.

    Date:March 14, 2015

    Course/Instructor:

    Comm130 Section 13 / Julie Peterson

Program(s)/Tools:I modified my web design code using Notepad++ by GNU. I used Adobe Illustrator to modify and export a Logo that I created in my Logo Project.

Objectives:Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so the long side is 300 500 pixels. Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience. (Minimum of 200 words. Acquire a working knowledge of HTML. Acquire a working knowledge of CSS.

Process:In Adobe Illustrator I used the selection tool to select and resize the first logo from my Logos Project to 500px on the long side and saved it as a PNG file format. I used the eyedropper tool to capture logo image color codes that

would use in my CSS color codes.

Using Notepad++ I modified the demo.css html to match the color

scheme used in the logo. I also added a horizontal rule (HR) section and played around

with font shadowing. I then modified the activity.html code to include the new CSS file. I updated the verbiage to describe my logo design and placed horizontal lines to separate the header, body, and footer.

  • Event Ad ProjectDescription: Create an ad for a local company, who is sponsoring a benefit event for the benefactor of my choice. I chose a fictitious event for a real local business. The scanned image came from the Ensign. The title of my Fundraiser is Tornado Relief Dinner and a Movie. All major images are scanned.

    Date:January 31, 2015

    Course/Instructor:Comm130 Section 13 / Julie Peterson

Program(s)/Tools:The tools used for this assignment were my Canon MG7120 scanner/inkjet printer, Adobe Photoshop, Techsmiths SnagIt, and Microsoft Word version 13.

Objectives:Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches work together). Find, scan and import a high-quality image. Create a full-bleed design. Learn to use only Word design features without using any Adobe programs, including Adobe Photoshop.

Process:I used the scanner/printer to capture the image using a descreen filter and at the end print edge-to-edge on Photo Glossy paper. I

used Photoshop to crop and resize my scanned image. I used SnagIts eyedropper feature the scanned

image to derive the background, bar, and copy text colors for the ad. I used my initial paper

sketches to organize my event ad in Word. I used the background color feature of Word to give me the edge-to-edge effect required on this assignment. I flipped the scanned picture of Christ horizontally to set his focus on the center/right of the page. I obtained permission from the instructor to include a small downloaded logo from The Old Spaghetti Factory, giving the ad a sense of realism. I aligned the picture of Christ to the movie title at .3 inches from the left of the page. I aligned left edge of the event title, copy text and logo. I right aligned the date and place information to the picture of Christ. Additionally, I middle aligned the date and place with the logo. I used blue bars as repletion to separate the movie title from the top and bottom sections. I used asymmetry by laying the logo just a little over the edge of the bar, giving the illusion of depth. I used contrasting fonts and colors, with the brighter colors to denote importance. I arranged white space in three corners of the ad to draw the audiences focus to the image of Christ and the words The Life of Christ.

  • Tornado Relief Dinner and a Movie The Old Spaghetti Factory is hosting a Tornado Relief Fundraiser for victims of last months South Jordon Tornadoes, all proceeds will be donated to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Humanitarian Relief in support of this disaster. Additional donations will be accepted..

Doors will open at 6pm, dinner will start at 6:30 and the movie will start at 7:30pm.

  • Photo Design ProjectDescription:In this project I have applied for a job with a company that is looking for someone who knows photography and how to design in Photoshop. They requested a sample of my work and a full-bleed, 8.5 by 11, photo design project that included an original, new, quality image, a consistent color scheme based on that image, some text, and a few design elements. The lower image is the Original Photo.

    Date:February 7, 2015

    Course/Instructor:Comm130 Section 13 / Julie Peterson

Program(s)/Tools:The tools I used for this assignment were my Canon T3 8mp digital camera, Vivitar series 1 flash, and Adobe Photoshop.

Objectives:Learn basic photography skills. Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it. Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on separate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing.). Size and crop the image, then set to an 8.511 page layout.

Process:I took several pictures (as displayed in my P3

Activity) and chose the one displayed below to use in my presentation. It was taken on my kitchen counter

using my camera and flash. I used Photoshop to adjust the brightness levels, vibrance,

saturation, color, sharpness, and add elements. I used my paper sketches to organize my project in Photoshop. I added green diagonal bars on both sides of the primary subject aligned with the sides of the candy box to give it repetition and rhythm. Additionally, I aligned the title with the top of the open box of candy, and the swatches with the box lid. I kept the flow moving from top right to bottom left. The title Tasters choice was placed in center proximity over the half eaten candy. The copy text (company name and location, etc.) was left aligned to the box lid, with a slight indention for aesthetics and to give added whitespace on the left hand side. The copy text is also bottom aligned with the swatches. The swatches are evenly spaced and aligned with each other (end to front) sloping to the right providing a bit of asymmetry with the box lid

  • Logos ProjectDescription: Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal image that will appeal to the audience. Years ago I had my own company, Paul Harris Data, LLC. I never really had a logo and wanted one. So this project afforded the opportunity to try and create one. My center logo is similar to one I had tried to draw years ago using PrintShop.

    Date:February 22, 2015

    Course/Instructor:Comm130 Section 13 / Julie Peterson

Program(s)/Tools:I used Adobe Illustrator CC to create all images and lettering.

Objectives:Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw three logos. (No photos or live-tracing.)

Process:Top Logo = I used a basic flowchart design (the flow is valid) with symbols found under the Rectangle tool. I used the Pen tool to do the flow lines. I took the Title and stretched the lettering tall and wide. I took the Body font and stretched it almost as wide the Title. Then I used the Big Split Complementary color scheme to add color to the logo. It was voted

number one by 14 viewers sampled.Middle Logo = I created an outline of my company name (PHD) using

the Impact font. Stretched it around an arch keeping the top of the lettering level. Outlined it

in light blue, filled it with a gradient dark blue. Added a drop shadow with the P to the right and down, H down, D to the left and down so the shadow pointed to the black italic Body lettering in the arch.

Bottom Logo = This logo underwent major color revisions based on critiques received during the draft phase. I create a computer key using the rectangle tool, 3d effects, and light indigo coloring. I kept track of the 3d effects values. I then designed a Laptop symbol using the Rectangle, Pen, and Reshape tools. Colored it light gold and applied the 3D effects. Created the PHD lettering, colored it even lighter Gold, added the same 3d effects I did on the laptop design, placed it in the computer screen, and then placed the grouped icon on the light indigo key. Grouped all elements and placed it next to my Company Name which was Indigo colored and right justified. To reduce tension between the lettering and the image I added 1 space after the s in Harris. This gave the lettering a slight angled effect.

  • Flier ProjectDescription: This is a black and white flier designed for Vouant Communication and the BYUI COMM130-13 class to advertise the Graduate Leadership Conference at the Lincoln Convention Center, October 21-23.

    Date:January 24, 2015

    Course/Instructor:Comm130 Section 13 / Julie Peterson

    Program(s)/Tools:I used Adobe InDesign.

Objectives:Apply the design principles and use appropriate typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve basic flier layout.

Process:The designer used Conference information and images provided by BYUI to sketch out multiple flier possibilities. After reviewing the image material available and the targeted audience, he determined that a graduation cap would be most effective for the flier. He was granted permission to include the additional image and incorporate it into the finished product. The flier was designed from his original sketches using Adobe InDesign. Four sections were placed in the flyer in a

prioritized layout, separated by bars to give the reader specific information quickly about

    the event.

  • Montage ProjectDescription: I created a spiritual poster montage using an image and verse from one of my favorite speakers. I generated a full-bleed, 8.5x11 design with two masked images and typography.

    Date:February 14, 2015

    Course/Instructor:Comm130 Section 13 / Julie Peterson

Program(s)/Tools:The tools used for this assignment was Adobe Photoshop.

Objectives:Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message. Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks. Demonstrate more advanced Photoshop skills.

Process:I chose for my background Arlington National Cemetery (56163744), for my foreground I chose Mesa Arizona Temple Christus statue (16001200) and Neal A. Maxwell (640360) video image speaking at Conference. After adjusting the levels, variance, and sharpening of the various images I started my Montage. I first created a background 16501275. Laid

the background image on top of the white background, resizing and moving it to the initial position.

I used the lasso tool to cut out a portion of the Christus image and placed it on my

background. Using the masking tool feathered the edges to make it look like Christ was coming into the cemetery from realms beyond in glory to collect those who had passed on. Next I placed the message on the background. This posed to be a formidable task as I could not get the headstones to reduce in contrast. I did not want to completely hide them as I felt they added aesthetics to the image. I didnt want to alter the text color too much as it would fall into obscurity. I added a graduated filled text box on the lower portion of the screen to allow my lettering to stand out, it worked somewhat but I ended up creating my own outline and embossing the lettering to make it stand out. So with the embossing, rectangle, and outline, I think the message is legible (but I still was not quite happy). Maxwells image was flipped horizontally (so he would look at the words), lasso cut and dropped on the background between the rectangle and the lettering. I masked his image and feathered the edges. I found a head stone was protruding into the base of Maxwells head so used the stamping tool (our instructor showed us) to remove the headstone leaving a nice grassy area for his bust to set.

  • Business CardDescription: In this assignment I was to design a business card using a new logo design from illustrator.

    Date:February 28, 2015

    Course/Instructor:Comm130 Section 13 / Julie Peterson

Program(s)/Tools:I used Adobe Illustrator CC and Adobe InDesign CC to create all images and Business Card.

Objectives:Use the basic tools in Illustrator & InDesign. Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image. Keep designs simple with light. Include contact information.

Process:Laptop Logo: I drew the logo laptop and key using adobe illustrator. For the key hole I used an oval, triangle and path finder to unite and then mounted on the logo laptop screen. I used a rounded rectangle, colored in gold and extruded to give the stem a 3d effect. I took three circles, hollowed out by the minus front feature, colored gold, united, and then extruded to give it a 3d effect and to make it look as though it was turned. I then grouped the stem and the top part of the key together

and placed it in the keyhole. Grouped all pieces together and that was my logo.

Company Title Place Holder: I wanted to put the logo on a placemat next to the company

name using strong contrasting colors. I chose a rounded rectangle in brick color and placed Slab Serif company text over the top.
