Event AdA tasteful ad for a fundraising event themed around “Pi Day”.

Jan. 31, 2016

Microsoft Word

Assuming some limitations you might experience in the professional world, design an event ad using only Microsoft Word.

I first located my image and then scanned it using an Epson V600 photo scanner. Once I made sure it was at a size and resolution I could work with, I added it into a word document, where I did all the designing. I then created some sketches to flesh out the eventual design. Once I had an idea of what I wanted I then began to create the design in Word. I downloaded a special font, Passion Tea, because I thought it went especially well with my design. I aligned all my text to the left to create repetition, mindful of my white space, and put boxes around the headers using Passion Tea in order to create an easily identifiable contrast to attract the viewers eye. I chose a monochromatic color scheme using orange because it is simple and fits the mood of a cafe.

Brochure

March 27, 2016

A tri-fold brochure designed around a summer camp for learning about movies. The back (top left), front (top right) and inside (bottom).

Adobe PhotoshopAdobe InDesignAdobe Illustrator

Create an informational brochure for a company. Design an original logo and make sure to include four different photos, at least one of them having been cut out from its background.

I started by sketching designs on paper. Once I had one I liked I went into InDesign to make a page layout. I decided a tri-fold would be best for the design I wanted. I then went online and found images to match my design. I designed a logo to go with the group hosting the event. I wanted to create a compelling look while also providing information to get the audience interested in the event. The images are supposed to show the audience what they will be able to do after the event. The body copy was all about the steps to filmmaking to serve as a teaser of what would be learned at the camp. I cut out the images using Photoshop and color corrected as well. Once I had all my images and body copy (and headers) on the page I started to rework my logo to what I have on the page now. I went through the arduous process of checking for alignment throughout printing.

Pre-production is everything that happens before you start filming a movie. This means that you must have completed the story, a working screenplay, and worked out all the logistics of filming. This is perhaps the most tedious part of filmmaking, but

also the most important! For example, if you don’t have a well-written screenplay it doesn’t matter

what else you do, the movie will be bad. Your screenplay must be as close to perfect

as possible. The important part about pre-production is that you move on

from it with a clear image of what your movie will look like.

You will hate post-production. Editing, coloring, rendering. It’s the final stretch of your film, and also the hardest part about it all. Do not lose heart at this time, you will have to remember your purpose and finish out strong. You will not end up with what you originally intended to create, this is almost certain. But that does not mean the clearly defined message you started with was worthless. Without it you would never had made it to the end.

Pre-Production Post-ProductionProduction is the fun part! This is where you get together your crew of filmmakers and start filming. It’s important to remember that things won’t go as you plan, no matter how good you are at planning. For this reason you must be flexible during this process.

LogosThree variations of a logo for a film production company.

Feb. 20, 2016

Adobe Illustrator

Create unique variations of an original logo for a company using Illustrator.

The design was completed using Adobe Illustrator. The first step was to create 3 different logos for the company of my choosing (iLikeit_! Productions). I then took the three designs to several different people for their opinions on which was the best. Once I had a definite winner I created 3 variations of it. I made sure to include one with a color scheme, one on greyscale, and one set to a colored background. I used a decorative font (PassionTea) and a sans serif font (Ostrich sans medium) in order to create a contrast that communicates creative professionalism.

Web PageA screenshot of a web page for a company.

March 12, 2016

TextWranglerAdobe IllustratorHTML/CSS

Combing HTML and CSS code, create a web page themed around an original logo.

The webpage was designed using the coding languages of HTML and CSS in TextWrangler. This was the first web sight I’ve ever designed. I started by using HTML to get the basic structure of my webpage. I separated body copy from headers and inserted my logo image. Once that was all ready (and validated through http://www.W3.org) I then linked my HTML to a CSS file, where I created the look of the webpage. I used google fonts for my text in order to ensure that the page would show up the same on any computer. When I was done and had already made corrections according to peer critiques I decided that my page needed something more, so I created the company mascot that can be seen to the right of the text. Getting him sized and aligned correctly was the most challenging part of this project. Once my CSS designing was complete I then validated the code again, just to be sure.

MontageAn inspiring montage of photos found online, brought together to create an inspiring poster to be shared online or put on a billboard. It’s to help people undestand the value of their talents.

Feb. 17, 2016

Adobe Photoshop

Using photos and typography, create a spiritual poster montage. Include a quote of some kind.

FIrst I determined the message. I then located the photos and appropriate quotes and edited them into Adobe Photoshop. Once I did that I masked clouds over skater image, added in cloud shadow and added text and applied a color burn effect to text. After all that I added glare onto the iPhone screen, added final text and then flattened the image.

Create a poster using Adobe Photoshop to demonstrate good photography and editing skills while incorporating a color scheme.

Feb. 6, 2016

PhotoshopCanon 60D

A colorful poster that encourages kids aged 5-10 to read.

Photodesign

I began by choosing a color scheme to use. Once I had chosen split complimentary of green, brick and violet I then went out to take a picture that would match this color scheme. I made sure to pay attention to lighting and composition. After photographing the subject of my design I edited the photo to make sure the hue of its colors matched the design color scheme. I then began to sketch ideas and created a rough mockup in photoshop. Peer review helped me perfect the design. I then printed it as a full bleed.

FlierAn 8.5x11in flier for a leadership conference.

Jan. 23, 2016

Adobe InDesign

Use appropriate typography to accent the provided photos. Use InDesign to create a flier.

I was given the image and logo to use on the flier. Once I had those I sketched four different designs to get my creativity flowing. I picked my favorite one and created a rough layout in Adobe InDesign. I split the design in half between the image and the body copy to create some symmetry. The title creates contrast and pushes the flow diagonally upward to the top of the body copy, into the upper right quadrant of the design. The upper right quadrant of the design works as a form of asymmetry. The flow then descends down the gradients of gray in order to lead the eye of the viewer to each new paragraph of information.

LetterheadA simple letterhead design that is personlized to a company but does not distract from any text that might be placed on the page.

Feb. 27, 2016

Adobe IllustratorAdobe InDesign

Create a letterhead design that fits the personality of the company. Also include an original logo.

I created the logo in Illustrator. Once I did that I exported it into InDesign and placed it on a blank page. I enlarged it to create a watermark for the length of the page, added in the company info at the top, and then added the logo again next to the info. I included the boxes in order to fram the design in a professional way.

Business CardThe front and back of a sleek business card for a company.

Feb. 27, 2016

Adobe IllustratorAdobe Photoshop

Create a business card design that matches the company’s personality. Also include an original logo.

First I created my logo in Adobe Illustrator. I created a letter using the text tool, transformed it to a shape, and then manipulated it using the anchor point tool. I added gold as well. After creating the logo I exported it into Adobe InDesign, where I had the business card design waiting. For the back I stripped down the logo by using a black background. Once all the information was added for the front of the card I was finished.
